Vest Saves Officer

Morgan Park:

  • A Chicago police officer’s life was saved by his protective vest when he was shot in the chest during a struggle with an armed offender early Sunday on the Far South Side, according to CPD.

Just before 1 a.m., 911 callers reported that their neighbor had a gun and had just broken down their door in the 11400 block of South Davol. That was followed by reports of shots fired.

Officers were on scene quickly and found the disturbance still unfolding. According to police radio traffic reviewed by CWBChicago, arriving officers immediately reported gunfire and issued a 10-1 emergency call. One officer said he had been shot in the chest, but confirmed the round was stopped by his vest.

CWB has the radio traffic link up, only the first minute or so.

The Officer has been treated and released. Offender in fair condition. A third party appears to have been shot by the assailant and possibly return fire.

Glad to hear that the officer is okay. COPA should investigate why officers need to wear bullet proof vests in this city when they go to work. It might enlighten them why officers aim their weapons at people and use force to put people into custody that resist arrest.

I want to mention what a great job the transport unit did! Such smooth and clear transmission over the air and letting everyone know where they were with the officer through the entire route and when they arrived at the hospital. EXCELLENT JOB!
