Two children and two adults are dead, and two other children are injured after a house fire in Chicago's West Englewood neighborhood early Wednesday morning, Chicago police said.
The Chicago Fire Department battled the 2-11 alarm fire in the 6000 block of South Paulina Street, which was extinguished just before 3 a.m. CFD said six people were rescued from the fire and initially taken to local hospitals in serious condition.
Chicago police later said that a man and a woman suffered severe burns and were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Four kids, including three boys, ages 14, 15, and 16, and an 8-year-old girl, were taken to Comer Children's Hospital.
Police confirmed that the two adults, the 8-year-old girl, and the 15-year-old boy later died.
The fire is being investigated as an arson, which would mean all four deaths are homicides. Keep an eye on how they are classified them moving forward.
But our question is this - did the equipment issues (disabled tower ladders, engine and truck shortages) have anything to do with the ability to respond and extinguish the blaze?
This high of a casualty count in a fire is rare these days, so it's a legit question that should be asked.

I had to transport children that died in a fire to the morgue years ago. 3 of them.
Who would have such a strong grudge against the adults or teenagers that someone would deliberately set the building ablaze?
As much as I am not a fan of the CFD's apparatus & equipment procurement processes, I think this fire was well involved before the 911 call was made. The first company on the scene landed in under 3 minutes.
A lot of factors here and as simple as it sounds, the main factor is working smoke detectors! That area has some of CFD's best firefighters and I am sure they did their usual selfless work to bring out the victims (sounds like CPD assisted - thanks) and stop fire spread (they saved an adjacent structure).
Thanks for all you do SCC!
I worked in the CFD fire cause and origin unit (OFI/Office of fire investigation) and I can tell you this: 99.999999999999 of ALL fires in society are set by human hands. The single remaining fire not set by some asshole? Mice with matches.
May they RIP, as far as how does Service fire vehicles there are many of them being repaired at Chicago truck repair about 7401 S. Central in Bedford Park Illinois. Amazing how we don’t even have a contractor in the city of Chicago. We are throwing our tax money outside the city to connected clown that is a friend of Brandon‘s. And the bigger question is is the shot even qualified? They also have a ton of garbage trucks and other city vehicles sitting there. Wonder if they’re just fixing them with scotch tape and getting paid multimillions following some of it back correct? Just axing.
No jokes about ceiling crickets - 9volt batteries are $2 each, replace all you smoke detector batteries today. If the detector is over ten years old, replace the detector. second tip - don't leave tool/toy batteries charging while you sleep.
prayers for the survivors and for the brave men who went into the fire to rescue that family.
