Parking
When we posted about the parking conditions over at the wake and funeral for Officer Bartholomew yesterday, we didn't expect so much whining about it. We were just warning people to plan ahead.
The family gets to choose the location of services and Special Events does what they can to make it work as well as they can. They've done great work in the past under similar circumstances.
Some commentators suggested car pooling and Uber rides. Someone else said the Park District is going to make lakefront parking available.
How about this - the Department had dozens of those 15 passenger vans they used for events and deployments in the past. Have those cleaned up and station three or four at the following locations:
- 019 - huge parking lot
- 020 - multistory parking garage
- 024 - Streets and San Ward yard
Then run a shuttle service to and from St. Andrew's.
There are ways around the parking issue and that shouldn't be something that deters members from attending to show the family support during this trying time.

I suggested the same this morning to a retiree....
"Hope the department is smart enough to do that?"
WE'LL SEE!
its confirmed they will close LSD and have plenty of extra space just behind and in front of the church. The department needs to get the order out ASAP
The department bosses are goofy and couldn’t do anything right. I have no confidence in anything being done by the current administration.
My sympathies and prayers to the grieving family.
019 is fine if you use Belmont/Western. 850 W. Addison can’t be used because of the Cubs game.
Run shuttles to/from lakefront from Foster Ave amd close down Bryn Mawr from LSD to Sheridan. Just a suggestion.
God forbid we have to attend and or march for anybody killed in the line of duty again. May God be with John and his family. Plan accordingly and pray for him and his family dearly.
Well that’s just common sense - look whose in charge of these things
How about using cta busses like the city does for special events in Brandon’s neighborhood? Commandeering a few would work!
any bets the civilian ticket writers for the city will out in force around the funeral writing tickets to everyone they can?
It was absolutely astonishing to read all of the comments from officers complaining about the lack of parking.
We have a department full of whiners and selfish people.
Be a little proactive. Show some respect and compassion towards the family and church of our fallen officer.
The have it covered. LSD will end at Bryn Mar and they are converting LSD in both directions from Bryn Mar to Hollywood to a big Parking lot and that’s where the procession and vehicle parking will be. They already have this all set.
Department will close down a lane of traffic on lake shore drive for parking. Parking is tight in that area.
Thank you SCC for clarifying this point that this is a decision for the family to make. I have Greek Orthodox family who “explained” (IYKYK) the faith and traditions to me in pointed detail. Shorthand version is as a deeply Greek Orthodox observing family doesn’t and shouldn’t care about this city or anyone else being “inconvenienced” or their churches lack of available parking options. This family is hurting more than any of us will hopefully ever have to endure. A long walk to pay our respects is the least we an offer for someone who will never walk amongst us again. 🇬🇷🙏
If I may, to quote my late sister, "Common sense is not that common" and that was said 30 years ago!
I would close LSD to SPITE the lawless SOB's in this city!
Mayor Johnson has already ordered strict enforcement of parking rules within a six block radius of the wake and funeral.
Some of the most narcissistic whiners I’ve ever met in my goddamn life. Either go, or don’t go. But don’t complain about it on a fucking blog where for all you know the family can read comments.
God damn coppers complain about everything.
get off your entitled clouted -ss and walk im will walikng if i have too
I know this is a dangerous option, but you can always flash the badge, ride public transportation and then walk a few blocks.
totally agree !
yup
i agree with you i will bcpd 016 - retired
Like the ones writing tickets at midnight this pasted week, green vest w green reflect lines.
Why would the bosses care. The have their drivers drop them off and pick them up or they bring their take home and park illegally or in a designated area for bosses
I don’t think so Department can’t be that stupid
There are a lot of whiners out there
No keeses for them!!!!
Let's remember that this is all for the family. May G-d have mercy on us all
This Officer walks among us. We just can't see him.
So if parking is a problem, MAKE IT WORK. Think of something.
People on this job b*tch about every single thing, it’s pretty disgusting!

You must be new or high
Finally someone that understands faith and sacrifice💙🙏🏼
+1
Park at the beach area. Foster beach to Lawrence Ave back has plenty of parking. It’s not that long a walk
Plenty of parking along Lakefront from Foster to Montrose. Why doesn't the CTA, streets & San or CDOT run shuttlebusses or vans?
Oh, right. First responders don't matter to this City Hall.
Funeral arrangements for a fallen Greek Orthodox officer in Chicago draw a grieving city together in remembrance.
CHICAGO — Funeral services have been announced for John G. Bartholomew — a 38-year-old Greek Orthodox police officer in Chicago who was killed in the line of duty — as family, colleagues, and the wider community prepare to honor his life and service. Bartholomew's end of watch was April 25, 2026.
Visitation will take place on May 7 from 2 to 8 p.m., with a Trisagion Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m., at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church. The funeral service is scheduled for May 8 at 10 a.m. at the same location. Interment will be private, and memorial donations are being directed to the John Bartholomew Memorial Fund at the National Police Federal Credit Union.
A nearly 11-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Bartholomew was known as a devoted husband and father, survived by his wife, Renee, and three children. Friends and colleagues remembered him for his faith, generosity, and unwavering dedication to serving others.
"John will be remembered as a devoted family man whose life was defined by love, loyalty, and service," his obituary states. "He was always the first to step in and help others, known for his generosity and willingness to give without hesitation. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including his love for good food, his admiration for Batman, and his unmistakable, contagious laugh that could light up any room. He was deeply dedicated to his work as a Chicago police officer, serving his community with honor, integrity, and an unwavering sense of duty. With a strong knowledge of history and a passion for sharing it, John left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered."
Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. Elpidophoros led the funeral for Elder Joseph in New York.
