The caller says she is being attacked.
The call taker hears the caller telling her attacker, "Put the knife down!"
This is all on the tapes and on the dispatch ticket. You go to the scene, you knock on the door. You're prepared for all Hell to break loose. The door opens, and.....

Gee, the described suspect with a knife, held in what can instantly become an overhead stabbing position or a sideways slashing movement, about what....six feet away?
But Officer - why didn't you go non-lethal, you racist bloodthirsty fiend?
Well....
Gee, looks like a baton - specifically an Asp - on the right margin of the frame. So the Officers were prepared for a non-lethal response....except the offender opened the door, with a knife, within striking distance, and refused to drop said weapon. There isn't a Law in existence that says you have to be stabbed before protecting your life, the life of your partner, or the life of the woman who is recorded saying she was being attacked with a knife. For all they knew, she was wounded or dead inside the apartment.

Body cameras can be good things a lot of the time.
UPDATE: Bunch of people saying "radio antenna" but two/three years ago where we were at, they had gotten rid of the Motorolas with the long antenna and we had the digital radio with compact mics. If that's an antenna and it's long enough to interfere with your gun arm, then there's a whole different safety issue someone at FOP ought to address.

Great still shots BUT!!! What does the video show? The only reason I say this now is because the department is so hell bent on de-escalation.. did he raise the knife and come toward them more than this? Did the officers attempt to move back and crest distance while trying to talk him down etc etc?? I don’t know any of this because I haven’t watched it but this BS department, COPA and civil attornies will attempt to harp on those issues. The offender very well could be in the middle of charging at the officers here. I’m glad the officers are ok and on its face based off this picture, justified.

I don't care if she's dead in the apartment, if she was lying, if it was all a setup, if she's out of town for a month, if he had zero intent to hurt anyone, if he was confused, if he was having a "mental health crisis," if the officers both went in there looking to kill him, etc. The fact is he's 100% a deadly threat and deadly force is 100% justified, no matter what any of the other circumstances are. That weapon, held that way, at that distance, and closing, is always 100% a deadly threat and deadly force is 100% justified. But we'll see a lawsuit, a payout, suspensions, attempts to fire and maybe indict the officers. It's all backwards and stacked against the police now. Great work by the officers and I'm glad the offender was shot.

All the radio antennas in my busy as hell west side district have crazy long antennas. Always have. Long enough to poke you in the eyes when you step in and out of the car, if you wear them on the molle. Some of us just swap them out at the beginning of the tour with personal shorter ones.
