Isn't it Interesting?
... that whenever there seems to be something resembling bad news on the mayor's doorstep, someone manages to dig up some dirt on the Department and use it to give politicians political cover?
- Bad news for the mayor - A Channel 2/Pam Zekman investigation reveals a massive EPA-type nightmare brewing below the surface of what used to be Meigs Field. Nine feet worth of contaminated soil on what the mayor hopes will be a nature park, wetlands, concert venue, etc, is turning into another albatross.
So what does the sun-times cover?
- Ex Partner of 'most corrupt' cop out of prison - Big story? Not really when you find out that Galligan was released to home confinement on 09 August 2005, over THREE AND A HALF MONTHS AGO! What could possibly be the point of bringing up old news like this? Anyone? Bueller?.

SORRY, NOT TO GET OFF THE SUBJECT...
There are a lot of Brand new 2005 Chevy Tahoes / marked units at 51st street.. were are those going? A NEW unit?
Those are SWATs. They've been using them for a few months now.
It was released on SCC approx. 3 months ago that Sheriff Sheahan was not going to run another term. Mark Donahue is rumored to be possible successor. Stay toned to SCC for more information.
Heaven help the Cook County guys....
James Maurer- NEW COOK CO. SHERIFF
Every district is going to get a Chevy Tahoe-told to me from A/1 motor maintenance.
With Sheehan leaving and if his hand picked boy Tom Dart does not get in there will be high unemployment in the 19th Ward.
You can't go too many blocks in the 19th Ward without seeing a sheriff's car parked infront of some hacks house.
I hear Stroger is pushing Jim Whigham to run for Sheriff.
If the mayor hadn't moved to Central Station, would he still have wanted to destroy Meigs Field? And if following Daniel Burnham's plan of an "open lakefront for all the people" is what was being done, why is McCormick Place on the lakefront? And if the city is touting McCormick Place as a convention center, why tear up an airport that helps bring in conventions?
Daley should pay the FAA fines out of his own kick.
I posted a few days ago about throwing a bone to Mark Brown.
I stated that he might investigate the City cover up of leaking gasoline tanks under the old stations in the CPD.
It's still on the cite. Northerly Island is nothing compared with that enormous coverup.
Again , where is the EPA ? Where is the OSHA? Whare's Pam when you need her?
If there is any competent news investigator out there looking for a lead, bring this topic up to the attention of the rank and file and you'll get the hot poop.
Otherwise the little prince wins another one.
Tahoes for our swat???
Why not aluminum lawn chairs? Isn't it what they really need? Something to wait on?
Is it true that the cost for the Tahoes was supplemented by the fact that the swat teams don't need ammo?
Just asking.
Sorry your application to SWAT got rejected.
Someday you'll find something to relieve you of the bitterness.
Great column by Mary "Blatant Racist" Mitchell today in the Sun-Times.
An eight minute response time wasn't fast enough, and it's all the evil police's fault that another sister got killed by her man.
Never mind that in the HOUR that he was allegedly screaming and beating her, no one in her apartment building bothered to dial 911.
I expect the City will return those Tahoes now and invest in teleportation devices for it's police force, so as to cut response time down to eight seconds!
Of course, then the ever biased, always anti-police Mitchell would complain that it only took the police SEVEN seconds to respond in a white neighborhood...
It would be outstanding to have someone who is the complete opposite of her have their own column. Could you imagine the outcry if a conservative, white male was allowed to openly write about all the things that he sees wrong in the BLACK community? Oh my......
Dear 10:30:49
Sorry I've been retired longer than
you've been on the job.
I'll bet your lawn chair is flat black in color or gun metal gray with an umbrella and a clip on radio holder.
hey comeon
leave the swat dude alone you might screw up his aim during his next scene .tears are salty
TAHOES?
Why not ESCALADES?
...with 20-inch SPINNER rims?
And a SALTY "soft clothes" spinner drivin' it? ;-)
(click above to see what I means)
to: double standards, 10:48..excellent post. I was also wondering if the Dept. will conduct an analysis of every domestic call we receive (let's say, over a year period), then total up and calculate the "average" response time. I'd bet that the average is a lot more than 8 minutes (and why, let the public know that, too). And maybe somebody needs to state the obvious: preventing someone from killing somebody else is not possible.
Bells...bells...bells...

I would imagine that the response times are higher in WHITE neighborhoods, since some of their police are sent to BLACK neighborhoods.

I heard a rumor that the City wont give the new SWAT team ammo to practice with. Is this true? You guys have to buy your own ammo? Also heard that they will not let you take out the M4's / Ar-15's to practice with.
Any truth to this>

Not to be on her side, but Mary Mitchell has a husband who is a white conservative. This by her own admission from one of her columns a while ago.
Remember, reporters write to sell papers and controversy sells.

