Gunshots Cost How Much?

Our readers have been pointing this out for eight or ten years now - but now someone is figuring it out?
  • The charges started racking up the moment Annette Johnson arrived at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to her left forearm. Doctors sliced open Johnson's arm and installed a $500 metal plate to shore up her shattered ulna, securing it with numerous bone screws that cost $246 apiece. There were morphine drips to quell pain, tetanus shots to prevent infection, blood screens and anesthesia.

Two years earlier in a different part of the city, Leo Leyva arrived at a North Side hospital with a gunshot wound to his back. His last memory before going under anesthesia was a nurse telling him they were going to take good care of him and to count up to 10. As the 18-year-old drifted off, the emergency room team at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center went to work to save his life, starting IV lines and X-raying his chest and abdomen before performing an emergency surgery to remove the bullet and repair the damage.

For both Johnson and Leyva, just two of the thousands of gunshot victims in Chicago every year, the first hours and days of their hospital treatment were only the start of what would be costly recoveries that continue to this day. Still, the bills for their initial treatment were staggering. In his first 35 minutes at the hospital, Leyva had racked up $21,521 in charges, and by the time he was released three weeks later the bill totaled more than $157,000. For Johnson, who spent barely 24 hours at Mount Sinai, the hospital charges approached $27,000.
And that's only part of the bill:
  • And even that figure represents just a fraction of the total billed. While the hospitals charge for room and board as well as equipment and drugs, the surgeons, anesthesiologists and other medical professionals who treat gunshot victims in emergency rooms across the city typically bill separately.
And guess who's paying? We'll give you a hint - it's seldom the people with the holes in their bodies.

Progressive democrats like Dart, Prekwinkle, Foxxx et al all raise the arguement that it costs too much taxpayer money to incarcerate or house violent criminals. Most shootings have multiple gunshot victims and costs to taxpayers are enormous. From an economics standpoint, wouldn't it be cheaper to keep the recidivists locked up given those committing the actual acts of mass destruction and their proven propensity to commit additional acts of violence once released being given just one more chance to turn their life around?

And by the way, when was the last time a progressive democrat had an actual interest in saving taxpayers money? And why are those charged with the relentless shooting, robbing and killing have the commom theme of being recently released on personal recognizance or I-bonds, parole, electronic monitoring or on active probation? Keep 'em locked up and may the Rham-O-Cide numbers will plumment like the approval ratings of the city council.

My concern is that the ambulance ride courtesy of the City of Chicago will not get paid. When the city sends out that ambulance service bill, who will pay for these lifesaving efforts? The ambulances and e.m.s. personnel provide emergency services which may be a thing of the past given so many "poor" or "criminally justice involved" ridership refuse and won't ever pay their bills leading to trauma taxi bankruptcy or a critical E.M.S. funding crisis.

But if it is determined that one has the means to pay for ambulance services, letters seeking payment requesting payment from your insurer, medicaid or personally follow with a threat of turning this unpaid city debt over to a collection agency. Incidently, the collection agency has numerous municipal contracts with coincidently democrat controlled governments. Maybe its time to introduce another 911 tax to your celluar bill never to the holders of obama phones or pass a property tax increase onto homeowners never section 8 recipients.

I am so happy to see this article made print. Preckwinkle, Foxx and the rest of the liberal morons keep trying to convince people that the cost of locking up criminals is too high. They disguise their racially based radical social agenda as a fiscal issue. As this article points out, the cost of NOT locking bad guys up is much higher than the cost of locking them up. NOT locking them up has only served to embolden them in their disrespect for authority and their desire to cause havoc and harm. NOT locking them up has allowed them to go out into the streets and create enormous expense caused by their violence. NOT locking them up is bankrupting this city, state and country. Preckwinkle and Foxx are a dangerous scourge.

Huh?

Combat medics and military surgeons have been
doing training stints at Chicago level 1 trauma
centers since at least the early 90's.

Where have YOU been?
Under a rock or something?

Gun-Shot trauma care and therapy/rehab
for the members of Dude Inc., that wholly
owned subsidiary of Rahm & Co., is being
used as a weapon against upright citizens
ever being able to take their city/municipal
government back via the ballot box.

If you taxpayers want your city back you will
have to be willing to take up conservatism and
the bullet box since they've nullified the ballot box.

The cumulative cost of Dude's trauma care is the
massive hidden tax that the democrats and their
Liberal Progressive/Alinskyite kin don't want YOU
PEOPLE wising-up and talking about.

The same kind of massive hidden tax that was
folded into that monstrous atrocity known as
Obama Care.

...And the sick, twisted fucks who were instrumental
in foisting Obama Care on this nation have all grudgingly
admitted that it was nothing but an income siphoning
scheme aimed directly at the many to pander to the few
who make up Democratic voting catered-to constituencies.

