A Chicago police officer is dead and another is injured after a shooting on the city’s South Side Thursday night, according to the Chicago Police Department.
CPD Supt. Larry Snelling confirmed a 36-year-old female police officer was shot and killed near East 82nd Street and South Drexel Avenue. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.
At a press conference early Friday morning, Snelling said a female officer was a part of an investigatory stop around 9:50 p.m. Thursday in the Chatham neighborhood where a person fled on foot. CPD officers pursued the person into an apartment.
According to Snelling, when CPD officers entered the apartment, they were confronted by a second individual who was armed with a rifle and pointed it at the officers.
It appears all offenders are in custody at this point.
The Officer had about four years on and leaves behind a child. Prayers and deepest sympathies to her family, friends and everyone in 006.

I think there needs to be a serious discussion regarding transporting officers in a squad verses waiting for paramedics. CFD is pedal on the metal in these situations and they can treat on scene and during transport. CPD transport doesn't really make sense if you do a risk v benefit assessment.

Horrible situation and a great officer, the “real police”, lost her life. That being said this is a direct result of the lack of training and experience these tact officers have. A small percentage of officers actually want to be the police these days. Get them the training they need. Room entry, walk/run and shoot courses, effectively working as a team, etc. All the veteran tact officers, specifically in the 006th district left tact and went back to the watch, or elsewhere as a result of Tate being a complete moron and failing them! This created an environment of young cops teaching younger cops, and no one knows their asshole from their elbow. Things need to change in that district, training needs to be better, or this will happen again. If you want proactive Police, there needs to be specific training designed for them!!

I’m going with get them to the hospital as soon as possible in the squad. CFD paramedics aren’t always that close. Also if they do arrive I’ve seen them getting blocked in by arriving squad cars , especially the ones who exit the squad with the keys. Seen it happen more than once

We are a poorly trained police dept. The academy is a joke. Every Deputy and Commander of the academy for the last 15 years should be indicted. How many actual scenerios do our officers train in every year. Two or three. But the ghetto lottery is won by the savage. Merit promotions have destroyed every part of this department. Take any exempt and put them in the same situation that Rivera and her partner was in and they couldn’t perform. But as soon as they receive their gold star they become experts. No one wants to talk about it but almost every officer that been killed has less than 5 years. If that isn’t proof of a lack of training I don’t know what is. It took 2 officers being killed on traffic stops for the department to finally step in and say we might want to do something about this. Too much time is being spent in the academy teaching stuff that will keep the department from being sued and not enough to keep these new people alive.

I understand the need to get her to the hospital ASAP but during the transport did it/could it have caused additional damage?
There are people who get shot and an ambulance is called who arrives, stabilize the person then transport them to the hospital and more times then not they survive the shooting.
Maybe it’s not the best idea to take a badly injured officer in a squad car that has no life saving equipment on board, traveling over raggedy streets with the person bouncing around in the back seat. Not saying this is the case everytime but it’s something the think about.
