Chicago property owners reeling from reassessments will be hit with a double whammy — a $300 million property tax increase — to help Mayor Brandon Johnson balance his $17.3 billion budget for 2025 without layoffs.
Johnson chose the property tax increase he campaigned against — and made it the city’s largest in a decade — instead of asking unionized city employees to give a little by accepting mandatory furlough days or targeted layoffs.
Wednesday afternoon, the mayor’s office released estimates of the impact of the tax increase on homeowners. It ranges from $72 a year for a home valued at $100,000 to $481 per year for a home valued at $500,000.
About fourteen aldercreatures have already said they'll vote against the budget if it doesn't include reinstating the ShotSpotter program. A few more said the elimination of 400 unfilled CPD vacancies is not acceptable, seeing as how crime isn't really down. And even more will have further demands to buy their votes.
Conehead swore up and down that a property tax hike wasn't in the cards, but it this proposal turns out to be the largest single property tax increase in history. His approval rating now stands at 14%.
Nothing about closing under utilized schools and perhaps selling the land to developers, especially amid declining enrollment as more families flee the city. CPS raised their share of property taxes another $324 million over two years - the maximum allowable by law. Funny how they never aim lower....they just max it out every single time and find something to spend the money on....like huge fully staffed buildings with sixty students.

I seem to recall talks of layoffs in the past. At that time I was told they have to layoff all civilians first. Wouldnt that mean they have to fill those spots that they hired civilians for with the cops they kicked out? That would double the loss of manpower on the street.

so property taxes are the only "take it to the bank" taxes. Nearly everything else can be avoided or minimized in some way. If you own the property with any real equity, you'll pay the bill or you lose the asset. Governments have known this since the beginning of time and commie governments like we have in Illinois just exploit it. The property taxes people in the western suburbs are paying make chicago taxes look like a bargain.

Got a mailer the other day from a school board candidate who is backed by the ctu. The fineprint at the bottom of the mailer indicated it was paid for by "community for cleo". An internet search directed me to kelo community family life center. Further research found that this organization is a city contractor/vendor/consultant and received payments of 9 million and 8.5 million for two seperate contracts in 2024. Is the city using tax dollars for poitical purposes? Asking for a friend.

I’m pretty sure there is no mechanism for a recall. The democrats would’ve never allowed that in the constitution when they rewrote it in the 70s. Just like they put weasel words around referendums so they cannot be anything substantial without the legislatures approval.

To the above nitwit about our pensions. From day 1 we paid 9% of our pay into the pension fund. Over the years the City missed payments they were supposed to. Hundreds of millions of dollars. This was on purpose to kick the can down the road. Every mayor did that. Eventually those payments need to be made. Our pension is funded about 21-24%. The worst in the country. Union, we don't have a union, we have a bargaining organization with certain abilities to defend the officers from the tyranny of the city of Chicago. I assume you pay into Social Security and pay 6 1/2 % of your salary and your employer pays the other 6 1/2 %. Total 13 %. If you take that formula, we pay 9 and the city pays 4% (but they don't pay). We worked for less money and 2nd and 3rd jobs because our pensions were a bit better than the private sector when I joined in the late 60's. No pension money on our overtime, unlike union members. Now, I paid in for 28 years and the city owes me what I was promised. By the way our S,S, payments are reduced by 60%, are yours?

No worries, just move to an area with a nearby airport and the money you save on taxes and ammunition can pay for airfare for your children and grandchildren to visit you in a safer environment. We did that over 20 years ago and never looked back. You don't need to leave your house armed. It's a different world out here. No extra charges for long distance phone calls or ZOOM etc. Good luck!

Move now. I sold my house in Chicago almost a year before I retired. I stayed out in the burbs and occasionally with friends and family commuting to work. The higher taxes are going to make it more difficult for new home buyers to afford your house...It took me a full year to sell..plan ahead.
