Someone got the recipe wrong....again:
Chicago emergency crews responded to 35 suspected opioid overdose cases Tuesday, nearly twice the city’s daily average of 19, prompting the Chicago Department of Public Health to issue a warning about a possible spike in overdoses. The 35 suspected opioid-related EMS responses were concentrated in South Shore and Chatham, CDPH said.
The spike does not mean 35 people died or that all 35 cases have been confirmed as opioid overdoses, but the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program, a real-time surveillance system used to identify possible overdose clusters, identified the cluster.
CDPH urged people to carry naloxone, commonly known as NARCAN, the medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. Officials also delivered a blunt warning about ingesting counterfeit or other pills not prescribed by a doctor and dispensed by a pharmacy.
The department did not identify a specific drug or source as the cause of Tuesday’s increase. However, fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times more potent than heroin, has become a leading driver of overdose deaths in the United States. While it was once most commonly found mixed into heroin, it is now frequently detected in cocaine, counterfeit prescription pills, methamphetamine, and other illicit drugs, often without users’ knowledge.
As we've stated in the past, we had some bad family experiences with narcotics, so NARCAN was always a hard "no" from us. Our relatives would have been far better off if that problem child had died of an overdose rather than stealing and burglarizing family homes to support his bad habits.
Society would be far better off if junkies overdosed and got trundled off to landfills by Streets and San rather than spending ambulance rides, medical care and doctors' efforts on what will be a vicious endless cycle of wasted time, resources and lives.

In LA the City provides the narcotics and paraphernalia to the bust outs which increases the population in the homeless camps and the overdoses. One has to wonder what kinds of drugs the politicians are on to come up with such a program!
Your comment regarding addicts is very harsh. My son got caught up in drugs when his dad a CPD Officer left the family the day after his graduation. He was in a deep depression. He didn’t burglarize anyone or hurt anyone physically. Mentally he hurt out family but for you to use a blanket comment like junkie is insulting. He is now three years clean. Many CPD suffer from alcoholism - what is your insulting term for them ? Are they going around burglarizing also since alcohol is sometimes more expensive than street drugs? narcan saved my son. Please do not lessen the value of it.

You are entitled to your personal feelings about addiction, but advocating that people experiencing an overdose should be allowed to die rather than receive Narcan is not simply “having an opinion.” An opioid overdose is a medical emergency, and naloxone is a lifesaving medication specifically designed to reverse opioid-induced respiratory depression long enough for emergency medical care to be provided.
Addiction is a medical disorder, not a death sentence. People do not become undeserving of emergency medical treatment because they made choices you disagree with. We don’t decide who is worthy of CPR, insulin, blood transfusions, or an ambulance based on how their medical crisis happened.
And there is an important distinction between being frustrated by the devastating effects of addiction and publicly expressing a desire for people to die. The latter is especially troubling when coming from someone entrusted with protecting and serving the public.
I have personally witnessed the devastation addiction can cause to a family, so I am not speaking from some naive perspective that addiction doesn’t destroy lives. I understand the anger, exhaustion, fear and heartbreak that families experience. But precisely because I understand that devastation, I cannot accept the idea that someone who overdoses should simply be left to die.
Narcan does not “reward” addiction. It gives a person another chance to survive. What they do with that chance afterward is another matter.
We should be able to have serious conversations about accountability, treatment, repeat overdoses, the burden on first responders, and the failures of our addiction-treatment system without dehumanizing people or suggesting that their lives have no value.
As a police officer, you have a position of public trust. I sincerely hope you recognize how profoundly inappropriate and dangerous it is to publicly advocate withholding lifesaving medical intervention from a class of people because of their illness.

Imagine a decent person needing an ambulance but they have to wait too long because some drug addict overdosed again and the closest ambulance is busy with the drug addict. The decent person dies and the drug addict lives another day to do it all over again. Drug addicts are a scourge to society. Just look at the blue cities. As I victim of crime committed against me by chronic drug users, costing me money and seeing no consequences to them, I came to the conclusion they should be incarcerated and provided unlimited quantities of drugs. Give them counseling and 3 chances to get clean or give them as much of what they want. They can have a drug buffet for all I care.
The burden should be 100% on the families, instead most pass it off to the government and the rest of society.
If your loved one is an addict, the family has the responsibility to provide the necessary treatments and not burden the rest of society.

I have met a lot of homless drug addicts in my career. It takes them almost 10 years to be a full blown addict, during that incubation time they are considered a functional addict. They will lie cheat and steal from anyone to get to their next fix. They have NO moral code exists for them while they are addicted. They prey on the average citizen for the easiest route to to acquire their drugs. Beg, buy, steal etc...they choose to live in squalor infested with parasites and god knows what pathogens. And when their lives necessitate police intervention they are usualy shoplifting or beaking into someones car. . Maybe we should have a conversation about which actions actualy enable these addicts and cause their numbers to multiply as they have been doing for about a decade. If some one CHOOSES to begin using illegal drugs, the onus is not upon society to snap them out of it. The percentages are very low and the recidivism rate is almost 100 percent. The cold hard truth is that they have to hit bottom and really want help to begin with. 99.9 percent of addicts when asked just want more drugs, and not real help. So, get off of your sanctimonious ass and put your money where your mouth is. One person can make a difference here. Offer these poor people some help yourself. Hint...money only enables them. Blankets and jackets just let them continue down the wrong path a while longer. Dont sit back and wait for government to do something. Thats how we got here in the first place.

