Fake Uber/Lyft Sex Assaults

We haven't seen a Community Alert - why would we? Some connected relative is a big deal with one of those companies - no bad news shall be published that might affect the bottom line.
  • SCC, could you start to spread the word. There have been a series of sex assaults on female Uber/Lyft users who aren't checking the plate and type of car that picks them up. Usually happens after the bars close and have been particularly violent.
If you know someone who uses these services, make sure they are aware and take the appropriate precautions.

Require them to put lights on the roof, numbers on the back and sides and paint a uniform color. Official plates and a placard showing the drivers picture... that might help. DO police background checks on the drivers.......

Nevermind, now it's a cab....

How about axing the driver to confirm the destination? Axing the driver his name? Calling a cab? Stupid is as stupid does

Uber does not check fingerprints in their "background" check. Remember, the alderman were going to make it a requirement , then Uber threatened to stay out of Chicago so the alderman backed off.

I had a case where the Uber driver used his brothers name because he had a DUI ...

I was always told "never get in a car with strangers." Now, we pay to get in a car with strangers....

Something scary about getting into a strangers car. As a female I would not do it. At least not without having my gun on me.

Didn't your parents tell you not to get into a car with strangers?

DECOYS?? Ha! HA! Chicago does not have enough personnel to man the TAX PAYING Districts, so where do you think that CPD will get the man power to run a Decoy! Besides Rahm's Brother told him NO!! Think of MY PROFITS!!

I've used Uber many, many times to drop off and pickup my jalopy car when it was in the shop, downtown and some areas not easily accessible by CTA especially when it's raining/snowing.
In the past few years Uber's has been going down the drain.
Lots and lots of foreigners from the Middle East, although most seemed friendly enough and drove quite safely.
Had some shady characters show up and black drivers with pimped rides that look like they're targets for drive-bys.
Since I don't stay out after 2am and rely on a Uber for a drunken ride home I had no problems.

This is another Rahm Emanuel Fail and Democrat inspired money scheme.
They must contribute heavily to DNC-PAC's (in cash too) as opposed to Taxi Associations.

Although much is controlled by phone App, if one doesn't know better, the shady operator can easily scam anyone needing a ride at 2 a.m. I wonder if that's how the pervert kidnapped the visiting U of IL Chinese student last month.
No regulation whatsoever and like most Sanctuary drivers, they don't carry enough or pay insurance premiums on shitbox cars, just slap a xerox copy of a "U" in your windshield and who's going to challenge them?
Rely on a phone App for security? At least a regular taxi had a number and a picture visible.

Under ShortShanks, the Russians were buying up the taxi medallion market 20 yrs ago costing $300k for just one... now they are just about worthless. Now that Uber/Lyft is here, there's no gettting back to the real Checker -Yellow.
And with Rude Shares raising their rates, there will be even less revenue for the city.
Thank your Democrat Disease for that.

Uber is very safe, it's just scumbags taking advantage of naive, drunk, idiots. If you hand your keys off to any idiot in front of a fine dining restaurant, you don't blame valet companies.

And if you are parked or stopped at a light near a bar make sure your doors are locked...I have had several women try to get into my car because "it looked like an uber". Idiots getting into random cars and then wondering why things go south.

The thing is that this isn't the fault of Uber/Lyft. Those companies provide apps that rides are scheduled from. They tell the rider what the license plate of the vehicle is, and I believe give a pic of the driver too.

So if someone's dumb enough to get into a car with a "Uber" sticker on it that doesn't match the license/pic - that's on them.

Criminals are simply taking advantage of a situation - as they're want to do. It's vastly easier to impersonate an Uber because they don't have to fake a "taxi" light on top, special plates, medallion, etc. And I've had girlfriends who were accosted by "real" taxi cab drivers back in the day.

Best advice besides looking at the pic/license plate - get a CCL, carry a firearm. Use it to dispatch a criminal when necessary.

This happens when people drink too much. I used to work in Wrigley villa and Omg how many time did I see women knocking on windows trying to get in, I once happened to be driving on Clark street and this woman jumped inside car and passed out.

Mayor Murder;s brother is a major investor in UBER, The lil 9.5 twerp has almost killed all the legit cab companies in the city by over regulations which do not apply to Uber/Lyft. Again he has put his own interests above the safety of the citizens of this once great town.

Lyft driver here. How often and where? I try to monitor the appropriate blogs for this kind of info, like this one and the ones linked from here. I'm not surprised that people get in without checking, based on experience. I give safety lectures all the time to my riders...

Also, Blue Lives Matter, all day every day. Be safe, officers.

Can you use the squad for Uber? Be a nice way to pick up some extra dough and we're on the street anyway. ♠️

For a while I had a job sitting in my car watching a construction site overnight.

You would not believe the amount of young single females leaving the bar that would walk up, tug on my back door trying to open it and get in. Then after I wouldn't open it they would come to the front door and ask me if I was their Uber.
They were seriously trying to get in without even checking.

I had always thought there was always potential for bad things to happen as people get careless. I hope this community alert makes people think twice and start verifying the car and plates they are getting into.

It's not hard to print out a big uber logo and tape it to your window. Be smart, and thanks Lyft driver for the post.

They send you the driver's info, the plate and the make and color of the car before your ride arrives.
All you have to do is be functional enough to compare the info to the car parked in front of you.

These Uber/Lyft drivers drive like complete @ssholes. I give more respect and leniency to the legit cab drivers who know the "unofficial rules".
