Tax Hike Showdown Coming
Conehead is going to kill the city, one way or the other:
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration on Thursday delivered a pointed rebuttal to sharply higher taxes and fees for garbage collection, off-premise liquor sales and rides on Uber and Lyft proposed by a City Council majority determined to avoid the mayor’s proposed corporate head tax.
The 17-page response was delivered to only 23 of the 26 alderpersons who signed a letter to the mayor this week outlining their alternate budget ideas. It was not clear why three other names were not included. But senior mayoral adviser Jason Lee hinted at the reason when he claimed that the slim majority has already seen a few members peel off.
The response was signed by Chief Financial Officer Jill Jaworski, Budget Director Annette Guzman and Comptroller Michael Belsky.
If there is room for compromise, it was tough to tell by the Johnson administration’s response.
From what we can tell, this was the compromise effort. Consider that:
- a garbage fee increase - everyone still needs their garbage picked up, so pretty much everyone is going to pay it. The rate freeze only applies to senior citizens;
- the liquor tax increase is a 50-50 proposition. If you're the planning sort, you'll just stop at any of the nearby suburban shops for your booze. But if it's a short-notice beer-run type situation, you're going to spend the extra money for the time you're saving.
The head-tax that Conehead is insisting on is a long term job killer. Companies are going to leave rather than pay the tax....and they won't be back, meaning a permanent hole in the budget, unlike the always collectable garbage fee and the convenience factor of a liquor tax.
And applying the "amusement tax" to Uber and Lyft rides? We have no idea how they explain that, so we assume they just won't explain it at all....and then wonder why no one is going to shows or shopping or museums.

OT: ‘Appeal to Heaven’— West Virginia Suggests a Secession of Sorts
“When people talk about political division in America, they usually mean red states versus blue states. But what happens when the divide runs straight through a state itself? And what if a group of counties decides the only fix is to switch territories entirely? That’s the debate now emerging from Appalachia, where a West Virginia lawmaker is openly encouraging dozens of counties in Virginia and Maryland to break away and join his state instead. The idea sounds dramatic and almost impossible, yet it’s rooted in real political frustration felt in rural communities across the country, and it raises questions that reach far beyond state borders.
West Virginia Republican Sen. Chris Rose wants to invite others to his state in what he calls an “Appeal to Heaven” movement. In mid-November, Rose urged 30 Virginia counties and three Maryland counties to consider leaving their states and becoming part of West Virginia.”

If local government keeps raising taxes and fees no one will want to live here. It’s a lot harder to get people to move back after they left.
A while back a garbage tax based on weight / volume was proposed, but all the Latino aldermen nixed that because their constituents have 50+ people living in single family homes and generate tons of waste.
26 alderman will cave to their master 🤬
They will pretend they put up a fight.
I don’t care anymore, I’m moving, my taxes are to high and get nothing in return
how about a raggedy tax? everyone walking around the city looking raggedy has to pay a tax,,,,, millions will be collected on the west side and south side
Let me start by saying I love Chicago. It is a beautiful city but an unsafe city. I drove thru the loop last night, yes gun in hand, and still loved its beauty. But this city and its taxes are driving people out. I live 3 minutes from Indiana. Sent my kids to private school in Indiana like most other CPD employees. Get my gas ,$2.81, in Indiana. I do all my shopping in northwest Indiana. If it wasn’t for having to live in this city I’d leave in a heartbeat. You can say this is the reason the economy sucks in Chicago because people shop elsewhere but in reality we know this mayor is by far the worse and a liar. Keep raising taxes and driving big corporations and people out. 5 years to go.
Brandon Baba and the 50 thieves are going to turn this place into a ghost town.
Didn't they just double your real estate tax? and they want more?
How about a Forensic audit of WHO and WHERE these services are actually paid for? Does the garbage truck PASS BY those homes that haven’t paid? If homes/rentals are paid by the gubmint, is the gubmint also paying for these services? What about water bills? Are they actually being paid? How much money is the city owed by non-payers?
In Economics, it is referred to as the point of diminishing returns. When you raise taxes, you increase the revenue the government takes in. But, as you increase taxes more and more, the amount of revenue taken in decreases. People look for alternatives to the higher taxed good, or they simply do without. Eventually you get to the point where revenue decreases. Apparently, no one on the mayor team seems to understand this.
Bingo.
Allowing gambling machines in the city so Jim Banks and all his friends can collect millions while the city collects billions. Should fix the problem for about three years and makes the outfit boys happy.
Look at the lopsided representation-, 14 D to 3 R in Congress (plus both Dems in Senate). Then look at the red-blue map from the last election. My brother lives in Maryland- same thing. Only one R member in Congress.

As well as the pajama wearers on the north side.
Yes, it's good to live in an area near the city limit. Our do good white liberals like to use the term " food deserts" in regards to lack of grocery stores in areas of " blacks and browns". Operating a store on any of these areas has such a slim margin of profitably due to theft , not only from the populace but from employees yet they actually are kept open to serve the people who reside in the area and pay, not steal, from them. When the Socialists pass a head tax Jewel, along with Walgreens and other retailers will close these money losing outlets and move the stores near city boundaries to the other side of the street to whatever suburb is there. Years ago there was a Panerra on 95st near Western. The manager said if the city passed a city minimum wage he would lose the store. He said he would move a couple of blocks into Evergreen to survive. Chicago passed the ordinance and he moved. By the way, the Socialist State of California has a law on the ballot to tax saving accounts. Yes, they're going to tax its residents for saving money. There's going to be a run on mattresses in that state. To quote Margaret Thatcher, "..socialism is good until you run out of the other guys money to spend..."
How about a tax on stupidity? Oh wait, the Illinois state lottery covers that already.
go ahead text if I wait, they'll just throw more of it out the window onto the street... you thought lettering was bad now implement that bullshit
With this clueless moron running Chicago it circling the drain complete financial collapse ! Bankruptcy, death spiral ! Get the fuck out while getting is good !

Double the garbage pick up tax. Tiny Dancer 9.5 started that hustle. Paying exorbitant property taxes didn't cover the garbage pick up. It's out right theft.
Have you seen the latest tax/fee in Illinois? Effective December 1 a 95cent tax on each gallon of paint, of course that is in addition to the local sales tax that went up a 1/4 percent.