They cynically dressed it up in, "taking care of the less
fortunate" to keep the taxpaying citizenry from recognizing
what it really was.

Another attempt at nullifying the ballot box.
Or so they thought.

The recent election showing that perhaps the citizenry
haven't been lulled into as deep a sleep as they thought.

So now what?

The gunshots holes are free, the criminals go free and the porkwinkle bullet tax is a scam.
We all know hospitals are not charity wards, St Roger's is the exception.
They're here to make money, from the wage earning individual, through their insurance coverage and lastly and mostly Medicare-Medicaid.
Not too many working people are getting shot at 1:00 - 5:00 a.m.

There's a standard of care provided to most anyone that arrives, minus any wait in line.
The biggest burden on the taxpayer is the Medicare-Medicaid fraud that's in the billions every years.
Over billing and unnecessary treatment.
Many of the fraudsters are foreign doctors that operate out of clinics.
Let's say the GS victim goes to the clinic for follow up treatment. After all medical treatments like meds, P-T and bandages, there is an allowable "psychological assessment" and another 12 weeks of psych trauma therapy - billed to Medicaid.
There's no limit. Ever wonder about that guy you wrote a Heard Shots-Felt Pain report for? He was previously shot 4 or 5 times in his 30 years of ghetto life? Wonder at what point he reaches his $1 mil lifetime insurance benefit like the taxpayers policy.
Hospitals make their nut on line item charges, like $113 per Tylenol pill and $189 bedpan.
(Had a feral shoplifter arrestee that was given an MRI for a headache. Oops, he moved let's do another.)

If we continue to elect folks like Rahm, Prickwinkle and KFXxxx the lawless gun shooting hoodlums will continue to shoot at their targets and anyone that stands in their way.

The courts have said if an officer places himself in a position which causes him to get hurt he can't use the risk he created to justify using deadly force (like jumping in front of a fleeing car). Wouldn't it be nice if gunshot victims who, while engaged in some sort of criminal activity, had to pay their own medical expenses? Fuck'em. ______
And do you think one slam at lawful gun owners is enough, nah, no f--king way: ....
>>> It's much the same story nationally with research on gun violence, including its financial costs, chilled by cuts in funding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The federal agency lost funding in 1996 in the wake of legislation pushed by the gun lobby that prohibited spending federal dollars on efforts to "advocate or promote gun control." ' <<<

Yeah, how outrageous, harrumph (/s). Whatever could be wrong with a Federal Agency, the CDC, using Tax Payer funds to issue propaganda pushing for more, and draconian, Federal Restrictions on a God given Right as protected by the US Constitution in the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights.

FYI, as I recall the CDC already had hospitals lined up -- Northwestern Memorial Hospital was one -- ready to declare 'gun violence' a Public Health Hazard and the CDC would take control of firearms under Heath Regulations -- being regulations the CDC would bypass Congress!

The costs Stroger Trauma Unit are staggering. Your numbers don't begin to capture the expense of treatment. Most discuss injuries as life threatening or non-life threatening. The reality is that so many of the injuries that we receive are catastrophic and include; paralysis, major extremity amputations, multiple organ failures, blindness and brain damage. Often times, shooting victims come to us multiple times and still carry bullets from previous shootings that we could not remove. Rarely are they cooperative and there is never a thought of billing them for the deep, six figure medical bills that arise. When you factor in follow-up medical treatment, physical therapy and prescription drugs, a single gang member frequently cost the tax-payers between $250,000 and $650,000 per visit. If they have a major permanent disability, such as paralysis, amputation, kidney function loss or similar level, the cost is exponentially higher. Multiply that by all of the penetrating traumatic injuries (gun shot wounds and knife wounds) and recognizing that virtually none of the victims have medical insurance and you begin to appreciate the costs.

If we are lucky, the charges get paid by Medicaid or Medicare, which means us. If we are sort of lucky, the charges that don't get paid by government will get paid by the other poor schmucks that use the hospital, like the middle class family with a kid with a 103F fever on Sunday night. Hospital charges are 90% horsesh*t. There is little relationship between the cost of service and the billing cost. If the billed amount is $157,000, the hospital will be lucky to collect $10,000. An insurance company would eviscerate the bill with negotiated rates at a fraction of the billed amount. If a person self-pays, the hospital will accept a fraction of the billed amount because they know that working people would file for bankruptcy before paying hyper-inflated bills.

In the past, the hospital would write off the costs as "charity". Now they expect people to have Obamacare so the government will pay. That's why the University of Chicago is finally building a trauma center - because they now expect to get paid by the government.

It is a fiction that these people deserve this and are worth this, but fiction is easy to create. It's as if the real world were no different from a movie or television show - these vast amounts of money are the cost of production.

