And Now We Take a Break

...from yanking Lefty's and Shady's chains to turn to local issues. Has everyone received this month's FOP newsletter? BEFORE everyone runs to the comments section to write stuff like "FOP Sucks" and "Mark hasn't changed the message in 213 days" or similar such nonsense, go read the newsletter. Here's the link. A few items of interest:
  1. The Vice President's Report - What Happened to the 10-Hour Days? on page 2. We haven't covered this topic yet as we didn't know much about it. We haven't served in a unit that ran it. From what we heard, it worked out ok and people liked it. Does anyone have any information from the ground? Did it live up to the hype? Why it was cancelled?
  2. The Vice President's Report - Out of District Details. Well well well, could we have one of the Vice Presidents reading this board and seeing the pissed off coppers who are complaining about their home beats being unprotected in spite of the rather large tax burden born by these officers? We'd need to see more proof before we assumed a Vice President of the organization (that has done it's very best to ignore our existence and even denied that they had anything to do with us) was actually READING our website. Hmmm.
  3. The Vice President's Report - The Manpower Shortage. Well, knock us down with a feather - is this our proof? Two items we've been covering on our website for months suddenly appear in the FOP newsletter? Hi Bill! Hi Frank! Hi Greg! Tell Mark we said "hi" and not to be such a stranger.
Anyway, the main reason we point this out is not to tease the FOP Vice President(s) reading this website (well, not entirely), but rather to point out how much better it is to have an active/reactive message board that can gather information instantly and get it to coppers just as fast. The hotline is useful only if updated constantly. The website "Current Updates" page is only good for announcing news releases. We think the FOP needs some kind of anonymous mailbox (voice, email, whatever) where coppers can drop off info on things like illegal details and manpower issues and such where they can't be retaliated against. Yes, they'll have to filter out crap like the "Rufo fan club" threads and such, but it doesn't have to be public like we are. And all we ask in return is credit to the SCC website with being the genesis of the idea. Opinions?

FOP does not care about its members.... Right now the FOP members MARK and Co. are planning on parting their balls off at the District Christmas parties. Maybe we will see some good photos of them partying!!!! It's our union dues that paid for them to attend the party & the kicker is that everyone will kiss their ass's at the party.

Well when I first got on the job during the summer almost every day two P.O's were sent out of the district and sent to either a Cubs game or a Sox game. Now that was a detail and it was offered based on seniority or if no takers (usually) you were selected by reverse seniority.
Now if the department started sending you to other districts to work without asking for voluteers first and then picking by reverse seniority if no takers that would make it a contract violation "illegal", however the department is getting away with it because these cars are sent to places like 11 and are not there for the entire tour. Thus you are right its not "illegal" but a detail definately can become "illegal".

Maybe the FOP should focus on the ways City Hall is planning to drop pensions for city workers!!

I am a unit rep. I am not a member of the Citywide Team. In the last few elections my vote has been split amongst many candidates from various teams. Here is a sad fact for you (12:26 post)Most guys on the job are apathetic concerning our bargining unit (not a union). As I have mentioned before only 100 or so members below the rank of D3 qualify to run for any office in the FOP. Why is that? A member must attend at least half the general meetings a year to qualify as a candidate. Only a hundred or so do. I believe we are lucky enough to have about 30% respond to elections. So sir if you want to throw questions and or statements at Mark or any of the other VP's go to a meeting and put it out there. You know if you go to only 5 in a year you would qualify to run for the board. But the downside is you couldnt remain anonymous.
p.s. Im anonymous because I'm not talking shit about people. And Im certin you havent been to a meeting because I go to all of them and I havent heard anyone bitch about FOP going to unit Christmas parties.

Actually at the last general meeting the Lodge did mention that the city wants to negotiate matters regarding our pension in future contract negotiations. Funny thing is we have asked them to in the past and they would refuse. Go figure

This is way off topic but does anyone know the reasoning the city has on not paying out benefits for spouses unless your married for 1 year? I bring this up because John Hurley’s new wife (only married 4 months when he died tragically) is being denied any benefits from the city. Benefits I might add he contributed to in his pay check monthly. I don't know her personally but this is what they are saying at roll call. Is this a rumor or truth.

FOP has never done anything worthwhile for the dues paying members, unless you had clout. They work the same way the city does. Dineen sold us out, Nolan sold us out, and now Donohugh is selling us out. I say we sell them out. Time for a new union, a real union, not a fraternal group.

The FOP contract is in fact a city ordinance, voted upon by the aldermen and approved by the mayor. The contract therefore has the rule of law behind it and takes precedence over Rules and Regulations and General Orders. Therefore a violation of the contract is a violation of law and the term “illegal” can be applied.

But, as they say on the Westside, it’s only illegal if you get caught.

And the first think Markie boy will say is... your out of order.

You guys at FOP suck. Your useless and only react if you absolutely have to. You should be on the citys ass like white on rice. But you always coward down as to not upset King richard. If you guys want to impress us, start causing King richard some headaches. If this pension thing is true, let alone what the FOP has done to our medical benefits Id run and hide if I were you guys.

Do you know the first of the year there is a $100.00 deductible if you go to the emergency room and don't get addmitted to the hospital because of the visit. Thanks Marky, how many people are going to die because they will not go to the ER because of the deductible.

