I’m so glad they didn’t make Commander N. Watson’s secretary Emily Payne in the Area One D-Unit a merit detective. She can’t finish processing FOIA requests during regular hours. She requires coming in on the weekends on OT to get them done. Her job literally consist of making copies of detectives case files and scanning the information to the records section. If she receives three FOIA requests a week, that’s a bad day for her. Can you believe Com. N. Watson submitted a merit packet in for this do-nothing? Merit taking care of merit. I would’ve loved to hear her merit interview.

Daniella Arce never worked a beat car. Being a PPO does not count. After her PPO she has worked in units her whole career. She is a very nice person. But she is the very definition of the entire merit process. What has she accomplished that is so exceptional?

Meanwhile there are officers who have tremendous talent, experience and education. They are ignored and overlooked.

Look at all of the diversity! You have a little bit of every race, gender and ethnic background.

For the last detective exam and sergeant exam, part two was an assessment exercise. Assessment my left nut. The department knows that if part two is based on the orders, law, etc. Then they do not get the diversity. If the exam is an assessment exam then viola! They get their diversity.

For all you youngsters with high hopes here is some history for you, a CPD officer named Niall funchion swam the English channel and had to sue to get in the Marine unit. Intelligence and hard work means nothing on this dept. I found out the hard way when I put on a suit and went to a interview for a spot at homan Square and the LT interviewing me came late in her sweatsuit and basically asked me who my sponsor was, I was tempted to drop a big name to see what would happen, of course I had no clout and never put in for anything again. Make the job work for you, dont work for the job.

Detective isn’t a promotion…..

Technically that’s correct. However, it’s a different (higher) pay grade, completely different duties, and you do have to “resign” the title to go back to being a patrol police officer. And if you think a detective doesn’t outrank a P.O. on an investigation…good luck with that.

3/07/2026 04:09:00 PM

Part one of the exam is based on the orders. Part two is based on an assessment exercise that analyzes your judgement skills and this part of the test has subjective/grey areas as well. This is how the city is able to engineer the end result they want.

You can play the game that is offered to you (drink the cool aid) or you can implement this life hack, be a master of your own game Finance your house for 15 years and pay it off sooner. Drive a 4 cylinder Japanese car; it will probably last you for over 20 years. That is enough for your to retire with a pension. You do not need a $1,000 car payment, because you are not impressing anyone; we know how much money you make. After you retire, sell your house that you only made the required repairs on (no fancy upgrades) for over double of what you paid for. And sell it “as is.”

Here is a bonus professional tip; earn a useful degree from a legitimate school. It is a beautiful thing, because the city will pay for it. As of right now, some of you do not have the skills required to write a decent resume. Now, you are running with the best.

Do not let this job have an iron clad leash on you. If you let that happen, then you will be working until the mandatory retirement age and making pension payments so that the early retirees can get paid.

And the best type of revenge on your yokel acquaintances is living better than they do, especially the dispatchers; you can have your second house in a great neighborhood acquired well before you retire. And here is a little more advice, the people who earn the spot based on “score” probably cheated, very few people make it on score. That is correct they even get the first part of the multiple choice question to study.

And the lesson is over.

Signed,

The OG Cop

Speaking of being a detective, what is going on with the dispatchers at the OEMC? Has anyone been fired? Has anyone quit in an effort to minimize the repercussions like jail time? Karma is a b@#ch! Someone asked this question in a previous discussion, “does the discharged loan have to be reported as income?” The answer is yes (for the majority of the dispatchers and everyone else who fraudulently obtained the loan or improperly used the loan proceeds). Mr. Tax Man, please set up shop at the Chicago OEMC to get your numbers, you will earn a promotion, rise through the ranks, and make a name for yourself, become the next Elliot Ness, “She gone! You miss me long time?”

I for one welcome and endorse DEI hiring, every time that I have a new IOD claim, the personnel at the Medical Section treat it as a clean slate, a fresh 365 more days. Even if I go back on medical leave for an existing IOD injury, the same people treat it as a new incident because I was back to work for 30 days. In the last six years, I have been off from work for about 4 years. Keep DEI hiring alive and well. I have not even used up any Light Duty time, yet. I will be off through the summer of 2026.

