How Much?

You know they're going to go on strike shortly, right?

  • Think student success is just a matter of spending enough money? Well, Douglass Academy High School spent  $93,787 per student last school year – yet not a single 11th grade student at the school was proficient in reading or math.

Only 35 students were enrolled at Douglass last year in a building that can fit over 900 students. There are currently 27 full-time equivalent staff members, an increase of two staff members since the previous school year.

What sense does it make to keep a big high school open for basically a single classroom worth of students? Why squander so many resources on so few students?

Because the Chicago Teachers Union demands it. And Chicagoans can expect more of the same – high costs and abysmal student outcomes – if CTU gets its way in current contract negotiations

They're just about the single largest line item on the property tax bill, they constantly raise their portion the limit despite decades of failure, and they're going to do it again this spring.

Far past time to break the CTU.  Declare them "essential" and deny them the ability to strike. That'll put an end to 80% of more of their nonsense. Then start making funding contingent on actually producing positive results and see them start crying.

Who redacts the student graduation rate in the School Report Card? Douglas is also listed as a "commendable school," despite the fact that it's not in the top 10% of schools statewide.

Where’s DOGE when you need it?! In every demoRat run enclave taxpayer money can be saved to the tune of less taxes paid or maybe getting the value of service the money is spent on. Starting here of course with slashing the number of wards, aldercreatures, their staff, and ancillary budget appropriations for the affected wards.

I can remember the Chicago Public Schools being in chaos in the mid 1960s when I was in a Catholic grade school. CPSs will never improve.

Let's just imagine who benefits from this sort of waste. The teachers are just the lightening rods. Overpaid babysitters for hood rats; sure. The Admin works the System by using these schools as jobs programs, true. But again, even those hacks can't wait to jockey themselves to a better locale. However, there is a group that has been benefitting from union and concession contracts since Capone. Has anyone did a breakdown of the actual costs to maintain these monuments to waste, fraud and seniority? Even the most transparent school districts are known for overruns and waste. Imagining the shenanigans with that of Chicago boggles the mind. The Outfit is alive and well and living fat off the District, specifically in the maintenance and support side of the house. Those sorry ass teachumps aren't making squat compared to Union tradesman, and those old buildings are anything but efficient. Also remember that maintenance is a 12 month job, buildings don't take summer vacations. The most crooked Unions have been based in Chicago, or at least had a major presence. Nothing changes under the sun, or boiler room

We need to reimagine the teaching position. We need to demand that these teachers be held accountable for their students education. If the students are not proficient in math and reading the teacher should be put on a performance plan to evaluate what they’re doing wrong. Maybe we need a consent decree as well for them to monitor everything and see what needs to be fixed. Accountability and transparency!

Chicago has always been a city run by crooks. In a one party system you can get away with it. We're only now finding out the amount of control they had at the Fed level. Chicago needs a good doge, maybe that's what will get people to the polls....

CORRECTION: www.cps.edu currently lists Frederick A Douglass High School as having only 26 students along with 27 employees.

According to the CPS Position Files, Douglass High School is budgeted for 32 total positions, only 27 were filled since 12/31/24. These filled positions include principal to teacher to lunchroom worker.

10/27  of the positions are budgeted for their Principal, Assistant Principal, Teachers, & Couneslors that make $100K-$171K+

The interim principal is Michael Durr and he's been interim for going on 4 years and state law caps being an interim principal at 2 years. Durr is the top paid principal for CPS at $171K+ along with another $48K in benefits. Durr's total compensation for school with 27 employees for 26 students is $219K+

To check salaries of all CPS employees go to this link and click on the FIND box:

https://www.cps.edu/about/finance/employee-position-files/

Make you search former CTU President Jesse Sharkey. Sharkey is being paid $110K+ to work as a substitute teacher but paid and listed as a regular teacher. Sharkey is called a reassigned teacher aka CPS Golden Ticket winner as his teaching position at Senn high school was filled by another teacher after he went on-loan to the CTU from CPS.

Sharkey then can work as a substitute teacher while getting full regular teacher pay & benefits until he retires in 13.5 years. SWEET deal for sure. He's an anomaly as most teachers that go on-loan to the CTU will retire and use those $140K-$240K CTU salaries to boost their pensions. These on-loan teachers to the CTU use their last top 4/10 years to calculate their pensions and mostly use their highest CTU salaries.

