People are noticing that a significant amount of their property taxes are going to the failing school system. The trouble is, that's how it has always been. The biggest user of taxpayer money has always been the schools and always at oversized percentages. In fact, we're pretty sure that the schools have ALWAYS raised their portion of the property tax to the absolute MAXIMUM allowed by law for at least the past twenty years, perhaps thirty.
And now, after all that time, the media is actually reporting on how the schools waste it:
Overnight travel expenses within Chicago Public Schools have skyrocketed in recent years, an internal watchdog investigation found, as employees of the cash-strapped school district spent millions on overseas trips, spa getaways and flights to Las Vegas and Hawaii.
CPS Inspector General Philip Wagenknecht’s office on Wednesday published a new report on the district’s travel and overnight spending, which jumped from around $300,000 in fiscal year 2021 to nearly $8 million in 2024.
According to his report, some employees allegedly took advantage of the district’s “lax, vague, inadequate and unenforced” travel rules and procedures, leading to the “exorbitant” post-pandemic travel spending using taxpayer funds.
They spend this money to go to conferences to learn how to be better teachers and administrators, while test results continue to plummet and less than a quarter of CPS students can read or math at grade level. At last count there were something like a dozen schools where not a single student could achieve anything near a national standard.
But travel to conferences went up by TWO-THOUSAND SIXTY SIX percent in three years.
Funnily enough, when conferences were held in Chicago, attendance was in the low double digits, but when a conference was held in Vegas or Hawaii or Europe, attendance skyrocketed into the hundreds.
How much did everyone's taxes go up again? And why are Chicago voters electing progressive communist coneheaded teachers' union tools into office?

Whoever will run against Conehead has just been handed a gift. And if Conehead follows through with layoffs and fee increases, since his head tax failed Conehead’s opponents will be gifted more ammo against him.

Zoom classes cause you can't be in class with students but you can be surrounded by other teachers and trainers at a conference... that couldn't also be attended by zoom. F off

same issue in the suburbs, but mine didn't go up beyond the usual 3-4% increase. The schools here get 75% of our total property tax bill and they are all a bunch of marxists. We have a significant group of teachers in the $120-150K/year bundle and then they get end of career bumps that juice the pensions. No one anywhere gets pensions that rich, including most other public employees. They are looting the taxpayers, but if you try to say anything you get the usual hate-speech and threats of violence.
If people want to understand why our kids are so f'd-up, look at the teachers that brainwash them for 20 years and the parents that don't seem to care.

Wait for rents to go up in these neighborhoods. Except people won’t pay them so owners will disinvest in the properties. People will find it harder to maintain properties. And you will see even more neighborhoods full of vacant buildings.

You should check out the whole report. Hundreds went to Vegas. When the same conference was held in Chicago....only a few attended. They even went out of town when the trip was denied. Federal consent decree is the best thing for CPS. With everyone having a cell phone, very few can tell you what time it is while looking a clock. Maybe the teachers should be given a basic test. I bet most wont pass.
If teachers are so valuable to the children and the community as they often say then they shouldn’t be able to go on strike just like the police and fire.

Some schools in Texas are using AI as teachers and the students are learning an awful lot with the teachers here many of them don’t even live in the city using their tax money out in the suburbs that cannot even be enforced. Also-teachers I know are reporting that their classrooms are half-empty due to the presence of ICE. So how many students/parents in CPS are undocumented? Another consequence of being a sanctuary city that no one voted for. We can't afford this. I send money to fund schools in the Congo and Rwanda-we can't have every poor child in the world come to Chicago for education.

In 1996 at Orr H.S. the valedictorian could not pass the ACT test minimum of 17. This poor performance has been going on for decades thru the Chicago school system. I sent my kids to a private school. I paid big bucks for that, but it was worth it. All three have master's degrees and high paying jobs. Thanks for nothing CPS.
