Back in the day 1969 when I was hired most of us were former military. When I applied the list was a mile long. Everyone wanted to be a PO. Now they can't even find warm bodies to take a test. You can go to several suburbs near Chicago where the pay is just about the same. I moved out of the Clearing area shortly after I retired.

Nobody with a half brain wants to apply for a police job in Chitcago. Suburbs pay is the same or more and you dont have to deal with southside or westside "community". If you want decent applicants increase the start salary to $120,000.
As a travel agent I treat this job as my second job. Come to work, answer oemc calls, cut the paper and go home. I don't do any street or traffic stops or any other proactive police work. Even if I on-view drive-by shooting I don't chase the car. Just bare minimum I call for the ambulance and do the report. I love how our general order says that you can not get in trouble for not chasing. I love it!!!
