Told Ya So

This entire past three days has been more and more of this crap:

  • The head of a civilian oversight commission complained Thursday that proposed changes to the Chicago Police Department’s controversial traffic stop policy would still allow drivers to be pulled over for minor traffic offenses.

The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability said officers should be banned from making stops for certain violations, such as missing only a front license plate, a nonfunctioning headlight or loud music.

“In a city [where] I can get robbed and it takes them an hour to show up on the scene ... why would we have police officers pulling people over for a light bulb on the top of their license plate?” asked commission president Anthony Driver.

Um....because it's against the f#$%ing law you ignorant dumbass? And as we pointed out the other day, ninety-two percent of these types of traffic stops end with, "Fix it and have a nice day."

And guess what is revealed?

  • The police department is struggling to get by with nearly 2,000 fewer officers than it had just a few years ago, which also motivated the commission’s stance.

And the big wave of retirements is beginning in May. Well over SIX HUNDRED have declared their intent to retire this year, and that doesn't count additional mandatory retirements, spur-of-the-moment fed up cops, lateral transfers, separations or unfortunate deaths. And remember, bosses only have to give thirty day's notice.

One aldercreature gets it:

  • Ald. Anthony Napolitano (41st), a former police officer, argues that traffic stops can be effective in uncovering more serious crimes. He pushed back against the commission’s proposed limitations.

“As you make your stops based on laws and somebody breaking those laws, other crimes are usually discovered at that time,” Napolitano told the Sun-Times. “It’s called good policing. You’re maintaining and monitoring the neighborhoods you’re sent to.”

But he used to be one of us.

This is the way it's going though:

  • Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara said he attended two public sessions hosted by the commission but believes his feedback fell on “deaf ears.”

“I say give them the city they want. ... Eliminate all of these pretextual traffic stops altogether,” Catanzara said. “Don’t stop nobody. Let’s stop getting guns off the street. Let’s stop getting armed robbers and aggravated battery offenders off the street, because that’s what a lot of these traffic stops lead to. Let’s just stop it all. No problem.”

Sounds familiar.

THE ABOVE comment is probably one of the dumbest fucking comments in the history of the world.
Our Nation is truly doomed if we keep voting for the Left.

I don’t understand how some commission, group of Alderman or even the mayor can say stop enforcing a law. The proper way is to just change the law, amend the law, retract the law, eliminate the law. If having burnt out headlights, tail, or break lights is ok, say so in the law books.

Aren't all traffic stops "pretextual"?
If they weren't then there would be no need to ask for a DL .... or to run the driver's DL/name. If they weren't you would simply ask the driver to show you proof of their identity, write the ticket and be done with the stop.

They have no idea what they are doing if they restrict traffic stops. Do they think police will be more willing to do stops when it matters after this? Do they really think this will make their communities safer? This was the foreseeable problem with these community, civilian groups. They don't understand police work.

The job of a police officer is more critiqued than any other profession in the world. I’ve never heard a random guy say,” you know, that cardiologist should have started his surgery on the Bronchi instead of the Aorta. I’ve never heard of a commission set up to critique a plumber or electrician and tell the plumber or electrician how do his job. The bottom line I’m trying to point out is that none of theses idiots that are trying to change the rules are the police or have ever been the police , but they know what’s best for the city in terms of policing and public safety. The city should get rid of these clowns and leave the job of a police officer up to people that are actually police officers. Just a thought.

Are we doing traffic stops or aren't we? I would rather sit under a shade tree in a city park, eating a sandwich and working out a crossword puzzle than doing traffic stops and be branded as a racist or a fascist. Perhaps the department should come up with a traffic stop unit employing with the appropriate in-service training to avoid problems of alleged profiling.

I don't understand the sentiment of "give them the city they want." NO! Fight for the city you love. Don't give in to despair; don't be the victim. These are the times that try peoples' souls! As 10:17 wrote, write those tickets to everyone and explain why. Write op-eds; eventually some of them will be published. The union chief should make himself available to every news outlet he can to pass along the message (there have to be news reporters sympathetic to the police, reach out to them). Get politically active and get people to run against the dunderheads in the City Council.

If i was in the shoes of current officers ID BE PLAYING THE GAME they want! why chance your career on those that dont want you there DO as little as possible let the fucking city crumble. Take the calls you get and thats it, Drive to each and every call with due regard VS mach speed. FUCK EM. I have no sympathy for the voters or politicians anymore of that city. They constantly steal your money thru all their ways of taxing, tickets, parking, etc The voters voted them in and thats what they want LET THEM HAVE IT let them become victims of their own Bullshit until they learn they want to change things.

Voters of chicago and IL are like the chicago bears every year they make the same mistakes and every year history repeats itself with the same thing. HELL the smart officers ARE leaving for a better life and more friendly environment WHY ARENT YOU thats because some of you are also part of the voting BULLSHIT. Its simple you either work, be unhappy and complain about it while continuing your bad voting, Or you leave for a better life and dont say I CANT my kids or my wife or my family they will get over it pick up and go to greener pastures and a happier life. Stop depending on someone else to change it for you cause only you control your lifes choices. I have the solution. Buy every Police Officer a marked car, assign officers on firefighters schedules, 24 on 48 off. Put Murphy beds in police stations,I’m sure small businesses would allow a couple Murphy beds in there businesses. Patrol division officers will only respond to violent crimes. Other crimes can be reported vis computer, burglary, thefts, domestic violence
Maybe domestic violence send out a social worker. Have cameras installed ,drones to capture equipment violations,if not repaired within 30 days. Streets and San can tow the vehicles.

And what could possibly be the penalty for a Chicago police officer who took an oath to uphold the law when he tickets a person who violates state law and at the same time the officer is violating a department policy?