3/07/2026 04:09:36 PM

Yep! As a Detective I was told I was just a PO assigned as a Detective. This is true. But when I showed up to a crime scene or had a crazy job assigned to me all of a sudden if something went wrong they all said "but the detective told us to do that!" Years ago I had a messed up job and told the District Sgt, Lt and Capt what to do. They messed up and tried to blame it on me. Luckily I had a great Commander who called them out. Im glad Im retired and hope my fellow Detectives have good bosses who back them up.

Papp is the biggest clown in the dept never seen an ego so big. He gave a speech at a promo class and bragged about himself getting the most guns in patrol, and merit is great bc he’s merit and f anyone who hates merit. Then he said “friends call me that I’ve known for years and say can I come work with you, and his response no you work for me”. If that doesn’t scream egomaniac clown then I dunno what does

I would also like to add to your statement by saying that the consent decree has destroyed CPD. Cannot blame the new guys for trying to be the police, but you are spot on about the thin skin and sensitivity about EVERYTHING. Can't swear, can't pursue on foot or car....can't even touch anyone without a TRR.....so much fn training - elearning that it truly never ends. Hated by all, stabbed in the back by our own bosses, our own unions, politicians and fellow officers alike. The second they get a sniffle....boom medical. The sickest group of supposedly young healthy people I've ever seen and the biggest bunch of know-it-alls who know absolutely nothing. To those of you trying to be the police still, I salute you! Just listen to an old timer on the job once and awhile.....there's a reason why they're still on the job. For God sake just be fn dependable, you dont have to be a superstar, wear the correct uniform and have some pride in it for God's. Stay safe everyone.

A lot of strokes on here complaining about anyone suggesting that DEI has an impact on this department.

Can’t believe that anyone is that naive or stupid not to recognize the demographics in the “ivory” tower or within the ranks. So it must be the DEI’s themselves trying to dim the light that we shine upon them.

You were promoted to Detective. There is a promotion class and graduation, and two pay grades higher then an Officer. After 30 years I have only seen one officer ask to go back to the District and that was in mid 2000s. All of these new DEI detectives with no experience will all be assigned to SVU with the rest of the retards. They walk around talking about how stressful it is saving the children but everyone on the floor is smart enough not to believe it. The true fact about SVU, the offender is already identified, no photo arrays, no search warrants, 95 % of the victims don’t want to prosecute.
The only requirement to work in SVU is that you have to be weird.

Upon sitting down with the commander. I was told "you're not going to be selected this is a formality for me and I was given name to put in already". Commander said out of his hands and wasn't happy about it. Was waste of my time but did respect the honesty....lol

He got two picks because he oversees the bureau of counter terrorism. Has a lot of personnel under him. Its not just a district, its multiple units that do a lot of work. I dont know who his picks are but that is probably why. But you wouldnt comprehend it anyway. This comment shows just how truly ignorant you are. Child-victim crimes are maybe 20% of what SVU does. And guess what else - a huge majority of agg batt to senior cases have an unknown offender. And since you brought it up - ever conduct an investigation with a “retarded” (as you call them) victim? Of course not. You’re “too busy” investigating Ray Ray vs Pookie. You’re not saving the world, loser. You’re just working more than you should in order to keep your stupid kid in special school and your ballooning wife in the all-you-can-eat buffet line. I call bullsh*t. I took the Detectives exam in the early 2000’s. Scored well, 715ish out of 5000, didn’t get promoted. Took the test in 2016. Scored in the 150’s, then got promoted right away. However, several people promoted between 350 and 650 on the earlier test were/are great detectives. Should there have been over 10 years between tests, absolutely not, but a ton of good detectives came off of that list. I’ve worked with and learned from several of them.

I usually come on this blog just to read the comments after promotional classes. DEI? C’mon y’all can do better than that. Patronage, family ties, romantic relationships, political affiliation, maybe even financial considerations, are more likely reasons for merit promotion. My point, stop worrying about, and spewing, every damn excuse in the book, then open up a book and study. Coppers can be there own worst enemy. Quit bitching, study or work harder, either way someone may take you seriously.
