$5 Million for Stupidity?
This is one of the reasons Chicago is bankrupt:
Chicago taxpayers should pay $5 million to a woman who lost both legs to frostbite after Chicago police officers ignored her pleas for help after getting locked out of her apartment in 2021, city lawyers recommended.
There was snow on the ground and the temperature hovered around 5 degrees in the early morning hours of Feb. 8, 2021, when Briana Keys, now 39, got locked out of her Back of the Yards apartment, according to her lawsuit.
Keys, who was not wearing winter clothes, called both 911 and 311 for help, but got no response, according to her lawsuit. A neighbor also called 911 when Keys asked for help, but by then she had started walking to the nearest police station, approximately a mile away.
As Keys walked, a police vehicle stopped and she asked officers for help, but received no assistance, according to her lawsuit.
First up, why didn't the neighbor offer her a place to sit until she could call and hire a locksmith? Isn't that what responsible people do?
Second, police aren't taxis. Were they on the way to a call? Were they transporting a prisoner? None of this is addressed.
There are a few dozen reasons for denying rides to people, primarily liability. Oh, and the General Orders specifically saying do not transport people who have no business in the back of a police car. If they aren't in cuffs, the City accepts responsibility for their well being. If they're injured, that's an ambulance job, and CFD is allowed to handle calls with a "Fire Refused" outcome.
She had access to a phone, access to at least one neighbor, and taxpayers are somehow responsible for her bad life decisions? And the DEI lawyers over at Corp Counsel are buying into this shit?

It's so much easier than having to actually go into a courtroom and face a scary judge (i.e. THEIR JOB). Besides, it's not their money they're giving away.

CFD goes out on those who are locked out of their place by accident or otherwise if the weather is inclement. CFD absolutely does so. If CFD couldn’t pop the door for whatever reason they would call for an ambulance under “COLD”and the Ambo would have taken her to a hospital. They do it all the time in the winter. Something doesn’t make sense here.
Anyone else find it both ironic and hilarious that someone named “Keys” was locked out of her crib?
She went outside with her phone but not her keys?
How and why did her door lock? If she knew her door could lock, why didn't she take her keys?
In temperatures that low, why didn't she wear proper clothing going outside?
She decided to walk in the cold without proper clothing a mile instead of wait with her neighbor? She had no other neighbors, family or friends to call?
Do we know for certain a squad stopped? BWC? GPS?
Do we have a toxicology on her?

Sounds like a medical issue. Does CPD have ambulances and paramedics? I can't recall seeing any.
Does the story ever mention if she was drunk and/or high? I'm 100% sure that's what happened, but I'm guessing that bit was left out.

It took her 3 hours to walk to the police station. No one from legal bothered to walk the route from her house to the 2nd District. I bet an average person of her age could walk there and back in less than 3 hours. #Gottalovestupid

I’m going to disagree on this one. Assuming the officers didn’t have some other pressing concerns they were wrong not to help someone if it’s that cold outside. If that was my wife, daughter, or mother, or any other member of my family I would full expect the police to help them get somewhere warm to get help. That being said I’m sure there is more to the story because if it happened as written COPA would have hung the officers. Her story is probably bullshit but the way SCC responded to this one on its face is wrong.

Many years ago we were at St. Barnyard hospital in 007 early on New Years Eve, about 0830. We stopped to use the facility before we went to the hole and on our way out we ran into an Englewood resident holding his throat saying he'd been shot. He moved his hand and a stream of blood trickled out from the hole. He motherfucked us for not being there when he was shot. After he declined any assistance, letting us know by mother fucking us a few more times he walked off stating he didn't like that hospital either. Can't say I blame him. We went to our car and went to find cover ...

Exactly right. The blog is wrong on this one. I’ve given rides to people during freezing temperatures, but the let’s be honest the officers couldn’t be bothered to do an act of kindness. Pay this woman and take your hit officers. You deserve this one.
