Lots of posts

We posted a good 5 or 6 threads in the past 14 hours, so we're going to take it easy Thursday morning. Be sure you scroll down through the posts - we've covered department, local and national politics, science, FOP grievances, and Ira's. Quite the spectrum, eh?

We'll be back Thursday afternoon, so check in a couple of times. We made a run at 900 the other day and are regularly surpassing 700 hits daily. Anything that doesn't fit into the above categories can be put in this open thread.

PANHANDLERS SUE COPS FOR ALLEGED HARASSMENT

Published September 22, 2005

CHICAGO -- Lawyers for four homeless panhandlers who solicit money near downtown bridges filed a civil rights lawsuit in U.S. District Court Wednesday claiming that Chicago police and the city violated their free-speech rights by arresting them on several occasions.

The suit filed by self-described panhandlers James Hudson, 56, George Gardner, 52, Tyron Smith, 35, and James Burton 26, names the city and 18 Chicago police officers who have either arrested or issued fines to the men.

The suit alleges police enforcing city ordinances that prohibit people or vehicles from congregating and or blocking bridges have harassed and singled out the men. The suit also alleges that the ordinances are unconstitutional and violate their freedom of speech and 14th Amendment rights.

In the lawsuit, the men state that police have repeatedly arrested them as they attempted to panhandle near Adams Street and Wacker Drive, the Madison Street Bridge and the Monroe Street Bridge.

Jennifer Hoyle, a spokeswoman for the city Law Department, said officials had not had a chance to review the lawsuit and could not comment.

INFO ON REV. JESSES JACKSON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Court Rules Jesse Jackson Must Face Civil Trial for

Assault and Civil Rights Violations

Judicial Watch represents Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson in claims against Jackson

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes corruption, today announced that on January 17, 2006, Jesse Lee Peterson, et al., v. Jesse Jackson, et al. (BC 266505) will go to trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court after a ruling last week by Judge George H. Wu. Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit against Jackson, his son Jonathan, and others on behalf of Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, who was the victim of a physical and verbal assault at an event hosted by Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. in December 2001. Rev. Peterson is an ordained minister, who has dedicated his life to working with underprivileged black youth and men in our society.

The Jacksons and the Rainbow/PUSH coalition, who had sought to have the case dismissed, will now face multiple civil charges, including: Assault, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress and a California Civil Rights Claim. Jonathan Jackson also will face the additional charges of Battery and False Imprisonment.

Judicial Watch’s lawsuit stems from a public meeting held in Los Angeles, California on December 10, 2001 to discuss participation in Toyota’s “21st Century Diversity Strategy,” which had been announced after Jackson and Rainbow/PUSH threatened to boycott Toyota. After remarks from Jackson and Toyota representative Irving Miller, the meeting was opened up to questions from the audience. Rev. Peterson asked Miller if black Republicans and conservative groups like his organization, Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND), would have to go through Rev. Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH in order to participate in the Toyota program.

Jackson told the crowd, “And the issue, for the record…is not conservative or liberal. The issue is certain parasites trying to pick up fruit from trees they didn’t shake.” Rev. Peterson testified that after the “parasite” comment, the crowd became “more hostile….Some of the words I can’t even mention here.”

Within minutes following adjournment of the meeting, Jonathan Jackson struck Rev. Peterson and Rev. Peterson was physically threatened and verbally assaulted by both Jesse Jackson and Jonathan Jackson. Incited by Jackson’s earlier remarks, an angry crowd gathered, cursing, shoving and encircling Rev. Peterson and one of his associates. “I feared for my life,” said Peterson.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said, “Jesse Jackson attempted to use every legal trick at his disposal to have this case dismissed, and he failed. This trial is a major step in holding Jackson accountable for his actions.”

“I’m pleased the court ruled in our favor,” said Reverend Peterson. “I am looking forward to taking my case to court and to forcing Jesse Jackson to answer for his actions.”

The recently promoted Capt's and Lt's are NOT being paid their respective salaries. These promotions MUST be reviewed and APPROVED by the FEDERAL MONITOR. I believe this will be the test of wether the FEDS will go after the Dept. for all these "MERIT/appointment " promotions.

I agree. The comedic value alone is worth more than the fine on these future tickets.

Just one thought...if the crossing guard/traffic managment authority/whatever people are issuing tickets to people working downtown (mayor daley's new source of income), who will be managing the traffic?

I hope someone gets a picture and sends it to Webster's: the new definition of "cluster-fuck".

and if I out of uniform refuse to stop when so beckoned by the uniformed civilian, what are they gonna do?

and if I out of uniform refuse to produce an ID when so requested by the uniformed civilian, what are they gonna do?

and if I out of uniform simply say that I have no ID when so requested by the uniformed civilian, what are they gonna do?

If this proposal ain't DOA, the former PO in charge of the OEMC should be retroactively fired from the CPD for stupidity. As if there aren't enough other reasons already.

OEMC Wunderboy Huberman will do what all of his predecessors did. Fall of his sword to save the mayor's hide. I just hope he doesn't fall on it face first with his mouth open.

There are plenty of good side jobs out there if you need one so get one and quit complaining. As far as housing suck asses, It did not take much clout to get there when I did just nerve, so get some.
