Note to Noelle Brennan

Maybe, as Federal Hiring Monitor, you ought to have a look at this. A Pass/Fail test for firefighters? And the "giant pool" of applicants will be "picked at random" for interviews and hiring? The city had better:
  • do the picks in a cinderblock room which will be completely empty and sealed with the lights on and a single window for you to view inside.
  • The names will be engraved on ping-pong balls and placed in a 55 gallon drum that rotates. A small monkey, specially trained for the task, shall enter the barrel, blindfolded, choose a ball and bring it to you and only you, passing it through a sealed airlock so as not to contaminate the pick.
Then, and only then, will we ever believe that the beginning process is truly random. Because as sure as god made little green apples, the sons (and sons of sons) of bosses, chiefs, captains and lieutenants will somehow score very well on the "interview" portion of the test and be pushed to the front of the hiring lists. This is the city after all, that created a police lieutenants exam that was passed by 100% of the test takers.

can the dept. refuse time due? i hear horror stories in 009. what is the advise when a w/c refuses time due and is there a real lawsuit pending on the matter?

Regarding the refusal to allow elective time off

The answer is that as it now stands ALL elective time off may be refused by a supervisor

The lawsuit is trying to change that

The apathy in the CPD concerning rigged promotions is beyond pathetic.

Rather than focusing on the theme of this thread, note the unrelated content of the last three posts.

SCC,
Sorry but the city has a lock on the trained monkey market. (Look at Fran Speilman of the Sun-Times).

(Theres a guy in the Coalition for Better Government that used to be with Ringling Brothers that has trained the monkeys to sniff out all the "qualified" candidates. They rolled ping pong balls in cocaine and had a coke head monkey sniff them out. Just ask anyone who's been promoted in the Water Department

So instead of pissing off a "few" people that don't score well onthe enterance test (for whatever reason) they are going to piss off everybody with pass-fail testing. Cortez seems to be a lot like Starks, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing...Putting him in charge of the fire department would be like putting a crossing guard supervisor in charge of CPD... What will they think of next...

Call it what you will when it comes to CHICAGO hiring. AFFIRMATIVE, WELL, MARGINAL , or MERIT it makes no difference...Call it a rose, but when you step in it the color, texture, and the smell never lie;
Chicago politics in its fecal best.

No, you do nothing motherfucker, the post was about hiring & promotion within the police & fire departments. I don't give a fuck what they do to Libby Scooter, or any of them. You are an attention whore. Reminds me of many years ago when you were in that Indian restaurant on Diversey; the one across from Yakzies. We had an over/under on how long you were going to sit in there. The time limit was 4 fucking hours and we gave up. You had the wagon parked across the street in a lot. You spent over 4 hours of your 3rd watch tour sitting in a restaurant. What a shithole 023 was. Post about politics all you want within the thread, just don't contribute on police work. You work in the biggest do-nothing, cock sucking district and you're still a dog by its standards.

IS C.F.D. still hiring those current listed candidates IF THEY ARE OVER 35 years old?

And- Anyone here CROSSED OVER to fire from Po-leece (or visa-versa?) We had TWO RECENT young guys go to FIRE from the `95 test- wonder how they feel about their decisions now???

Hey Shady,

A detective who retired from Area 4 last year (year before maybe?) joined the Fire Department. He was in his mid 50's and was the father of young triplets. Good detective though!

Young P/O from 6 (or 4) left our job for Fire Department last year, although he came from a family of firefighters.

Never heard of a firefighter coming here though.

Trotter's (CFD) response: what difference does it make if someone scores higher or lower on the test?
Doesn't that say it all concerning hiring/testing/evaluating candidates or City jobs (only in Chicago?) I mean, it would be easy to get angry about the lack of standards, but, look at it from another viewpoint....perhaps we should eliminate all academic scoring (letter grades, etc.; "hey, what's the difference between A and D anyway?). As far as professions, doctors, nurses, lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc., etc., why grade people and test them as to their knowledge, I mean, just let folks go to school and give them a certificate (assuming that anyone could operate on your cancer, advise you on critical legal matters, or decipher an almost undecipherable IRS statute). Didn't th CFD already give their female candidates a "smaller" axe to swing some years ago (the regular axe was too big and heavy); my suggestion: if you're in a fire, you'd better find a way to get out first......and that's no criticism of the courage of the firefighters who serve our city every day......

