Building on the post directly below this one, we got an interesting e-mail about the "quiet defunding" going on here in Chicago:
- Hey SCC, just thought you'd like to know. The current manpower levels of the CPD are around 8,000 bodies. That isn't just blue shirts - that is everyone from Larry to the newest rookie. Not only that, the city has just about reached it's hiring numbers for the year, a grand total of 250 officers. Keep in mind there are about 1,000 retirements on tap for 2026, so that's a net loss of 750 bodies.
The letter goes on a bit, but that's the meat of it.
Eight thousand is a ridiculous number for twenty-two District and five Areas.

My district allows unlimited OT, and we still down multiple cars per night and have 3-4 99 cars on midnights. This is with 3-5 POs signing up for OT each night.

This city is being destroyed by the democratic politicians with their extreme policies. I am so sick of living in an upside down world. Chicago will probably be bankrupted within the next 4-8 years. My wife and I are down to move to Florida, but it’s hard to leave my family behind and also the great benefits we have.

Pittsburgh enacted a new policy in 2024 limiting the types of calls they send officers on and directing all others to call for a report over the phone or walk in to a desk for a report. All stations also close their desks with no officers present from 0300-0700 hours. These decisions were made because of a lack of manpower.

I dont't believe this comment. I was at the Chicago Police Retirrement Association meeting Sunday and told the current level of staffing was over 11,000. I think the number was 11,300-11,600.

Let me give you the February, 2026 body count; 9161-8,049; 9164-348; 9165-1,153; 9171-1,340; 9173-268; 9175-33; 9206-120; 9752-38; Now add the others, k-9, swat, B&A and a few more to the grand count comes back to 11,631 that are paying in to the pension fund bi-weekly. Now to make matters worse, hundreds on the medical every day, furloughs, time due, RDO’s which is just one of the components why the troops are so thin in your district and perhaps a unit.

453 actually putting in their retirement PAR form. Another additional 300 new semi-retirees hiding at the district desk, CAPS office or SDSC room (and if put on the street will hit the medical.) And another additional 250-300 actually hitting the medical or IOD this year. So yeah professor...do the math. Well over 1000 "retirees" not working a beat car but taking up a spot. There's reason districts don't have enough manpower to fill a watch on any given day.

I am not concerned about the units listed above or their staffing shortages for whatever reason. If any of those listed units was disbanded today policing operations would not be effected one bit. Calls would still be answered and CPD would operate as if nothing happened. I'd go as far as to claim police services would improve since more beat cars would be available to help. But go ahead and disband the already understaffed district patrol and announce the news to the good residents of Chicago. I'd love to see what happens to the City in less than 2 hours, chaos automatically comes to mind. I work the watch and if I get sick or injured I lay up and I have zero scruples how anyone feels about it. The backbone of the department is treated like the back-end. Always squeezing more out of the lowest unclouted beat coppers. While there are countless females at HQ competing for the Guinness World Record for the longest pregnancy. If you take away the detectives and bosses, I think the number is close to 8k for blue. I think closer to 5k spread thin across 22 districts in patrol.
With 2k of those blue shirts inside somewhere. 22 districts are spread very thin with maybe at best 6k blue shirts in patrol but I doubt it’s even that high. It doesn’t matter the total number because detectives and inside paper weights don’t matter for the battle of the streets. It’s your watch and your districts manpower that matters. How many beat cars are down on your watch every shift? How many are 99? That’s not even counting the do nothings that you won’t see until check off.
Prt,cirt,etc will be disbanded once the new cad system is in place.
I told Catanzara about 5 years ago..........the city will be trying to go to a 12 hour shift. You could see what they were doing. His response...."Never gonna happen".

It has nothing to do with defending BJ, it’s just flat out factually incorrect. CPD is woefully understaffed, but we have way more than 8000 sworn from supe on down. It’s a simple search at work.
God help you. I worked 2 on 2 off(12’s) 20 years ago and it was a horrible schedule on midnights. Days were doable but nights were horrendous. Cannot even imagine 6 on 6 off. Especially for the nightshift officers.
We’re screwed if the Dec 2019 is true. There are guys on the watch who are counting the days to reach 10 and retire. This job is getting worse by the day.

Short bodies means short on bodies. It’s not about letting people off. There are way to many people striving to work inside. People with two years on at the marine unit pushing paper to 6 year wonders working inside pushing paper with weekends off.

No I’m not and I don’t think other officers are either. We see it everyday whether in patrol, detective division , or specialized unit. And all the department does is make up new positions or adds more personnel to already fake soots
Elimination of all sworn administrative assignments, end exempt rank positions. Assign a Captain to every watch Rotate Captain every three months or assign to 12 hour shifts to cover all watches. Increase manpower by 2500. Have a tactical unit assigned to every sector on 1st watch to assist beat cars.
Should rethink that. No security gigs to get out of state. The locals get them. I’m staying right here. Lots of part time jobs for retired coppers.