More lost because of Marky and the FOP

Go over to SCC's links (click on the FOP link), click on the "Contact Us" button, and click on who on the board you'd like to communicate with. It's called e-mail. Get into the 20th Century.

If you're worried about anonymity, talk to a twelve year old about how to do it. THey all know.

BTW, you don't get to take credit for inventing e-mail, SCC.

If there is a particular point that you feel very adamant about changing in the fop contract and you feel that you are not being heard by the current admin in the lodge...
Simply organize your district into one voice and spread the voting populace into other districts. Let your disciples spread the word , organize and next election you can become president.

Otherwise, shut up you sychopant whining bar bitch. You can't even get three coppers to agree on DOGs let alone politics. You mush.

Mark is doing a fine job and he should get credit for it. Political hack??? Yes, but it's his position and he earned it. You try it.
What ???

It's easier to whine and cry and be disruptive isn't it? You can't even stay on topic in a blog, or contribute to a thread without insulting the 16 or 22 or some other pretend villans. Try organizing the fools who keep infusing 1631.

Interesting! 10 hour days. 10 hour days means you don't need as many PO's. Some cities, smaller ones have 12 hour shifts which requires fewer officers. Saves one hell of a lot on the budget.

I don't see how changing from a pension to 401K type plan would help the City. A pension keeps the employee locked into an employer to recieve the benefit. If the City put us all into a 401K then we would be fully vested within 3-5 years. At that point a copper could leave the CPD for another dept w/o losing any retierment benefits. The City would lose out on the amount of money it spent on you in the academy, and on the job during the first few years while learing to become an effective P.O.
A smaller dept may offer a lateral transfer, at the same senority pay rate as achieved at the CPD. Imagine a 20-30% turn over rate of coppers each year. That would be 2000-3000 coppers being hired and trained each year.

To actually post something about the 10hr days. An insider told me that the 10hr days were canceled because the overall numbers were down for the 10hr day officers. They came in with the same parkers, movers, etc as if they were working an 8 hr day. This would equal lower numbers since you worked less days.
The city can't have less revenue even though those officers had less medical time usage and fewer CR's. The city cares nothing about us and they just showed it again. Big Phil showed he doesn't run the dept, the finance commitee does.

Thats called staying on topic, without whining

Very true the FOP needs to address issues for us (the officers)and gather information in a way we dont get f*&^ed with. FYI northside districts on 3rd watch are having there mover books inspected and in the words of there LT you better get writing before the inspection. The FOP should be asking OR WHAT? There PSCY bull does not work

BETWEEN THE RED LIGHT CAMERAS AND THE PARKING TICKET COMMANDOS WHO PILE OUT OF VANS IN THE BAR DISTRICTS THE CITY SHOULD HAVE PLENTY OF MONEY. ALL THE NEW HIGH PRICED HOUSING UNITS PAYING TAXES AND THE HIGHEST SALES TAX & FUEL TAX RATE........ONLY MISMANAGEMENT AND CORUPTION ARE TO BLAME FOR ANY REVENUE SHORTFALL.....

First of all, I no longer am a WATCH Rep with the FOP.

However I feel that today’s leadership in Lodge 7 is pretty decent compared to the past. When its time that today’s Lodge 7 “gets stale”, THEN IT’S TIME TO VOTE THEM OUT and replace them with competent, ethical individuals that can go up against the city without any fear.

Compared to other “unions”, the way contacts, grievances and other issues are completed are pretty damn good. Other unions nowadays are still more or less like organized crime outfits. The unions of old would screw over its membership like you would not believe. Ask some old-timers out there who worked real jobs.

Its true, WE DO NOT have the right to go on strike. Instead we have “interest arbitration” as we know. THIS IS BETTER THAN THE RIGHT TO STRIKE believe it or not. When we no longer can negotiate with the city on a contract, it goes to an arbitrator that both sides agree on. The arbitrator looks at what all other comparable police departments are getting and then makes his decision. It’s a lot better than having the right to strike and not having an arbitrator, we would get nowhere like many other unions.

As far as complainant and ideas.. GET TOGETHER!! STAY TOGETHER!! GO TO GENERAL MEETINGS!!! When you have ideas, get together with other officers and form committees, PRESENT your ideas to the President and stay on him at every meeting. It’s true that “The squeaky wheel gets the oil”. Just look at this issue of detailing cars to 011… LOOK AT THE POWER OF THIS BLOG!! It works! STICK TOGETHER!! Let your voices be heard!!

Good luck trying to bring anything up that’s negative at an FOP meeting. You will be called out of order! The FOP is garbage. We need a real UNION. Maybe it would be good if we got a real union that’s run by the outfit. Maybe things will get done! Mark and Co., they're useless. They don’t go out to roll-calls and see how the officers are doing. They will meet you at any Drinking Establishment. Mark wrote a letter to the Supt. to reconsider the 10 Hr days. A Letter, that’s it. Maybe he should have represented us and went to the Media (ex. Newspapers, News Crews) But I guess when you work hand and hand with the mayor to screw the membership, I would look out for my future too Mark, I bet you will have a nice cushy job when your voted out. You’re an embarrassment to the membership, MARK & Co. ………. YOUR OUT OF ORDER!

If you don't like the way things are.. CHANGE THEM!!! Go to the damn meetings instead of crying like a typical cry baby cop!! Get elected next time around and make a difference. The biggest bunch of bitches in the world.. coppers.