to elaborate: this city is led by a mayor that had a hell of a time passing the Ill bar exam (and there's some question about that; BUT, this city is leading all others in potted flower pots, indicted city officials, and downtown parks (over budget, but what the hell?). There has been significant discussion about the "dumbing down" of America, i.e., the lowering of standards in education, employment, hiring, promotion, etc., in order to achieve a "more diverse" result. Don't you just love it? I mean, results-based applications? Forget about the testing process, how does it look (race, gender, ethnicity) when it's its all done? Is America sacrificing excellence, intelligence, performance, and effort, on the altar of political correctness, as the politicians and corporate leaders bow to the gods of diversity?

I could not agree with you more. The USA was once the leader in many fields. Now we lack far behind in most every field. When it comes to public safety I think that the most qualified or highest scoring person should be hired/promoted, which ever the case maybe. When I call 911 and my house is on fired I don't care what race the person is that comes as long as they can put out the fire quickly and do what needs to be done. When are people going to understand that? This isn't a fast food job. This is a job that lives are on the line. To push this topic a little further; specialized units should not consist of phone calls. When the police are in trouble who do they call? I.E. H.B.T. or S.O.R.T. I would like to see how many of those appointments were based on a phone call. Again when are people going to realized that a political hack may not be the best choice for some of these positions especially when the lives of our brothers are on the line?

We need to rehash a thread about manpower, something with exact numbers. This needs to be leaked to the media. I'm sure the taxpayers would love to know that our police force is down by about 25% but many districts like 8 and 006 are backlogged every day. This is obviously a way for the 5th. floor troll to save money after his shopping spree at the concrete and wrought iron depot. Plus they have these egg-head douche bags that have never been the street police (Huberman and friends) convinced that police work can be done w/less men and more technology. THIS IS AN OFFICER SAFETY ISSUE! This is more important than promotioins, the Sox, Carl Rove or the Girls of D.C.

LITB- I heard one of the guys who went 2 Fyre from Paradise was happy with it (and "HOW")- but the other guy I haven't heard about... "8.8."... anyone heard?

How many of YOU would jump if you could pass & try without any significant penalty?

AND- wasn't there a wild rumor a few years back about the city wanting to lump us Po-Po and the Byrn-outs into one category: PUBLIC SAFETY and cross train us? (or was it just some budget position title misunderstanding or knucklehead talking crap?)

WHY did old man Daley supposedly love Fire and despise us so?

Blue flu? Are you retarded, do you actually believe that you can protect your home as well as your friends and relatives. This city is a relatively safe place, because we all work together. Fellow coppers, call for back up for anything suspicious, or potentially dangerous, brother officers. Don't take ANY chances with your lives. Very bad stuff happens when its least expected. Don't fall into the " Hurry Up" syndrome, the bosses will love you if you handle a lot more calls, arrests, etc; but it won't do a damn bit of good to you if you, or some other officer gets killed, because you were hurrying up, not calling for back-up, assistance, etc; so the sorry assed bean counters at Headquarters can say they are doing more with less manpower due to their "brightideas". Take your time, size up the situation, call for help if needed, and if in doubt, don't risk life and limb for a dept. that doesn't back you up or care about your personal safety as much as they care about whats politically correct.

You should absolutely call for backup if necessary and you should never put yourself in a tactical disadvantage either by rushing or not asking for the assistance/equipment you need. However I think spending 2 or 3 hours on a simple paper job, or taking 30 minutes to get to a job is a bit much.... I don't think you have to rush to get to a job in under 30 minutes.

About ten or twelve years ago, the Sun-Times ran a series where readers could write in questions to be asked of famous persons.

The second in the series was Richie M. Daley and one question read, “How can the mayor get a 35% pay increase and the aldermen get a 30% increase while you are only offering the firefighters and police a 2 ½ % increase.”

Our mayor’s response, “I am the mayor of a great city, and the aldermen are the legislators of a great city. I am very proud of the salary I make. If this individual doesn’t like what we are offering he can quit. We have 40,000 signed up to take the next firefighters exam and he can be easily replaced. “

This is the mentality of the man who has gutted our benefits and resources to build himself monuments and hire his trucks and has put people like Cortez Trotter and Charles Williams in charge.
