Springfield Morons at it Again

There's no way this passes Constitutional muster....and it seems to run against existing Federal Law:

  • A first-of-its-kind state law would force gun manufacturers to pay for a portion of the financial toll of gun violence in Illinois.

Gun violence costs the state about $20 billion annually, according to estimates based on data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That figure includes direct costs like emergency services, medical care, law enforcement resources and funeral expenses. It also includes indirect costs like mental health treatment, loss of income and childcare.

Illinois is paying funeral costs? Why?

  • The Responsibility in Firearms Legislation Act, a bill coming before the Illinois General Assembly, would require gunmakers to contribute to a state fund that would help offset the costs shouldered by taxpayers and the individuals directly affected by a shooting.

If passed, the law would be a first of its kind in the country. Other states have considered similar bills, but none have become law.

“Name another industry in this country that gets to sell a product, profit from the damage it does and pay nothing for it,” said state Rep. Kevin Olickal during a news conference Tuesday morning outside the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Gee whiz.....how about clothes dryers? Gas ovens? Sharp knives? Extension cords and electrical appliances? Pools, wall mounted TVs, cleaning chemicals, etc. All of these things can damage or kill people....and do kill people on a daily basis.

The key here is to have knowledge of the danger, properly maintain the device and don't use it outside of the manufacturers' instructions.

  • “When a car is defective, the automaker pays. When a drug harms patients, the manufacturer pays. Tobacco pays. Asbestos pays. Opioid companies are paying right now. That is how accountability works in every industry but one: firearms,” said Olickal, who is sponsoring the House version of the Responsibility in Firearms Legislation Act.

Wrong you moron. And you actually prove it in your screed - "defective." A gun is a legal device and when maintained and used properly, functions as designed, thereby rendering your entire argument pointless.

You aren't holding Ford, Chevy or any of the other dozens of vehicle manufacturers liable when a drunk misuses their product to kill innocents....because they tell you not to operate the car unsafely or when impaired. If you've ever bought a gun, the paperwork that comes along with one rivals many automobile user manuals.

But holding criminals responsible for the misuse of legal products has never been big on the lib-tarded radar. It would actually solve problems while cutting into their voting totals. If passed, this will cost Illinois more millions of dollars in taxpayer money for a losing proposition.

Could we talk about the dollar savings associated with “gun violence.” How about the savings in incarceration costs? A large percentage of homicide victims earned their bullets through criminal activities. Their deaths saves millions per person in incarceration costs over a lifetime.
How about the savings in unwanted illegitimate children? The dead can’t breed. No money spent on school, link card and medical coverage for these little government dependents, to subsidize the mistakes of their absentee sperm donors.
If we did an honest accounting, Illinois might find it should be paying the gun industry for all these savings.

How about holding the 13% accountable for their criminal behavior. You get arrested then you lose all welfare benefits forever. If anyone receiving welfare benefits allows them to dwell in a government supported housing location, then they lose welfare benefits. Then actually hold the 13% accountable for their criminal acts. No more marginalized community members who have 3, 10 20, 50 felony convictions. 3 strikes you're out. Try that and see what happens to the crime rate. We need to rid this country of the soft on crime politicians.

They're trying to skirt the U.S. Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). SCOTUS has shot down other attempts of such non-sense, i.e. when Mexico tried to sue S&W for selling products ending up in Mexico.

They fear they're going to lose in the last bad law they made, the assault weapons ban. Like petulant children, they're looking to throw another roadblock up. Why not? They've got nothing to lose but your tax money.

Defective parenting…will govt hold itself responsible for what it has done to harm the family unit with misguided legislation?

What about the dangerous “guests” they enticed with our taxpayer funds to cross the border illegally that killed citizens here?

Let's start by holding these judges accountable when they FAIL to put offenders (trigger pullers) in jail.

There's no such thing as gun violence. No gun ever pulled its own trigger.

Glad I left that shithole. My biggest current resentment is that I have to get that stupid LEOSA card every year just to drive through Illinois to visit family. Every other state that I frequent is reciprocal constitutional carry. Good luck.

This will never hold weight. Think about this...involved in a traffic accident where the other driver didn't have a license or was intoxicated and you were hurt or your vehicle was totaled. Precedent would then be set to sue the car manufacturer. How about suing city of Chicago for returning an impounded vehicle back to an unlicensed, suspended or revoked driver and then they go back out and cause injury, death or property damage. Precedent has been set, law passed.

I am with you on that point. I am personally tired of the renaming of things to win arguments that is so popular lately. "Gun violence" rather than "Gun crime" simply removes the responsibility aspect of shooting someone and replaces it with a generalized sense of inevitability. "Immigrant" rather than "Illegal immigrant" and now magically, and by definition every person who opposes illegal immigration (in a nation OF immigrants) becomes anti-immigrant and fundamentally flawed. "Justice affected individual" rather than "Defendant" or "Victim" is just a crass attempt to suggest that Defendants and Victims are equally to blame for their role in whatever happened. It's becoming trite to say this, but since it happens all the time lately - it is Orwellian.

The reason for most of the gun violence is due to the defective criminal justice system that spins the offenders right back onto the street with no repercussions.

What? Another perk for the Free Shit Army wherein one thug shoots and kills dead another thug, with a stolen gun? We pay to patch them up, free hospital care, (average gunshot victim care in the hundreds of thousands of Medicaid dollars) now gotta pay to bury them? Through another stupid Dem law? Guns in and of themselves don’t kill- people and folks do!

Yes it costs the tax payers money to fight but they don't care. The real issue it costs the people that fight it money too, and they don't have a bottomless pit of money to pull from. This is the whole strategy of states that pass these unconstitutional laws. Bleed the opposition while enforcing laws they know eventually will be found unconstitutional.

What people don’t know and they don’t want known is that when one of the CPS superstars becomes a “victim” there is a special fund available. Public money is used to provide burial expenses for them. A representative (reverend) always goes to the victims family and if necessary an offer is made. Which it always is, So whoever came up with the cradle to grave slogan was right on the money.

They know they will lose it, the object is to put up another unconstitutional law they can enforce while its being fought in court. They don't care about the taxpayer footing the legal bills as long as they force the opposition to pay legal bills.

These progressives want to find a failure in anything other than the people themselves. Enough is enough. Start putting these gun possessors in jail. No more first offender programs or any other failed progressive programs. If a certain segment of society was incarcerated this wouldn’t even be a conversation..

every politician that supports sanctuary policy should have to pay a fund to compensate citizen victims. the same for every judge who lets a criminal walk who then commits another crime.

Maybe take it off the welfare fund. you allow criminals to live for free for life while committing crimes. Convicted of a felony no living assistance for you. Arrested on a felony pause on your assistance. Parent are held accountable for there kid actions as well bet you start seeing a sharp decline in crime.
