Plowing Problems

Someone mentioned this in the comments:

  • How are the speed bumps, bike lanes, curb bump-outs and those plastic lane markers affecting plowing operations?

And how many hundreds of thousands of dollars are going to be spent on....:

  • concrete repair
  • new plastic lane markers
  • straightening out plow blades

....after everything that was already spent on f#$%ing up traffic?

We warned years ago that the bike lanes were only usable seven months a year and eliminated how much street parking? Dealing another blow to businesses who relied on customers being able to....you know....actually park near their storefronts.

And now the Uber Eats/Door Dash drivers clog the remaining lane.

The bike lanes are really wasteful. I am out at different times of the day on streets like Milwaukee, Elston, Grand et al. And even in the warm months you don’t see that many using them. The City caters to that voting block of bicyclists. What I do see is a lot of knocked down barriers and broken concrete. And it has slowed down some streets that were 2 lanes. Operating a plow has to be a nightmare.
Below is an AI clip describing costs, just took one paragraph as it really gets into detail:

“ ...
The cost to construct bike lanes in Chicago per mile varies widely depending on the type, from around $170,000 for a basic painted lane to potentially over $1 million for a protected lane with physical barriers. Other factors like the specific street, existing infrastructure, and project scope contribute to the final cost, so there is no single price. “

Plowing fallen snow off the main avenues from curb to curb, unimpeded by any parked vehicles, was the entire purpose as proposed by city at the time.

Some time after, the side street speed bumps were touted as for the safety of the children. Thus, other than private contracts using much narrower plow blades to push snow from outer edge of those speed bumps all the way onto the curbside frontage between curb and sidewalks, no plowing of sidestreets has ever been practical. Other then for plowing in any vehicles parked upon same.

So, even before those idiotic bike lanes bordered by concrete curbage were installed, upon those major and minor avenues, nothing about these schemes is effectively beneficial other than for revenue.

Fancy that.

Most bike lanes are perpetually empty. South and West Side bike lanes like the ones on Vincennes Ave and around Garfield Park are virtually deserted year round. Even the lanes on Jackson in the West Loop during the summer months rarely have more than a handful of cyclists throughout the day. Elston Ave, once a convenient alternative to sitting on the Kennedy, has become a massive one lane caravan of bumper to bumper drivers moving at a snail's pace. Rush hour drivers sit in traffic and stare at the vacant bike lanes that once made a painful commute a little more tolerable in one of the worst traffic cities in the country. Rahm topped Daley's city hall rooftop garden by adding unused bike lanes to nowhere citywide, wasting millions of taxpayer $ to pander to the rotten libs that gentrified once normal Northside neighborhoods. Democrats!

It’s about advancing the one worlders agenda, make it impossible to get around in cities by car and force people to use bicycles like Chy-nah. Everyone will be living in 15 minute cities, no need to travel, everything will be accessible by bike or walking. They can’t have the rabble traversing the country freely in their automobiles, we vill not own anything, and we vill eat ze bugs und be happy. What the heck’s going on, I’m starting to sound like a Nah-zee.

Bike lanes came in at Reason Number #7 when I decided to leave Shitcago when I retired. They destroyed thoroughfares and made traffic impossible. Fortunately all remaining family in Illinois now lives in distant burbs and I don’t have to deal with them at all when I return to visit.

The bike lanes, the plastic marker and don't forget the concrete median pots in the middle of the big streets that was a part of the "beautification project" was not designed to beautify. It was designed to further reduce traffic lanes and congestion traffic in order to push more people to use public transportation and or bikes. Now Chiraq got a contract with some connected people to rent out the Divvy bikes and the electric scooter program as well.
It's by design. Nothing is accidental. Just like the SAFE-T Act. It wasn't designed to protect Illinoians. It was designed to keep criminals out of jail and bankrupt small businesses. Same when a CCW shoots and armed assailant, Chiraq will blame the law abiding person who wasn't committing crime but, simply CCW to defend themselves.
Same with CPS and the Common Core Curriculum. It was designed to keep students dumbed down and now it is only an indoctrination center brain washing these kids to be libs, whatever sex they imagine, everything is racist, fascist and all the other topics to dilute the American dream and way of life.
Keep your heads up and on a swivel.

There isn't the infrastructure to accommodate the vast migration to that city as it is. There is always congestion and car accidents every time I go there compared to 10yrs ago. Now they have gone and made it even worse.

Dems ruin every city they move into, just like...

Exactly. And it's not just a pro-bike mentality, it's an anti-automobile mindset. They want to make driving in the city as difficult as possible for as many people as possible. They don't care how much it cost tax payers or how much it negatively affects business in the city. Green eco-politics is a recipe for higher costs, higher taxes, and less commerce and jobs.

Cyclists do not pay for city stickers, plate stickers or gas tax. All of these fees go towards the road way. Bike lanes with concrete barriers are wasting taxpayer money, stealing from motorist fees and clogging traffic. Not to mention, they block emergency vehicles and slow response times. Now plows cannot clear concrete bike lanes and cyclists are forced to travel with extremely narrowed traffic. This is stupid and dangerous. Who the heck is in charge?

By there being not one bike lane designated along any main avenue where motor vehicles are known to occupy in motion.

Now, bike paths are located nowhere near motor vehicle traffic. Side streets are not main avenues and, thus, not used by motor vehicles as such. Plus, one cannot but recognize, when riding on side streets, the nature of the neighborhoods and so notice where not to ride.

As abundant variations of the paths chosen freely by the cyclist, side streets are it. And, the architectures are fascinatingly varied.

Just pay attention.

The distraction from driving is more from the idiots on bicycles between your passenger side and parked vehicles, which you can only see in your passenger side door mirror, until they slide past you, then again only from that mirror as you slide past them.

These main avenue bike lanes are a hazard to even the most attentive driver.
