Welcome Home Ed!

We guess Madigan will have to hunt up a different bunkmate:

  • Former Chicago Ald. Edward M. Burke has left the northwestern Illinois prison where he’s been held since September for his historic racketeering, bribery and attempted extortion conviction, officials have confirmed.

Burke transferred Tuesday from a low-security prison facility in Thomson to community confinement, according to a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson. That means Burke will either continue to serve his sentence in home confinement or a halfway house. His official Bureau of Prisons release date remains Feb. 20, the spokesperson said.

Burke’s two-year prison sentence raised eyebrows when it was handed down in June 2024 by U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall, now the city’s chief federal judge. And in the end, it appears the punishment for Burke’s abuse of office is a total of nine months behind bars.

So Ed will have time to spend his ill-gotten gains as he shuffles off this mortal coil. Nine months behind bars and a few extra months getting home cooked meals and see friends and family.

Mike is looking at triple what Ed got, so he's desperately looking to stay out of prison while he runs through his appeals.

If that was one of us we would be up the river for ten years or more. His light sentence only emboldens the next generation of thieves in this city. They stash away millions to enjoy after they return from the country club prison where they were sent for a time out...Meanwhile Chicago goes broke and get more violent every day. Ed Burke will see judgeement in the next life if not in this one.
And remember...there are supervisors still on this job who gave that man an envelope full of cash to get a promotion. Souless minions of a wannabe crime boss.

Judge Kendall, appointed by GW Bush, fell for the bullshit from Burke's attorney about Honest Ed being a "Priest without a collar" etc etc.

Judge Blakey, son of the creator of the RICO statute, was appointed by Obama and nailed Mike Madigan.

Blakey made the better judgement.

Still I'd think that Madigan can spend his money hiring a PR firm to lobby for an early release or commutation. Spread some of that forty million around.

I'd think he might spend two years behind a fence before he's released. They both deserved to die in custody.

My dad and two uncles were one of them. My entire family greased the wheels of Chicago politics and did very well.

It's not just Ed Burke. It is the entire system.

Political corruption is not just confined to Chicago. In every city and state there is corruption. Back in the day you gave an envelope full of cash. Today you give "monetary campaign donations".

Are you a greenhorn or something? After Daley stole the election from Nixon in 1960 the first thing Nixon did when winning in 1968 was to send in the US Attorney with orders to get Daley. Regrettably, Thompson only pinched low hanging fruit like coppers and alderman. Maybe this time will be different.

In the *original version of the book, "When Corruption Was King" by Cooley, at the end he went into exacting detail how/why BOTH Eddie and his wife ISCJ Ann Burke should be in jail for a caper/cover-up that he explains never was mentioned or prosecuted.
Like Cooley or not, just saying, the details were very explicit but apparently never made the light of day.
* The book was again re-released in later years in the same title, changing some of the original overall text, and while it included the mention of the Burke's, that part was soft-peddled, not to the extent in the original version.
I read both versions.
The original version is still around at the library I presume, and it makes for some interesting reading on the 'Chicago Way,' where one can read then judge for themselves.
I think former 'forty-turd alderman' Paddy Bauler typified it best when he opined, "Chicago ain't ready for reform." (Bauler died in 1977.)

Speaking of home, does anyone know what happens if I get caught living in a suburb (Part 3)? Do people automatically get fired? Do the people at the FOP step up to the plate and do their jobs? Thanks to everyone who has given solid advice in the past. I am considering to buy a city sticker so that I will not be an easy target. My kids are in world-class schools and they are making solid connections that will open doors for them. I tell my neighbors that I work in marketing and they are coming to me with job opportunities. I am trying to weight the pros, cons, and the risks of living in a suburb.

My brother in law, was a real drunkard and embarrassing in all situations. Old Eddie made him a Lt, then a Captain on the CFD. He was always afraid that Ed would find out he walked out on my sister and the three kids. Was upset he didn’t make Battalion Chief, but Old Ed told him you have to know what you’re doing, as a Chief. Worked all his golf outings in Wisconsin, drove the Kings children to colleges, when the King and Queen were not available. Old Ed, told him no working the precinct passing out palm cards with the smell of alcohol on his breath. Old Eddie took care of his own.