It always bothered me that people consider using drugs a medical condition. You're now putting it in the same classification as cancer, ms, etc. People made a decision to do drugs. No one forces anyone (unless you're being trafficked) to start doing coke or heroin. Drug addicts ruin everything they touch and they will destroy their families. They will do absolutely anything to get more drugs and they wreak havoc everywhere they go. Don't try and make people feel bad for feeling this way. Sorry, it's a waste of resources for a hospital to have doctors and nurses treating 6 or more drug addicts every night when there are decent humans that need treatment. I got clean and sober over 20 years ago with help from CPD EAP unit. Sorry you had such a bad experience with your family member, but I’ve met hundreds of former addicts, myself included, who got help and are honorable people, and great neighbors today.
I’ve been a reader of the blog for years, and really appreciate your work on it, but I don’t expect to change your mind, my hope is your younger readers who may encounter those addicted won’t write them off as you and some of your commenters do.
And don't forget the inderdiction efforts that seize hundreds of pounds of drugs where the couriers are no longer detained upon discovery.

Theres no such thing as an accidental overdose if the addict willingly took the drugs. We need a law that gives the addict a right to die. No amount of ressusitating or enabling will ever bring them out of their poor choices for the last 10-15 years. We pay higher prices for shoplifting at every single store. If there wer eless of them we could attempt to treat them, but we are knee deep in shit today and no one is shoveling.

My comment wasn't uneducated. I am a retired police officer. Dealing with drug addicts was a pain in the ass. They are filthy, diseased and use resources of first responders without paying into the system. They waste the time of police and fire when they could be helping elsewhere. It was a real pleasure for all of us having to come in contact with them and their diseases, used needles they carried, their open, oozing sores and MRSA. It was a blast worrying about catching that shit, putting us at risk to get sick and possibly getting our loved ones sick. They also had lots of upper respiratory infections and coughed continously. I won't even touch upon how combative they can be. You think I should feel bad for thinking this way? Their choices affect everyone in society. Little kids are exposed to their bullshit too. You clearly never had to deal with little babies in the back seats of cars, dirty, hungry, diapers full of shit and used needles all around them while their parents, high on heroin, just made a purchase on the west side and driving high, not giving a damn about their kids. You’re forgetting about the people who become addicted to opioids because they are mindlessly given prescription painkillers by doctors who basically give them out like candy. Then when that source dries up the addicts turn to the streets. And not just painkillers. All sorts of mental health medication is handed out with no oversight about who is getting what and what might be contraindicating.

At this point in time, people should know that these meds are potentially addictive, and not to always trust doctors. Remember the COVID "vaccine"? First they said it would keep you from getting COVID, then they said you can still get it, but it won't be as severe. They also said it would keep you from transmitting COVID, then that turned out not to be true either. You have to take some responsibility for your health care, not simply trust pill-pushing doctors. Sad, but that's the way it is.
I don’t think anyone is forgetting it’s just that their ignorance lumps them all in together. Alcoholics destroy the lives of their families as well but they are seen as victims and the life of the party. Going to work barely sober and many officers on call back section due to this. They are given chance after chance and many end up with dui’s and no one bats an eye for the poor officer. Hearing the bitterness on here I can see why no one wants to work at CPD. Gone are the days of thousands applying. The stance on narcan on this post sums up what many think of CPD- they don’t care. Thank you to those officers who still have not been tarnished but those who forgot why they took the job. Thank god they aren’t firemen going to a crack house because they would not put the fire out.
Most officers took the job to make life better for the community. It's not bitterness to point out that drug addicts don't make any community better. It's truth and reality. What's sad and pathetic is the number of people who feel so sorry for the drug addicts but forget the numerous victims and issues they create. All of you sympathizers also make communities worse by your tolerance and your superiority complex by thinking you're so great for showing pity and compassion for these people . As most of you tend to be hypocrites, you'd want any drug addict removed if they made a home in front or back of your residence. I highly doubt you'd invite them in to eat, shower and sleep.
Yeah, I get that people should not mindlessly trust their doctors. But chronic, agonizing pain can severely impact the decision-making process. The conscientious doctors only prescribe the stuff for short-term recovery, which is why people doctor shop. But this is becoming harder to do with the digital sharing of records.
The same people who have sympathy for officers who are alcoholics. Alcoholics are many times domestic battery offenders and at fault on accidents.