Police ordered to write more tickets
Council seeks extra $1M a year in fine revenue
Colette Derworiz and Emma Poole
Calgary Herald
Tuesday, November 22, 2005
Calgary's top cop said he's not interested in turning the force into a money-maker, despite calls from city council to increase fine and other revenues within the service's budget.
Chief Jack Beaton said it's unlikely the service will be able to meet council's $3-million revenue expectation next year -- more than $1 million more than what was projected.
Aldermen approved the change in a 9-6 vote as they tried to find ways to cut millions from its 2006-08 budget, which calls for a 5.4 per cent tax increase next year.
Beaton was disappointed with council's expectation of the police service as a revenue generator.
"We don't want to write tickets for the sake of writing tickets," Beaton said late Monday. "We do traffic enforcement for one reason -- safety."
The police budget for 2006 is $187 million, with nearly $2.1 million in projected revenues. The amendment would add an extra $1 million next year.
Ald. Bob Hawkesworth, who proposed the change, said it will be a good incentive for drivers to obey the rules of the road.
"These are expenses people can avoid by driving within the speed limit," he said, noting it would bring additional revenues to one of the city's biggest departments while reducing property taxes.
Hawkesworth said it's a wise move if it makes the streets safer.
But Ald. Craig Burrows, who sits on the Calgary Police Commission, said it would be difficult for police to generate $1 million in extra revenue.

I don't car if Mary Mitchell is married to Rush Limbaugh. She still uses her column as the above poster stated. I too would love to see an opposing (truthful) opinion allowed to be written.
I heard they got one Tahoe for the elite SWAT team to ride in, one for their gear, and one to hold all of their hair care products. Any truth to this?
I think that previous poster is thinking about Laura Washington, who is married to a snowy haired Irish lookin' pro-Police white hubby (yeah she wrote about their different takes on a police related incident they had together a while back). Maybe they both are- who knows? It would seem to tend to dispel at least some of the weight of a "reverse rascism" charge hurled back at them- kinda-sorta-maybe. Land of Fruits`n' Nuts resident... Laura Washington kinda looks Picasso-like, something about her eyes look like you can see both at the same time from one side... dreadlocky hair in the past... she's in the Times occasionally, and either In These Times or The Chicago Reporter (both?) Be careful Town Hallers... those chameleon eyes might be watching YOU- be on your BEST Behavior! (ain't never seen M.M. in our neck o' the woods!) We have Pam Zekman too- although you almost NEVER see her... hey, shouldn't Chicago Media folk have a residency rule too- you cover it/us- you live here too!
You all some haters. We should all go out stepping together.
i heard that in order to drive tahoe you must have hair frosted blonde. also i heard the tahoes were equipped with extra vanity mirrors.
I saw a Marine unit driving a brand new Tahoe today through 012. Nice looking vehicle. Nice looking broad driving too...
And Mary Mitchell has made many mentions of her thug son and how hard it is to raise him as a single, black mother.
Compared to Mary Mitchell, Laura Washington IS Rush Limbaugh!!!

An application? That's how you get on the SWAT Team? It's all legit? Great, I'm soooo glad this dept is turning around.
tahoes are suppose to be for district w/c and field lt.'s
It's time to clean up patronage and corruption in the Office of the Cook Co. Sheriff. The taxpayers need someone whose integrity is above reproach.
LEROY MARTIN FOR SHERIFF!
Surely you jest. Talk about the fox guarding the hen house...
Keep the Sheriff and clout in the 19th ward. Amen.
Martin, Whigham, Maurer, etc., for sheriff? Are you kidding? The office is just one patronage cesspool, and won't ever change unless Stroger and his group are eliminated; and Stroger and his cronies won't leave unless and until Daley is gone.....
I remember Sheriff Sheahan when was a YO Area 1' he couldnt find an elephant in the circus.

Barfy says
Sheehan was not a Youth Officer, he was a PO in area two school patrol. He worked the car around Morgan Park High School.
He took a leave to run for alderman and after he won he had to come back on the job until he was sworn in so he could feed his family.
He may have been a school officer in Mogan Park at one time, but he was a YO (appointed of course) He never passed a promotional exam in his life, but he's the sheriff. Now that's merit!
Area two Y.O.
and there was no test then
and he has done a good job at CC
and if you don't know him why talk BS
When now Sgt. Tony Molineaux got shot on 87TH. St. by an angry citizen, police respond, and in true 1971 CPD form they proceed to blast the hell out of the house that the shooter is cowering in. one of those police is Mike Sheahan. When the assault was made upon the house, Mike was one of the first coppers to help to gain entry. Another 19 TH. ward resident removed the shooters head with a 12 guage. case closed.
Terry Lannigan Mikes friend and partner was seriously wounded line of duty, they made have been youth guys, but they did not hide out. They went to everything, thats the way it was then, it was the pre-crybaby era.
Mike is from a police family, he would do anything to help a cop, yes he made some bad choices at the command level, but thats politics.
Mark Donhue? I don't think so.
s an aside, when the shootout was going on, and it was a lot of shooting in both directions, a traffic car pulled up right in front of the shooters house, the traffic guy emptied his gun at the house.....and then drove away, serenaded by the cheers of other responding units. Try doing that today. I only wish they were around for Joe Airheardt