CPS currently had anywhere from 65-100 Golden Ticket winning teachers working as substitute teachers while pulling in $110K+ along with medical/pension benefits.

Sharkey,  Durr, and all the Golden Ticket winners only pay 2% of their own 9% pension contributions per paycheck with CPS (taxpayers) picking up the other 7%. All other city workers pay the full 9% themselves.

Currently, both Mayor CTU & SDG are on-loan from CPS to the CTU and both have been for 14.5 years. Mayor CTU only has 4 years of actual CPS teaching experience with 3 yeaes at Jenner elementary school & one year at Westinghouse High School.

SDG has only 7 years CPS teaching experience at 3 different schools with her longest stint at Clemente High School for 4 years.

CTU should definitely be dismantled. Unions as a whole should be dismantled. There was a time unions served a purpose. Fighting for living wages, benefits, & working conditions, but that time is gone. Today unions protect lousy workers, prevent growth, & openly oppose ideas for improvement in order to prevent the firing of the incompetent. Collecting dues to enrich themselves and fund democrats who then fund anti middle class agendas like illegal immigration.

Private school is the only answer. Homeschool until middle school age. I knew a copper who separated from his wife on paper, and she moved out to the suburbs, and sent their kids to school somewhere else. There are always options. Just don't wait for the government to come up with any real solutions.

93k a year per student is beyond STUPID for the caliber of student that CPS is producing. Kids are graduating that cant read or write. I know that may alarm or trigger some people, but it is true...I worked in youth for a while. Kids can sign a piece of paper when I point to a line, but they cant read what is on it.

And let’s make the beat cops responsible for the amount of crime on their beats! You know guy up on the third floor smacks his wife, put the beat cop on a performance plan. There are members of the department whose partners are school teachers. Ask them about working with these students. You may think you aren’t backed by your department, well, think about how much backing a CPS teacher gets when trying to maintain some level of discipline in the classroom.

Several years ago had a prime example of a CPS boondoggle. School was having issues with it’s fire alarms being constantly pulled as well as alarms goin off in boiler room.

We went in and looked at the alarm panel. On the wall was a whatever brand Model 200. However the paper work and receipts were for Model 500. It’s like buying a Mercedes 550 and having the dealer deliver a 250. How do you not know the difference? At least on the engineers behalf he said he just transferred in to the school.

It was brought to the attention of the Law Department and others. It had been there so long they just couldn’t figure out who was responsible.

Another example is a school owned a fairly new $10k printer/copier. Principal
traded it in to lease two cheap printer/scanners for about $500 month. Really a shady deal but apparently within her disgression so not a thing done about it.

I'm all for it, used to teach in the south suburbs. Add BWCs for the teachers. But it needs a plan for the other 16 hours (or more) of the students' lives, ie their parent (if any) who don't set much of an example, their family who doesn't want to see them succeed because they will lose their 'entitlements' (and ghetto lottery ticket) and maybe even feel bad for fumbling their own chances, and peers who train them in gang values and will happily enlist them in gang life to validate their own sorry lives; instead of a real education. I'm not a sucker- and I'm not holding the bag for the ones who really let the student down.

I know it's common to bash Commiefornia, and deservedly so, but the level of corruption in Chiraq knows no bounds. A prominent joggerball high school in Inglewood, CA, Morningside High, is scheduled for closure. The current campus dates from the 50s, was white at one time and is now predominantly 'Diverse'. However, Cali real estate is good no matter where, and the Rams just build a multibillion dollar stadium for Super Blows which is shared with the Chargers. So we would think that with all that tax base boost that a school with 75% occupancy, and minimal maintenance needs (Think 70 degrees avg year round) would be able to Support De Community by remaining open. Not Freaking Even. City has much bigger fish to fry and Air and B;s for Rams' game are raking in wealthy turistas, so Laquan & Marita can GTFO. Contrast this with Douglas..... and extrapolates throughout the rest of the district. DOGE the school district and use the savings to bring back industry. Or leave the grift and crime.

And it seems almost every year when their contract expires and they ask for even greater sums of money, they threaten to strike. I say let them strike indefinitely and see if the students get any dumber. Chicago can get tough and hire scab teachers who are performance based. We should know if someone who can't read is graduating. The way the system is set up, if everyone remains quiet a student that can't read is just quietly passed along to the next grade level. Then they are given grade school and High School diplomas at some point as the charade continues.
