Off topic but just so people know, Hein has taken a red pen to all the To/Froms for next weekend and denied everyone asking to keep their RDOs. In a lot of cases he has approved time due requests where people are out of town with flights and hotels but then denied their RDOs. So basically have fun in Mexico but get new flights and eat the cost of the hotel cancellation so you can be back in time to work your RDOs.

That used to be the great thing about police work and rotating days off - you knew AN ENTIRE YEAR IN ADVANCE what your days off were and could work with your family to schedule big events, like weddings!
So when the Department tells you that they care about you, your family, your mental well being - especially if you're doing a destination-type once-in-a-lifetime event - THEY'RE LYING!
Meanwhile, people are saying Hein is going to be overseas for the entire duration of days off that everyone else has to show up for?

hate to tell you but people these days abuse the lies. You know how many people book the fully refundable and free cancellation hotel rooms and rental cars on Orbitz or other sites? Then print it, write the request and then cancel it. You know that when you book something and print it that the confirmation number is on the paper. All you have to do is put the confirmation number in and the name on the travel document you submitted and it shows when it was booked. guess how many were booked on the day the to from was written and then how many more showed cancelled when putting the confirmation number in? Most were which means many got caught in lies. That trick is about two years old. BOP caught onto that last year. A girl on our watch had the to from sent back to her denied along with the page showing the reservation for both her hotel and airfare was cancelled on the day the to from was submitted. ALOT of red pen and highlighters were used for that one. patrol actually checked and sent her the print up of it. Same thing with southwest. If you book a flight with points and cancel, the points go right back into the bank but you can check the confirmation number on their site as long as you have the number and last name.
Here’s the thing, Everyone on SCC hates Tally, but she’s never denied a request to maintain RDO's or use elective time in her time as 1st.
The department cancels puerto rican fest, pride, and mexican independence department wide annually for people in patrol. Otherwise I'm good for the rest of the year. If you need those days off select that furlough segment during furlough picks. Don't scam with refundable southwest Airlines tickets saying your going somewhere. Too many scammers on this job now. Let’s start with them approving the day (RDO) of an actual wedding but requiring you to work the day before and the day after on 12+ hour days that are more likely 15+ hour days like pride and still not knowing what your hours will be while denying requests. How do people arrange childcare etc without knowing hours until two days before with shifts like that?!
Let’s also enter in the fact that po’s are calling the union and talking to someone who ‘knows hein…I’m sorry ‘Jon P. Hein’, dare you forget his middle initial on a to from for the automatic denial. I’ve been told they’re getting denials reversed. So, the question becomes…who’s stamping these and is he reading them or is it some desk doll on a power trip (who’s up for her/his 1st or next merit promotion)?!
Last I checked, the union represents po’s as a department, not the ones who call because they have a little bit of time on the job. I guess with all the rumors over at FOP, favoritism is playing out. They seem to take care of the few that complain when they should actually be making contractual agreements to represent the whole.
Unions are useless at this point. We’re five years and counting with this bullshit. Every gold star is looking for the next promotion. They will tell you til they’re blue in the face they care about you and your family until they have to stick their neck out to do the right thing (like pass a test for example).
Add in this…EAP showed up to roll calls the day all these requests were denied but the email for denials came in after EAP gave their ‘we care about you speech’. Impeccable timing on the departments behalf.
I’ll end with this ‘if you work in XXX, you definitely need a counselor’! They know they’re not qualified to handle what working coppers need. This department could give a shit about any person working for them. They are about the money…the money that comes from the consent decree, the 50 elearning’s, and classes that have you watch the merit bosses talk so highly of themselves.
The bosses in the districts (Lt’s and below) care about the people they supervise. They know them on a personal level. The low level bosses, know the gold stars (commanders included), could care less! They try to support coppers but do it by telling the Sgt’s and Lt’s to ‘take care of their people’ so when shit hits the fan they aren’t held accountable (and most sgt’s and Lt’s embrace the fact they can help their people).
Until we all stick together, nothing will change. It’s sad that when people with some time on the job run into each other nowadays and the first thing out of their mouths is ‘how long you doing? How long you got left? This place is awful!’ We signed up to help people, not to live like we earned a prison sentence. We singed up to help people, only to be left behind…if this department wants to put a dent in suicide rates they should start looking at their leadership and those they deem qualified to lead. That would be a start!

