Imaginary Money

CPS, following the lead of government agencies everywhere, is proposing an expanded budget that doesn't match up with revenue streams:

  • Outgoing Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez and his team are moving forward with a precarious budget for next school year that is based on $600 million that is not lined up — a move that could result in thousands of teacher and support staff layoffs this summer or even mid-year.

The principals’ union and the mayor’s office blasted Martinez, saying that he is putting politics above the needs of students. Principals are expecting to get their school-level budgets on Thursday, but the Chicago Principals & Administrators Association called those budgets “false” and “magical.” School Board President Sean Harden also criticized Martinez last week for presenting the board with “unsatisfactory and incomplete” budget options. Harden called for Martinez, who has been terminated with an end date of June 19, to step aside immediately.

The school-level budgets assume a best-case scenario in which the city gives CPS $300 million in surplus from special taxing districts called TIFs, and either the state or the city come up with an additional $300 million. Both the city and state are cash-strapped and are not planning any big boost in revenue for CPS. Last year, the city gave CPS a record $298 million in TIF surplus funds, but it was based on the premise that the school district would cover a $175 million municipal pension payment. Martinez rebuked the mayor’s demand that CPS pay it.

The well is dry morons. Stop spending money that doesn't exist. Chicago is broke, Illinois is broke, taxpayers are tapped out and leaving in droves. Start cutting spending instead and closing underutilized facilities.

The RTA and other transit agencies are also claiming to be out of money and are proposing major cuts if they don't get more money.

When the teacher and administrators can’t do math, no wonder the students can’t.

Welcome to the Socialist States of America! I don't have children, yet I am forced to pay for everyone else's education. I get no child tax credit! I don't get to claim any child dependents on my income tax!

None of these idiots knows what it means to live within your means. Just spend more, give me more, and don't expect me to do anything let alone teach your kid to read or do math.
Elite democrat entitlement!

This should’ve been done long ago consolidations are needed, but of course the mayor who the teachers union gave the money tax dollars to buy the mayors office will not do the right thing because he’s just an idiot. And the mayor is definitely not for business in the city of Chicago drive by Bedford Park 73rd and Central look at the big facility that is over there called Chicago truck repair so many city trucks there from garbage trucks the streets and sanitation. I guess the city Chicago is not good enough to do business in the people here can pay the taxes which are huge. city their best to stay open, but yet the Citi business is going out of the city drive-by massive amounts of vehicles there What a hypocrite.

A decision was made years ago to place the CPD under a consent decree after a federal pattern and practice review. Following that line of thinking what would it take for the feds to come in here and conduct a review of the entire CPS.

As I recall, CPS added 6,000 employees with COVID money, the bulk of them not teachers in classrooms. So maybe they could look for economies there? Naw . . . .

Policemen and Firemen save lives and have to fight for a decent contract,Chicago Public Teachers do not, should be embarrassed to demand anything.. home schooling would do better, especially on those laptops that disappeared during covid. One can get a college degree online why not an 8th grade education??
