More NYPD Shortages

NYPD pensions are based on salary plus overtime, a nifty little benefit. But with the islamo-communist mayor defunding everything that isn't "progressive," thousands of NYPD personnel are likely to bail out at their current rates instead of sticking around to lose money:

  • More than half of the NYPD’s Joint Terrorism Task Force cops can retire right now, along with thousands of sergeants, lieutenants, and captains, worrying officials about the future of terror and crime fighting in Gotham, The Post has learned.

Forty-five of 82 JTTF detectives – or 55% – have 20 years under their belts, which is enough time on the job to leave with a full pension, according to union data.

There are 5,121 active detectives in the NYPD, and 1,193 of them — or 23% — are in the same boat, eligible for a full pension after 20 years.

Another 698 lieutenants, or about 42% of the total 1,669, could retire today; 518 captains, or 66% of the 780, could leave; and 954 sergeants, representing about 22% of the 4,300 total, could exit at any time, according to union data.

Police are concerned that the thousands of veteran NYPD bosses and gumshoes will flee if Mayor Mamdani cuts overtime, which would significantly reduce their pensions, union officials said.

A couple of years ago, there were ambassadors from dozens of mid-to-small city police departments recruiting from blue state $hitholes, including Chicago and New York, grabbing any warm trained body and incentivizing departures with tens-of-thousands of dollars.

We're imagining a lot of NYPD people will be filling these small town departments, greatly reducing opportunities along the way. Make your moves soon.

This is what happens when you elect someone to a job they can’t do. Chicago is in the same boat. No one knows what they are doing.

My cousin left a big city to rural town. Added five years of work, but he thought it was worth it.

I know during one recent hiring at a local St. Louis area municipality, nine New York City cops and six Chicago cops attended the written test and then came back for interviews. I know that a couple of them were hired and they and their family relocated to the St. Louis area. During that same time, one department hired and subsequently fired three rookies straight from the Academy. This was due to the drastic drop, and the quality of recruits. These rookies were so bad and there was no Hope of of retrainging or retaining them.

The sad facts is that in many departments across the country retirement pay is based on the year of highest total pay. Here in South Florida it is not unusual for officers, with the help of their union, to work every overtime gig they can in their last year, sometimes doubling their base pay and resulting in the officers retirement pay being more than their base pay for their last year at work. This is unsustainable. I also know of a department in rural Minnesota that worked this way. Eventually the county manager realized what the numbers were looking like and realized that the police union had to approve the overtime gigs for officers so why not have the union collect the money and pay the officers. When this happened officers lost a big chunk of pension money, but were still pulling in 90% of their highest year of pay with 30 years of service.

Yes, for the officer it is a great system. For the taxpayer who will have to fund this no so.

Just nonsense. It’s not about how many officers can but how many are going to. Also any officer that is in those units now isn’t retiring g. If they eliminate the unit then they might retire retire or maybe hit the medical for a year and then retire if your new spot is not good. Talking a 1000 retires this, never happened never will
Plus most of the retirements would be from working police not the inside people so who would do the work

I retired from the CPD and live in Florida 5 months a year. My next-door neighbor retired from the NYPD. His pension is calculated with his overtime. He stated with his overtime included with his pension he receives an extra $5,000.00 a year.

50% ……. but if you make 300 in your last year with overtime, leaving in 20 years with 150 grand isn’t bad at all.

Don’t get any ideas.
OUR pensions will only be based on regular salary.
OT will NEVER be included.
Our pension fund is in enough trouble, the government isn’t going to add to it.

Tempe, Arizona is hiring as are many other communities here. Not sure of the pay, but you don't work for the Numbskulls or pay the taxes in Illinois. You don't have as many Fuckheads to battle on the street either.

They also have another pension building program. You retire and get hired back at the same time, qualifying for another pension.

Income tax is 2.5% across the board. Property taxes are very low. Groceries are a bit lower as are rents and restaurants. AND you can actually send your kids to the suburban public schools. There is a voucher program to offset the costs of a private school education. Or you can remain one of the 8,000 or so left to turn out the lights.

U.S. Park Police is offering a $75,000 sign on bonus to become the federal tree police. Shit when I was in testing mode there were 2,000 + at every test & most departments were just creating a list 🤯 now I'm too old & I'm sure CPD would hire me. But at 56 I would only be a burden to my partner & fellow officers. Something I am sure these DEI hires could care less about. 4 cops to take down a shoplifter ( not that that matters when under arrest it doesn't matter why) how about the female officer W/ a stove pipe jam who couldn't call for a 10-1 because she forgot her radio. The academy must be teaching new ways to clear a jam. Don't release your mag, finger on the trigger & pointing it into her huge belly. I guess if she kept yelling M-Fing gun won't work that would have cleared the jam😵‍💫🤢🤮

Who would even lateral at this point? This whole profession sucks. Go make significantly less at another department, be micromanaged daily, get shittier benefits/vacation time/medical than CPD just so you can be in a place where people despise you slightly less? No thanks. I'll continue to bring in zeros here. It's really not that hard.

Well said. Thats why there were so many retirements the year or two after 911. They were working 16 hours a day and with all that OT had to retire. As the one comment said. It you make $300K that yr and had 20 on you could work 10 or 15 years more and still get that pension

Is the NYPD pension fund better than Chicago’s?
How is it funded ? Officers can leave with 20 years at any age
