Imagine if Ed Burke said something like this in public:
When a Chicago Park District lifeguard was accused of shooting and killing a teenager at Douglass Park in late June, Ald. Monique Scott (24th) and her brother, former Ald. Michael Scott, weren’t surprised.
Both had served as Douglass Park supervisors and feared something like this would happen, they contend, because the park district has too few lifeguards, too little staff training and inadequate park security.
And, they say, part of the problem lies in assigning white and Latino lifeguards to pools in African American neighborhoods.
Seriously.
“There’s a certain way you have to deal with these kids,” Monique Scott said. “They’re going to give you a hard time. You need to have an authoritative presence without disrespect. You’ve got to know how to talk to these kids and not demean them.”
Scott said she got a call recently from a South Side park supervisor who reported that a Latino lifeguard had walked off the job after declaring that he “can’t work with these kinds of people.”
Seriously:

Gee, we've sarcastically suggested exactly this many times after the brain-dead politicians complain about the racial makeup of certain Districts, conveniently ignoring the fact that once an Officer gets some seniority under their belt, they bid the Hell out of crappy high-crime Districts for someplace the citizens appreciate the police presence.
And the "demean[ing]" behavior noticed by aldermoron Scott (both the current idiot and the previous) is a two way street. We could tell stories about Michael running back years in the 24th ward - the disrespect he dished out was nothing short of epic. Much of it comes down to parenting....or lack of, but Eric Holder and Sparklefarts told us we weren't ready for that discussion.
You know what we dream? We look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
And guess who's lacking in character content the past six-plus decades?

You can't make people with no work ethic get a job and go to work. They would rather complain about not having a job than actually doing one.
Years ago "we want doctors that look like us" or going to the forest, "want to see people that look like us" or "teachers who look like us" etc. I believe we have been getting softened up like this for decades! Also, carries into sports or news, on why some things are/were never hear. "Orange Man Bad" or Saint George Floyd. Look how your kids come back from college. You might not even know them, then look at their teachers.....

If they do not have the right amount of life guards, close the pool for the day. After three days of being closed, fill it in with stone and concrete and make it a basketball court. Saves money and the kids still have somewhere to "FUN AT". And then the city does not have a life guard issue.
If an alderman has a pool in their ward, they should be required to be a life guard. Simple as that.
Or just close all the pools that do not have the proper staffing. We do not have a pool in my ward, nor have we ever. If we wanted a pool, we would have one put in the back yard.
How many pools are in the backyards of South Shore, Englewood, the west side, and those surrounding areas? I really would like to know.
You take what you get. If you were to get more black kids applying, the Park District would hire them. If black kids aren't applying for the job there's probably a good reason. The two shot here are that reason.

Long time ago I worked at the old CC room at 11th and state as a dispatcher/call taker. I received more then one call requesting white police in communities of color.

If I remember correctly there was an old, now retired, Commander who said "If he had his way, Black officers would only patrol Black neighborhoods" first thing that came to my mind was gee that sounds like segregation, wasn't that deemed wrong and illegal? I retired out of a decent district that had it's slower beats and it's shittier, busy beats. Many times, black officers would complain about why they weren't assigned to the slower beats. They'd complain that this was racist, yet they didn't want to work the beats where the comunity looked like them

Who gets promoted by merit isn't secret at all. What they refuse to release are the qualifications required to be promoted by merit.

The are programs by the Tuskegee Airman to introduce black kids to flying, programs to introduce black kids to fire fighting, cooking, fashion design, tumbling, cosmetology and numerous sports. Does the Park District promote a program to train perspective life guards, maybe in the black community? Why don’t the public schools offer courses in becoming a life guard? They have the facilities and well paid staff.

I got out of the savage districts when I could. So far Ive clipped the pension for 10 years and running. Had I stayed in those shitholes I'd probably be dead right now, for one thing or another.

I remember way back when I worked in 7, the good citizens would always ask "where are all the black officers at? they asked enough times that the question had to be addressed , I asked them Do you really want to know where they are at? they replied yes. I proceeded to inform them that all the black officers were hanging out in retirement homes watching basketball games, and cared less that englewood was burning. They were informed that they should be thanking the White and Hispanic officers on scene because they actually gave a F*ck about the neighborhood.

Four years ago, my daughter and her cousins (all white gitls) applied for summer jobs as lifeguards. All were told they would not be hired unless they accepted jobs in Englewood or Grand Crossing. They declined

I remember when I worked in Englewood, responding to a domestic. Auntie shouts out "why I gotta deal with the white Po-leese, where are all da black Po-leese?!" There was a CPS school at 67th and Loomis. I think it was the Altgeld. The Principal was a black guy. All he wanted to hire was white women who had been former Catholic school teachers who now had kids in Catholic high schools or college.
He said they were responsible. They came to work everyday. They knew what they were doing and you never had to check on them. The only reason they were at CPS is because they needed the money for tuitions.
If you hired people “who looked like the community” you did nothing but make problems for yourself. Until the day he retired the school ran like a fine watch believe it or not. Within two years of a new Administration you can imagine what happened.

How about this then... If a ward wants to keep a pool open the lifeguard(s) and all the swimmers, need to be from that zip code. If you ID states 60637 that is the only place you can work and swim. If they cannot get life guards from their own area, CLOSE THE POOL!
And when you are on a plane and you fly into MDW, most of the pools are in the burbs. You are only over the city for a short amount of time, and not to mention you do not usually fly over Englewood, S.S., Woodlawn, etc. That is where I was asking how many pools there were there. :)

12:17- I don’t think the “power” thing is in their definition. We have black Lt. Gov, Reps, CC President, Mayor, had SA, CPS Pres, Alderpeople, Judges, etc etc - their whole belief system hinges on systemic racism even when the whole system is probably disproportionately over represented by POC in this state.