RDO's get cancelled, but thats OT. Nature of the buisness we are in...Going on vacation? May I suggest vacation insurance? It is worth it if you cant go on a planned vacation, they cover your cancellation expenses, and any losses you may incur.

You need to get your contract language changed so that any approved time off attached to a RDO makes the RDO the same as the time off day. This way they cant make you work on your rdo but still have the day off on the vacation/ personal , or holiday time day. Troopers contract and several suburban departments have this.

This time off problem is the result of what is becoming a critical shortage of manpower. The Department can't give RDOs or elective time off because the needs the boots on the streets but the well is running dry. The new hire pipeline is only a trickle. The threat of a disciplinary action is hollow because they need the bodies which they don't have. Nor are likely to get anytime soon. The job right now has very little to attract people to it. Dangerous, unappreciated, stressful, high cost of living and residency.

Who gives a fuck you office idiot! The point is, the person wanted their day off in which they are entitled to and the department and city has abused their authority by constantly canceling days off for non-emergency reasons.
What is sad, is officers have to result to lying and come up with clever ways to lie just to maintain their days off! Officers, keep in mind this is a rule 14 violation (lying whether written or spoken in your official capacity), this is a fireable offense.
The only reason these days off are cancelled is because we are extremely short staffed and the department can’t find enough qualified people to take this job, nobody wants it anymore.
The city and politicians have created this problem with their war on law enforcement, defund the police and actively pursuing criminal charges for officers mistakes that would have resulted in suspensions in the past.
Ultimately I hold the departments responsible for failing their officers. Almost all large departments only care about is officers hitting the streets and answering their calls and quailing crime any way possible whether legally or not.
Think about it, I went to the academy in 1997 and didn’t receive any training on case law from the department until 2023 since I was in the academy. And, this training was only because of the consent decree.
Now, during my time, I took it upon myself to stay up to date on case law and went to outside training on my own because I knew what the department was lacking.
I always wanted to be a police officer, so I took pride in what I did; I hated losing cases because of my ignorance and always sought out training to get better. I didn’t want to lose cases and I didn’t want to get sued, or killed. But now, I do it because I don’t want to go to prison.
So heed my advice, don’t only rely on the department for training, whether it be tactical or legal and procedures. Seek out this training on your own. When you go to this outside training you can’t just implement what they taught you, you have to see how what you were taught can be implemented into our departments rules and policies.
I didn’t say the departments lack of training is right or that you have to do seek out training on your own and pay for it yourself or that it’s fair but it’s been my experience that the department will always do the absolute minimum if they do anything at all when it comes to training or making sure we have the proper equipment or personnel. As my time here is limited so stay safe and stay educated and don’t rely on someone else…

Veteran cop here. Cancelled RDOs suck. But they've been part of this job since day one. What gets me is watching grown adults completely lose their shit every single time it happens.

My how this job has changed and not for the better in most respects; Yes, better pay and equipment, but that seems to be about all. Patronage seems to have completely overtaken the leadership ranks. The job used to be that you showed up for roll call and then tackled the crime problems for the day. Occasionally there would be a demonstration or crime pattern that the tact teams handled. It was rare to cancel days off . Now ? It seems losing days off and getting involved in riots and demonstrations is become routine along with every thug fighting the police. Then you have the draconian rules and policies that tell you to not do anything or risk your job or freedom and draconian suspensions. I loved the job for 34 years but I just don't think I would do it again under these circumstances.
