Update please

We haven't heard about Commander Murphy lately. We'd always worry when someone drops off of the radar like he seems to have, especially following a horrible accident. If someone could post an update on his condition or even a place to send cards/flowers, we are sure many readers would appreciate it, and you can update in the "Open Threads" comments that appear every so often.

Joe Murphy is not doing well following his single vehicle accident.

He is paralyzed from the upper chest down. And is hospitalized.

He waited and dreamed for that
gold commander's badge and had
it 5 days when the accident
occurred.

Like him or not... very sad.

Its a lesson to all of us to be content with the things we have and to allow others to enjoy the things they have. He could have stayed retired and enjoyed his family and his vacation home in Michigan but he had to have that command spot. I'll bet not a day goes by now that he doesn't wish he had never come back. Best of luck to him and may we long remember him.

Flowers and Cards can be sent to the CPD Headquarters. They have little kiss ass insiders that make deliveries to him when ever anything comes in.

Hmmmmmmm GOLD BADGE or Handicapped...... Which one is for me? Yes, well worth coming back from retirement and giving up a nice well paid job at Cook County Sheriff's.

Some need a gold badge to feel important. I wouldn't take a gold badge if they handed it to me.

I don't need to have my most important issue of the day being... which parking spot is mine at headquarters... who has a closer one and I need the best looking exempt car.

They fight like dogs over little crap as important issues are non-existant.

Word is he fell asleep at the wheel after being up long hours with the dept. and then tried driving to Michigan.

Wow I remember when you never saw an exempt member on this job. Ghost payrolling at best. You usually never even saw the watch commander...his door was closed and if he was in there he was pouring himself another alcoholic beverage.

Now they pimp the gold badge guys like they are a--holes and yell at them about crime!

Too funny!

Typical asshole cop bullshit. If you can't say something mean, don't say anything at all. I don't even like Murphy, but there are very few peoplr I'd wish this on.

Mr. Moderator,
A request here. Tear down the post of those jackoffs who would make light of a guy handicapped in a traffic accident.

It is one thing to rip a guy when he he down it is another to rip a guy who is a member of the department. It's even more scary to think these guys are coming to your house when ya call 911 or are on patrol in the neighborhood.

It was his decision to come back for something he desired very much. The posters who hit Murphy probably don't deserve more than getting a stool at the tavern after their shift.

Look I didn't know the guy, but he was a worker. I'll find the address where cards can be sent.

Joe Murphy is a stand-up guy. When you look at the pimps like Cynthia White and Mike Shields, it makes you admire what a policeman Joe Murphy is. If that was his thing, to come back for the gold star, that's his decision. To think anyone is less a man because he came back for the gold star is an ass!! He needs your support & prayers, not your bashing. May God bless him & give him a full recovery.

I am acquainted with Joe Murphy. I regard him as a gentleman and one hell of a homicide detective. I pray he has a full recovery.

The Rehabilitation Institute of CHICAGO is widely rated as the very best on the planet in that medical speciality.

God bless Joe Murphy.

I second that motion- our thoughts are with Joe Murphy and his family. Just hang in there and keep the faith during this difficult time. I just saw a report the last few weeks on the national news regarding a new procedure that regrows veins & arteries to damaged hearts via stem cell injection therapy. Can nerve repair be far off? Sounds like it's right around the corner! Our prayers are with you and your loved ones sir. Any wagon guys making a run to 26th & Cal should stop by the Rehab institute if possible and cheer the man up! (or any copper in the area for any reason!)

Not sure if its P.C. to call a man paralyzed a "stand-up guy"

Maybe come up with a different compliment.

He & his family deserve our prayers & best wishes! Whatever you may think of him he came back to this job, gave up more $ by doing so, why because working as a Chicago Policeman is what made him happy.

God Bless him & his family!

I never knew the guy and I am sure he is a good copper, I don't think its nice to bash someoen who is injured so badly, but it is our right to speak. Left is best would like only smily happy things, maybe we all would but it wont happen.

Did people forget all the coppers Murphy helped in roundtable situations. People who are critical of him during his time of dispair should be ashamed of themselves.

You're right. More officers were helped in the Roundtable by Murphy than any other officer on the job.

You say that Joe Murphy has helped more people in the round table then anyone on the job? Obviously you never met John Farrell from Area One. A great boss who should have been promoted to exempt not to mention captain.