It's a dirty little secret, actually they don't care if people know, that they don't even bill these shitheads who get shot in the hood. I once asked Lil Jerry from Chicago and Ridgeway, after the fifth time I came on to the scene of him being shot if he ever paid for any of the medical attention he received from county. And he said hell no, he never once even got sent a bill. And yes, it is us paying their way. Another reason why Illinois is the worst run state in the US. Too much pandering to the savages.

Someone throws water at me while I am driving, I keep driving. Period. You step out the vehicle it escalates. Now if that person rams my car, I call 911. But to have the situation escalate and then you unload a clip? Wow and you say she should get a pass? WTF man.

+++++

Not arguing the merits of the case but one round is different than emptying a "clip" into someone. Hint, it's a magazine, high speed. A clip holds a line of ammo that is inserted into a magazine, usually a rifle, or into an internal box magazine like a WW2 M-1. I'd like to think I wouldn't fight someone for hitting me with a water bottle or any object for that matter but people act with zero respect for others these days. That's just something I wouldn't do. Not saying it's right to shoot someone either. I'm definitely far more passive and unlikely to fight being a cop, on or off duty, than if I was just a normal citizen. Anyways, this is a fucked up case.

Can anybody confirm that?

Yes, this is bad. How about this; a Chicago healthcare company providing medicare coverage is currently treating a baby for drug addiction after she was brought into this world by an addict. The bill so far (and it's not anywhere done) is already $2 MILLION! And WE are paying for it. Add this to the many other kids like this, along with the thousands shot every year, it's no wonder the state and city has no money.

I remember that when I had to handle a crash etc... and went to cook county triage, they had signs on the wall with the bill for services for treatment at the hospital. I had to laugh at the prices and wondered if they actually sent out a bill to anyone? Are those notices still posted there? Maybe a state law to post?

Can heyjackass put on his front page the running cost of each shooting and homicide. Including the cost percentage based on race, gender, and location. They might just show a pattern of who is costing the tax payers the most money. Your democrat politicians who divert it. That is why they never talk about it, they know its real cost and damage to the tax payers, but it will also be political suicide. So as they took their oath, they are truly not doing it to the best of their ability. They just want votes so they hide it and blame it on someone else.

It's an interesting problem. Obviously most of the ones being shot are gang bangers, but occasionally a tax payer gets hit. Think about that: come into the city for a cheeseburger, end up with a gunshot wound and a $150k bill. Wish I still had my insurance. That got taken away under "you can keep your plan, you can keep your doctor" Obawacare. Apparently the deductible was too high. So now instead of a $10k deductible, it's an infinite deductible. And whose fault is that? (hint: my total tax bill could pay for THREE insurance policies...time to move to 1% Indiana and pay into THAT insurance pool?)

I know the hood is massively underfunded due to no one there working or paying taxes, but still, they get funds from elsewhere to stay afloat. I say, a gangbanger shoots someone and they incur medical expense, those expenses should come out of the gangbanger's neighborhood community chest. You don't like your community chest being raided? Stop raising and tolerating gangbangers.

"It's gibsemedat, now, cuz I needs dis"

But hey, I thought Obamacare was gonna fix all these problems with healthcare and stuff?
Sup Wit Dat?

And to the "water bottle" folks upthread.... you sound like the fools who say cars aren't weapons. First, a bottle thrown at you may bee filled with dry ice and water, exploding when it hits you, it might be filled with drano and aluminum foil, heck it cold be filled with gasoline or HIV infected bodily fluids. So yeah, when thrown at you in malice it IS a weapon and it IS an attack worthy of self defense.

It is no different than throwing a rock.
Don't want to get shot for throwing a water bottle filled with who knows what?
Then don't throw it at someone. Pretty simple concept eh?
SO enough with this "escalation" CRAP OK? You see, exercising self defense is not Escalation, indeed it is an actually attempt to DEESCALATE by eliminating the threat and bring the CHI back to peaceful balance.

Many do not know that the State has what is called CLAWBACK authority over medicaid recipients. More don't understand that Obamacare hands that same authority to the Feds, and as part of Medicaid expansion directly. The armtwisting of the states to join in the CLAWBACK in order to continue to get medicaid monies is going to see these folks FINALLY having to pay - when grandma dies, her HOUSE is going to get a LIEN, and with no way to pay, four generations will be out of the house where they live and had Section 8 pay grandma a portion of their "rent".

This is one reason Dems are getting so NERVOUS about wanting to "FIX" Obamacare. The good stuff was frontloaded and the ugly truth sent to the back of the bus. Well, now is when those back bus things begin to happen. What are the gibsmedats gonna do when granny's house is taken by government and sold, and they find out it is democrats RESPONSIBLE, their beloved Obama himself who led the way?

Get your popcorn.

Yep, and at many such facilities many of those hired would not pass a background check.

But, I do have to say there are also many good staff members that try hard to do their job, but like in public employee jobs those people get little recognition.

Ahead of the 3:15 p.m. statement, Trump will meet with “victims of ObamaCare.”
