Disciplinary hearings in the most egregious cases of police misconduct could be pushed behind closed doors if an appellate court sides with Chicago’s largest police union this week.
Most officers accused in these cases are already opting to skip the Chicago Police Board, which holds public hearings, and instead go to arbitration, a process that has historically been favorable to the police. As it stands, officers accused of lesser misconduct already can make their case out of public view.
The appellate court ruling is expected Friday, but could be quickly appealed to the state Supreme Court.
The yearslong battle over police discipline previously stretched from the union bargaining table to the City Council floor and the courtroom of Cook County Judge Michael Mullen, who ruled in March that officers could elect to have their cases heard by an arbitrator instead of the Chicago Police Board.
Mullen also ruled that the arbitration cases shouldn’t be held in private, prompting the appeal from Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police.
We're all for transparency in government, and like it or not, the police are part of the government. Probably the lowest and most visible part of government, but nevertheless, government. And we'll throw out our usual caveat that Police aren't above the law, but we certainly shouldn't be under it either.
If something rises to the level of criminal conduct or criminal charges, by all means, hold the trial in open court, have it covered by media the same as any other case. That's what an investigation and States Attorney's office are for.
But for piddling BS that is only going to be used as a cudgel to beat the entire Department, or is determined to be procedural / administrative in nature? There's absolutely no reason for any of that to be public if it isn't criminal in nature or perhaps discoverable in a Federal lawsuit where public tax money is in play.
And yeah, there's a gray area that needs to be negotiated and defined properly. As the Illinois Supremes are all bought and paid for, this likely turns out the way we all assume it will - badly for the police.

In Chicago, everything turns out badly for the police.
These are 30/pending separation cases. YES they need to be public. The issue is COPA should only be going for separation cases after a person goes through the criminal trial and is found guilty.
Transparency……..something something…..eroded public trust……something..something……..accountability…..the court decides arbitration cases should be public and televised

shouldn't such meetings be considered part of this exception to the open meeting act in Illinois:
"discipline or removal of an occupant of a public office or appointment of an
individual to fill a vacant public office, but only when the public body has
the authority under law to appoint or remove an occupant from public
office"

OT. Some one from work made me aware of your blog and I read a comment about a teacher at Richard Edwards harassing little girls. Well, I'm also a teacher there and I can confirm what my colleague wrote. I'm a big police supporter but all teachers are not the same but then again I've been teaching for 20+ years. Someone wrote a comment about us being a mandated reporters and yes that is true but that's only on actual crimes and not a hunch. I do believe that teacher is a pedo but can't prove it, he even has a youtube channel and interacts with several of his students after school hours which is a CPS violation. Ever since the deficient principal took over our school, it has gone to shit. Even the vice principal is a joke, she was caught driving drunk sometime in May. I hate the fact that the children I try to educate end up in your cuffs. As an educators who cares, I've become to believe, better yet, I know the system is designed for failure. Officers who read this I want to thank you for what you do, my job is 10 times less dangerous than mine. Go home to your families safely!

The differences between the profession of law enforcement and all other occupations is that the former is subjected to a standard constantly being mutated and all others are not, those employed as such are literally under the monitoring of such minuteness that big brother would envy, and that perfection is impossible given the mutational nature of said standards.
If you want to argue the public should be able to see it, sure, make whatever accommodations are necessary so that there’s reasonable transparency for the arbitration process, but they shouldn’t be forced to go to politically corrupt police board.

Can anyone show me the Arbitration Hearings that are or were open to the public for Teachers, Firefighters, and Park District Employees??????? Until then STFU!!!!!!!!!!! The officers facing separation overwhelmingly have not been charged criminally. The hearings should be private so that outside forces cannot have influence over them. That's called fairness for all those who don't have any common sense.
Rialmo got sandbagged by the corrupt police board who mirrored whatever COPA or IPRA or OPS recommended. I lost track of the acronym police headhunters. He definitely would have done better thru arbitration.
