Every couple of years, something like this happens and every couple of years we remind everyone, "Search, Search and Search again."
- An 18-year-old man who was supposed to leave the Cook County jail on
Wednesday is not going home after all. That’s because Kemari Johnson is
now facing a fresh charge of possessing a loaded firearm inside the
jail.
Johnson was initially arrested on November 11 after he slammed a Chicago police officer to the floor during a domestic altercation, according to court records. The next day, a judge decided to release Johnson on electronic monitoring, but he stayed in jail for a week, seemingly unable to find a place to live while wearing an ankle monitor.
According to court records, Judge Lindsay Huge dropped the electronic monitoring requirement on Tuesday, allowing Johnson to leave jail on a nighttime curfew.
At about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, a probation officer was preparing to place an ankle monitor designed to track curfew compliance on Johnson’s leg when Johnson popped a question.
“Can I surrender something?” he asked, officials say.
"something" turned out to be a Taurus 140 semiauto, loaded with seven rounds and a with a spare magazine.
And if we're reading the article correctly, he had it:
- at the domestic incident 11 November;
- during arrest, transport and processing in the District;
- in the transport wagon to Cook County;
- at Cook County receiving;
- in the jail itself until 20 November
Are you fucking kidding us? No one found this anywhere? He should have been searched at least five times during his stay - arrest, before transport, during processing, before getting on the transport wagon the next day and at the "bridge." Those are just the instances we're familiar with. The sheriffs might do more in the jail before, during or after court.
Maybe there's something missing from the story, but for God's sake, SEARCH YOUR F#$%ING PRISONERS. And if you accept a prisoner from some other Officer, SEARCH YOUR F#$%ING PRISONER AGAIN.

Get off your high horse SCC! This is the 2024 CPD. This is not the 1994, shit even 2014 CPD. This current CPD version is scared and apprehensive. But it’s not our fault. We’re just looking out for old #1. Anything else distracts us from our screens and our social media. We don’t take too kindly to that.

He actually got the gun AFTER he was inside…story will break soon enough. Doesn’t exactly make it much better though….
This latest incident was laziness at every level, but primarily on the initial arresting officers.

This guy should not be charged. He actually acted pretty responsibly, how much money could he have gotten for that gun? Hell the CPD should sign him up and make him a commander.
Someone in the County brought the gun into the jail and mope was supposed to hand it off to someone outside. He didn't get that far with it on his own..
The CCSP has hired previously detainees with gang affiliations that were charged with murder as correctional officers.
Once upon a time I was in a unit along with 2 other specialized units. There was a woman’s washroom located just off of our unit and female prisoners were allowed to use it. Working nights we availed ourselves to the woman’s facility. One of the guys came walking out with a fully loaded Beretta 9mm that he found behind the toilet. Yikes! Hush, hush, and a found property report was made, found in a vacant lot next to our building.
He has more scruples than a few commanders.

The question is who are they going to put the gun on? Who’s going to take the hit. Now it’s going to be a political football unless 100% sure who dropped the ball. He with the least clout will take the suspension.
This much is true. No copper is going above and beyond anything on this job and that includes an intrusive search. This is how the left drew it up.
They should have full body scan equipment at the jail like the TSA has at O'Hare!!

Arrestees have been caught with concealed weapons while in
police custody for all of the 30+ years I've been in this business.
We didn't have the SAFE-T-ACT and all such nonsense then.
A lackadaisical approach to this job has sometimes gotten
officers hurt and killed. Handle your business, search, and
search again. And as another poster here already said, if
you find one, keep looking for another one.

That was my thought as well. Maybe he was pressured by another inmate to smuggle it out before he himself got caught with it
