Crime Pays....Pays Very Well
The "outrage" expressed here is amusing:
Former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan’s lawyers accused prosecutors of a “gross breach of the rules” Monday, complaining that the feds “gratuitously plastered Madigan’s estimated net worth” in a public court filing leading up to his sentencing this week.
Late last week, they also accused prosecutors of seeking “to condemn an 83-year-old man to die behind bars for crimes that enriched him not one penny.”
"...not one penny."? Are you kidding us?
After fifty years in government, guess how much Mike is worth:
- Prosecutors wrote in a court filing late Friday that “Madigan has amassed a personal fortune of more than $40 million.” They did so as they complained of his “appalling” greed amid a scheme to trade on the office he once held....
- The base salary for Illinois State Representatives is established by state law. As of the most recent decisions, the annual base salary for a member of the Illinois House of Representatives is $69,464.
This salary can be augmented by per diem, committee assignments, travel reimbursement, health and retirement benefits, all for a job listed as "part time." Round it up to a cool $100,000 if you like, but even if that was the salary for all fifty years (it wasn't), that's only $5 million. Didn't Mike eat? Pay for a mortgage? Send kids to school, college and for law degree(s)? Weddings to pay for?
Mike was making bank as partner in his law firm, which was well knows as THE firm to appeal property tax assessments, whereby the firm would reap massive legal fees and the partners would get bonuses reflecting their ability to generate business. That's always been a legal way to ::ahem:: funnel money to those voting on the property tax rules. Funny how that works.
But claiming he didn't make "not one penny" is laughable in the extreme.
$50 million - who does this guy think he is, Nancy Pelosi?
UPDATE: John Kass has an amusing take on the people who used to "oppose" Madigan all of the sudden supporting him and his corrupt behavior - likely because they all got rich while Madigan took the political heat....which wasn't really heat at all. It was an act.

Politicians become rich at taxpayers expense.
"Show me a man who has enriched himself in politics and I will show you a crook."-Harry Truman
Even if you round it up to 100k he would still have to pay approx 1/3 of it to taxes
Dad always preached: compounded interest.
"$50 million - who does this guy think he is, Nancy Pelosi?"
Well, they do sort of resemble each other.
Both in late life transitioning?
Fast Eddie and crooked Mike can be cellies at club fed enjoy the stay asshole
Talk about organized crime. Jesus Christ !
This midget ran & promoted idiots for decades. When he won the speaker of the house in the late 90s (after losing it), he went nuts. So many incompetent idiots were promoted. Now look at what they have.
When Mike and his wife pass on, Lisa Madigan will inherit that stolen fortune too. I seem to recall that she authorized our current self imposed consent decree and disappeared from the public eye shortly thereafter to spend more time with family lol. She will be living large soon enough.
There must be something wrong with a person like Madigan who just can't let go of the power, retire, spend his millions. I guess Madigan just did not want to be the old retired guy in baggy pants walking around the neighborhood. Now, in his greed and lust for influence, he will be in a 8X8 concrete room eating institution food for the rest of his life.
watching channel 32 yesterday morning (the mute button is a must) but i regress, they interviews madigans wife. it seems mike is her caretaker yada yada yada. she is complaining, she will have to move, and the children theyre busy they work...... i came to the conclusion she is as big a lying fraud like her husband.
Politicians are stewards of the taxpayers money. It depends on what your definition of steward is.
The little leprechaun got to greedy and is about to kiss the 4 leaf clover.
That's some real cash.
Hope this arrogant, ignorant, greedy Prick, spends the rest of his days behind bars, along with the other bottom, feeding maggot Ed Burke ! That bitch of a wife of his Annie should be in a cell as well !
One has to wonder how many "Suspicious Activity Reports" were filed by banks when he repeatedly showed up with large sums of unexplainable cash. Sounds suspicious as an elected official raking in lots of money with no verification. One has to wonder if Madigan as a one percenter millionaire not yet billionaire "paid his fair share" as directed by supreme democrat lunch bucket Joe Biden.
Some people just.... can't..... let..... go........
He’s in church daily praying he gets the gift of 2 years that Mr Burke got.
Defense Attorney Dan Collins is worried about exposing his client's net worth. What is wrong with that Mr. Attorney Collins? As a public official, Mike Madigan voted on laws which infringe Illinois American citizen freedoms and "legally" levied and collected excessive taxes which affected the little guys net worth. Its a breath of fresh air to confirm and sunshine what Madigan, his cohorts and his legal staff are all about. Its the money. its all about the money.
As an attorney Mr. Collins, you know so many people have access to databases that identify physical assets, banking affiliations, stock portfolios, money transfers, copies of checks and electronic banking records, suspicious banking activity reports, etc. As an esteemed officer of the courts, lawyers routinely access credit bureaus, Lexis-Nexis databases and other intrusive data collection for profit companies ensuring maximum payouts in lawsuits utilizing those not publically recognized intrusive databases. What exactly is Mr. Madigan via his attorney objecting to? Madigan is a public official working on behalf of the people and corporate lobbyists. If you haven't done anything criminal or wrong, what exactly are you Counsel Collins and Mr. Madigan acting in collusion trying to keep out of the public eye.
That sounds like 99% of the older politicians. They can’t let go
Not going to happen
I’m an old copper. I saw all the dirty corrupt officers do it. I was shunned and pushed to the side. Police have been dirty especially in the pockets of politicians. Glad I retired because it’s so bad.
Kass is little sanctimonious. Never remember him writing much on Madigan, definitely not Burke.
