The Return of ShotSpotter?
A year ago, this editorial board noted that Mayor Brandon Johnson was talking from both sides of his mouth when he pulled the cord on ShotSpotter when its nearly $50 million contract ended, only to plug the gunfire-detection system back in temporarily until the Democratic National Convention wrapped up.
“Only in Johnson’s City Hall does this make sense,” we said of the mayor’s vacillating position at the time. The system was shut down for good last September.
Now Chicagoans are learning of the very real possibility that ShotSpotter or similar surveillance technology could return. And the 180-degree turn back toward gunshot detection — a full 360-degree circle, if ShotSpotter comes back — could have been avoided if the mayor had simply listened to the right people.
In this case, the right people were Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling and City Council members who were proponents of the technology; University of Chicago researchers who found that ShotSpotter likely saved dozens of lives every year; and everyday people in neighborhoods plagued by gun violence, who felt the technology helped keep their communities safer.
This was an unforced error on the part of Conehead. While we weren't (and aren't) super huge fans of ShotSpotter - we regularly derided it as The World's Most Expensive Shell Casing Locator - the movement toward a more technology driven department cannot be denied. It worked as advertised and as the CWB blog has been pointing out for months now, would have assisted in locating many persons shot/killed in neighborhoods where no one even bothers to call 9-1-1 when gunfire erupts.
Plus, as CPD steals every idea NYPD has, we would note the Big Apple just renewed their contract with ShotSpotter:
SSTI stock climbed 13% on the news, so all the aldercreatures just missed a chance to make some decent money. This time around, you can be sure they'll be buying all the stock they can prior to approving the Contract.

Meetings are taking place trying to bring it back but under a different name. Too many people just want to make easy money off this program. I also think it’s not worth the money as it’s, like you said, an extremely expensive shell casing locater.
Johnson is a pigheaded fool who needs to learn how to listen before he speaks.
But then he is a product of the CTU and Cook County Democrat party.
He is the curse of the Democrats and an example of voters being suckered.
“It’s da Chicawga way”
“That’s what politicians do” (Waste money and lives).
now the hospitals gotta bring in some more doctors and nurses to fix those shooting victims and then bill the taxpayers
yep, couldn't leave a good thing alone, now they will be saving the savages, sloooowwww rolllll maybe that will get them anyway
What a maroon!
Of course it will be back but, run by a different company that has lined the mayors pocket. It wasn't the tech that he despised it ws that shot spotter didn't pay him

Wait, what? And I just bought stock in extra wide envelops and viagra...
Here’s the issue everyone had with shotspotter summed up into two points - jealousy and annoyance.
Jealousy because it’s the most visible level of clout for those at the district level. They don’t have quite enough clout to leave the watch, but just enough to avoid working a beat call. So you walk by the SDSC room everyday and there’s the two officers looking comfortable and avoiding any responsibility.
Annoyance because when those in the SDSC room do anything, whether it’s calling out shotspotter or on viewing supposed criminal activity on a POD camera, it’s more work for someone else. And we’ve seen that showing up quickly to shots fired can lead to Adam Toledo type of outcomes.
So whatever you read in this thread, it comes down to those two points
Wasn't the Shotspotter declared racist and a lot of money for microphones by our cementhead mayor.
How much research money did the U of C inteliligencia receive from government grants to conduct this study? They do all the advanced thinking with super duper compruters while taxpayers foot the bill.
Follow the money. Start with the public money funded academic research, lobbying efforts with public re-education campaigns, distribution schemes of plain brown paper bags of unmarked bills cash transfer payments and its greased skids implementation with no-bid connected contracts for costly installation and maintenance contracts.
Bring back ShotSpotter Incorporated and bring back full employment to the SDSC room with qualified 9161 CPD AC/DC identified DEI compliant qualified sworn personnel.
In January 2013, President Barack Obama said, “If there’s even one thing we can do to reduce this [gun] violence, if there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try.” A month later he tweeted, “If we save even one life from gun violence, it’s worth it.” His Vice President, Joe Biden, backed up Obama, saying, “As the President said, if your actions result in only saving one life, they’re worth taking.”
Politicians use such lines because they stir emotions. An argument intended to manipulate can stand on emotion. But an argument intended to persuade must stand on fact and reason. And politicians typically argue from emotion when facts and reason don’t cooperate.
How many new police would that money put on the streets?
Another bid rigged crooked contract about to be signed….poor taxpayers.
The city council cannot buy stock in shot spider before the city contract. That would be illegal. just ask Nancy Pelosi.
Why waste money on ShotSpotter? Just let Streets and Sanitation pick up the bodies during their regular rounds.
Now that the money is right ( inhis pocket), it will come back.
A waste of money. Didn't need it in the past, so why now?
This thing is a HUGE waste of money. Put the 15 million toward our pensions, or hiring new officers. We don’t need this. Super expensive casing locator.
Leaving it on the shelf produces better results on the streets chalkie gettin lots of overtime
Off topic how are the officers hurt in the bad crash at North / Cicero last night 4561 Eddie
Let the all the useless hood rats along with their ghetto ass drama drop like bugs.
There is no such thing as "gun violence" - it's simply violence. "Gun violence" is a libtarted term used to demonize guns. You never hear them say "knife violence", "baseball bat vilence" or "hands and feet violence".
More like brittany spears compliant.
A dead body is cheaper than absorbing the hospital costs of some shithead who had it coming.
Unrelated but what’s up with this court Sgt at 26 and Cal? Guy is a major hard ass trying to jam coppers up left and right, heard he got multiple CRs pulled on him for harassment, smh…why are we making things harder for each other, we have enough to worry about
“They had an agenda to take down a couple prosecutors,” he said of the prosecution. “Had this experimental prosecution been successful, this would have opened up another revenue stream for the exoneration movement, which has run rampantly out of control in this county. It would have put a target on the back of every prosecutor in this state and in this country.”
Really? The new recruits... That brain trust is better than... I can't even finish this. Ur dumb.
Jamming people up? For what dressing like a retard at court? That’s literally his job is to make sure you don’t look fucked up at court and a mouth breather like you claims he harassing people. You sound like a shit head.
A miserable court Sgt. at 26th and Calif? Not exactly news. Long retired here and the court Sgts.at 26th St. were always miserable. Actually it was a qualification for that job.
He must be merit - like many other strokes nad power trippers. Probably a Homan Square boy who forgot what patrol is
It was a 2561 car. Heard both have left the hospital
No, though you are correct about the clouted house mice. The real problem is that the program is an expensive boondoggle where the return on the money isn't worth the cost. Spending millions to get the police there possibly a bit earlier to save what is mostly gangbangers isn't a sound return on investment. The "good" victims found by the program and the criminal convictions that came from the program aren't worth it.
