Still a Dumb Idea
A rumor from the Academy. Not the one about no new hiring until November - that one was confirmed as true.
Someone reported that all the recruits have been put into either a Friday/Saturday or Sunday/Monday day off group. The reasoning being that (as in years past) they can use the recruits as manpower for parades and special events without paying them overtime.
If we recall correctly, recruits are only granted Time Due, not cash and it's all hour-for-hour, no time-and-one half.
We also seem to remember that these kids aren't in full uniform and aren't carrying cuffs, batons, OC, Tasers or (of course) guns. They are essentially just unarmed traffic aides that someone might mistake for the police because they'll be wearing those yellow vests that say "Police" on them.
We always thought this was a dumb idea, and given the state of society and the target drawn on police by the political class, it would seem to be a really dumb idea nowadays.
And speaking of the "no new hiring" going on, who has the retirement numbers for the past month? Or for the year to date? Supposedly this will be the biggest retirement year for the past twenty years or more.

Send assman009 to the parades, he carries it all with him. When the leather gloves come out you know its serious.
July 2006. My academy class was sent downtown for the 03 July fireworks. My classmate and I, attired in khaki shirts and CPD ballcaps and carrying nothing but flashlights, were dropped off at Dearborn and Randolph and were tasked with stopping ALL vehicular traffic. That night was worse than Bud Billiken one month later.
The City is violating federal law by not paying them Overtime. There is no exception to not paying OT merely because you are a recruit in a police academy Can any officers from other police academies answer that question here for us? Did you get OT pay over 40 hours in a week?
The City has been telling this to recruits for decades and no recruit ever challenged because, as the City was known to do when thousands wanted this job, they would find another reason to fire whistleblowers.
But now that so few want this job, the power to demand OT is in the hands of the recruits. And what could the City do? Say no? Hire someone else tomorrow? Can the City or anyone cite the labor law that allows the City to not pay OT?
Regardless of what they're wearing or carrying, they won't be sworn officers, so they can't really do much but traffic control.
Bad rumor about this being the biggest retirement year. Numbers are about the same or even lower compared to the last 4-5 years. Would be surprised if it’s over 600 for the whole year.
Recruits are not being deployed. All of the instructors at the academy are in a Sun/Mon DOG so the recruits are now in the same DOG.
Ist first wave of unarmed police. That what the ghetto wants and in Chicago the ghetto gets what it wants. Just ask th clown in city hall.
Terrible idea. Always was. Why do they do it? Cus they can.
They want the officers working at the academy available for deployment. The recruits don't matter-
I'll bet some are carrying guns.
Maybe they can partner the recruits up with a taser certified Menards manager?
It is a band aid on a bullet wound.
It's the first rung of the ladder of being taught the city doesn't give a shit about you. The second rung is not getting a paycheck on time. And so on, and so on....
Lets get the lazy asses from all the front offices of each district to go out as well..Can NEVER understand how the city pays someone to go through the academy, get certified by the state to only work in the office, kissing ass and pushing paper. Hire civilians who could do that for a much cheaper pay and put the trained officers on the street!!! Most front office positions are NOT bid, just the Commanders lip servicers, except for review officers.
Recruits are not issued whistles? Remember when 43rd Alderman Michele Smith proposed Operation WhistleSTOP to stop carjackings, criminal sexual assaults, shootings, robberies and violent crimes. Blow your whistle really loud to deter and rise up against crime. The highly educated alderman reasoned that blowing a whistle loudly will alert others to call the police. This may be a very effective strategy for recruits to identify crimes in progress resulting in arrest and then prosecution in the Cook County Social Justice Collaborative. It beats standing there with your hands in your pocket. And you took police action so the COPA boogeymens are kept at bay.
They use them as traffic control. Good idea, then you don’t have to use officers
The point is that the public doesn’t know this and that is a dangerous thing
They better be talking with the Union when we were in the academy they made us work all our RDO’s. Well they can only pay you so much in time & the rest had to be paid by check., don’t let this city take advantage of you especially the dept if something seems fishy or dangerous confirm with the FOP.. we did and they had to pay us each like $2490 in OT check.. (blood money)..
Federal labor laws are strong. Illinois labor laws are even stronger. Spent half of a 50 year career working city the other half contractors. You get every penny from the contractors. Between the union, the state, feds ,and osha you get your due. The city on the other hand does whatever they fukking feel like doing. Total cult of personality and criminal clout. Advice to the new guys, don't make waves, if they fuck you out of an hour fuck them back triple. Since they are so incompetent it's easy to do. Always come out on top and fuck the gold braid assholes with a smile. Never give up,never surrender. It's actually a blessing when your bosses are dumber than the workers lol.
🤣
Just like all those people who were going to retire or hit the medical for the convention!
They'll figure it out when they see empty holsters
back in the 90's had similar assignment, cold & raining. our sgt demanded that we be out front & center for the duration so that the folks felt safe, an unmarked stopped & asked why we were standing in the rain, explained our orders, this guy said call for your sgt, we did, the unmarked sgt laid into our sgt & bought coffee for us as he explained " they hand out white shirts & stripes, not brains", he gave us his info & said call me anytime while your on probation, after that your on your own. never saw that guy again, never forgot him or the
lesson learned
I’ll bet the public would love to know how many police officers are assigned to the Bud Bill parade and not just the ones on paper.
lol- is a whistle even part of the uniform anymore? I had to have one in the 90s but never used it. I can’t recall ever seeing an officer use a whistle outside old footage of police directing traffic in the 1950s.
😂😂😂
The City is NOT violating law.
Probationary officers are “at will” employees and not fully covered by the union.
To 12:09:12, are you saying that recruits, as at-will employees, are exempt from FLSA?
