FOP taking some credit for this:
The head of the agency that investigates allegations of significant wrongdoing by Chicago police officers, including cops involved in shootings, quit last week because the city’s police oversight commission was planning to recommend she be fired.
John Catanzara, the head of the union that represents the city’s front-line cops, made that stunning claim in a YouTube video on Friday.
“The reality is this,” Catanzara claimed. “The Community Commission [for Public Safety and Accountability], we know, took a vote to recommend her for a termination hearing at the City Council.”
“She knew her days were numbered, so she left before having to face that termination and absolutely was not going to have her contract renewed at the very least, or at least not approved,” the union boss continued.
There are also a couple of lawsuits against her and her "leadership" issues that seem to mostly be personality conflicts based on her not having any trace of one. We aren't sure how much the FOP had to do with the final decision, but the heat was enough to keep it at the forefront of people's minds.

While it’s great she’s gone, this is Chicago with a BJ for a mayor. The replacement will be no prize. The only hope can be they will be so inept that nothing actually gets done.

When the FOP “takes credit” for Kirstens departure, it’s based on historical facts that go back almost 2 years now.
For years now, 2nd VP Dan Gorman has been assembling examples and evidence of our issues with COPA. Most months you can read his article in the magazine and read several examples of bias discipline.
About 2 years ago we had meetings with a couple CCPSA members to explain our concerns and request they exercise their oversight powers. That actually led to commission members attending a membership meeting at my invite to hear firsthand from the membership. I was beyond proud of the countless members who went to the microphone to detail their issues. Regrettably, the commission were still temporary appointees. No further action was in sight anytime soon.
We then requested to IG to investigate but unfortunately they seemed to overwhelmed chasing white supremacy ghosts in CPD. Even though BIA had conducted not one but TWO investigations but could make a single case. Sadly this avenue was a waste of time and efforts but onward we marched.
I instructed Dan Gorman to compile a list of the most egregious and recent disciplinary arbitration awards where COPA was cited for various issues. There were concerns about not only length of investigations but honesty and excessive disciplinary recommendations among other issues. (Side note) Excessive disciplinary recommendations were the specific complaint on abouunfair labor complaints with the Illinois Labor Board. After the first complaint was filed, COPA actually doubled down and upped penalties even more. Gorman presented me with a list of 8 cases. We had internal discussions at the Lodge and the reps made the unanimous choice to present the option of a lawsuit to the Board of Directors for approval.
The Board of Directors voted unanimously to use our legal resources to file a suit on behalf of these officers. This really caused the dominoes to fall. Once the suit was filed, two senior investigators in COPA turned whistleblowers and went to the sleeping IG. They were then fired for that betrayal but no need feeling bad for either of them. They were part of the problem all along. The bright side of their termination was that the CCPSA finally decided to act. After the new commission members were approved by City Council, they voted to recommend that the IG get involved. They got a similar effort.
Lastly, the Reid shooting exposed her for every bias she ever tried to mask. The Superintendent certainly got the headlines for publicly calling her out but that ended up as only playing a small part in her departure. They both work for the mayor and there was no way he was going to insist on her firing. Eventually the CCPSA met a few weeks ago and voted to recommend a termination hearing under their statutory authority. She got word the end was here, and QUIT.
The handful of haters will say what they want but this was a methodical effort over a long period of time which was based in facts. To achieve this result we knew it could not be said the attacks were based on hatred or pure emotion. I am beyond proud of the immense efforts put into this endeavor. I am even more proud of the members who stepped up to put their name on the line, risking retaliation.

The article also mentioned how she was on a power trip about the officers in the Reed case per a whistleblower , the officers should sue her for defamation, and sue the city for utilizing a investigative agency with no authority at all .

Study a bit of labor history. Early unions gave workers protection against management abuse. Now, a lot of federal labor laws gives worker protection is there and has decreased the need for unions. Like anything in excess, unions have over-played their hand sometimes leading to the current backlash.

She abruptly resigned. JC was just as shocked as everyone else when the news dropped. He certainly wasn’t in the know. When the news dropped, JC was likely sitting at the end of the bar watching his bartender girlfriend mix drinks, with his Mercedes Benz that we bought parked outside.
