Murder Tally Is ...

... down 3 from last year (through November). The Tribune article (registration may be required) says that homicides were up 15 during August, but an unusually quiet November drove the numbers back down. The story also cites the superintendent's hiring back officers at time-and-a-half on weekends as one of the reasons for the drop.

Hmmm.... The 25th District has had both the Area 5 Level II DOC and the highest number of homicides all year long. How does the Superintendent explain such an anomoly? Shouldn't a district with so much extra manpower have a noticable decline in its overall number of murders?

But why sweat the small things? Whats important is that the City of Chicago is down a whooping 3 homicides for the year thus far.

What happens though when the homicide rate starts increasing? I guess it will be time for the Superintendent to invent a new method of policing.

Is it I, or is there something very wrong about hiring back people in December for the sole purpose of keeping the number of homicides down from the previous year? And then stop the program the first day of the new year? I guess they don’t care too much about 2006 homicide victims until the number starts getting up there next year.

Would not a better strategy be to hire back officers during the peak killing times of June-August?

This is such a blatantly statistic driven policy it makes me sick!!!

hiring back people lowered the homicide rate? are they kidding or what? has anyone commented on rates in surrounding suburbs, cities, states, etc.? I mean, it might be down nationwide, too, but: maybe we're just pushing the crime around, maybe the bangers need better aim, maybe it's just an off year for the thugs. People killing people: its the American way, while the politicians bow to the gods of homicide statistics....

I think it has been mentioned before but a large reason the number of Homicides are down is the fact that medical technology has advanced. Someone who is shot today can be saved as opposed to even a few short years ago the wound would have been fatal. I don't know the numbers but are agg batteries, especially those with firearms up, down or the same?

Game ban shot down

This is why I can never vote Democratic. They want a parent to be notified if your kid buys a violent game but have no problem with a minor having an abortion without parental consent. This is the party that has no problem killing an innocent unborn child but balks when a thug like that Crip in LA kills 4 people, goes through 26 years of appeals and finally is going to get what he deserves but since he wrote some childrens books hes suddenly OK. Maybe if he wrote books for unborn aborted children they would want him dead.

I know, I know, off topic. Sorry.

Why is it when the bosses want their numbers to change that ALWAYS happens.

We write exactly what they want on the headings of our case reports or we get punished. The crime reporting of this department is a real scandal.

The headings of our case reports are somthing from the Land Of Oz.

Daley wants so much to have murder rates that justify his desire to keep every possible gun ban in place.

Why did Daley put constant ans unrelenting pressure on the University of Chicago to get Dr. John Lott canned? Lott wrote the book, More Guns, Less Crime.

Daley hated Dr. Lott's work that showed the gun laws Daley wanted are meaningless or increased crime. Lott collected some seroius cash and quietly went to Yale and is now part of the Eneterprise Institute.

TRU can't spell clear up.
They try but they are inadequate.
They are without adult leadership and seasoned , court appearing, officers -ones who get CONVICTIONS.
Arrests are meaningless without a follow up that is supported in the court by a finding or plea of guilty . Wake up young dudes and old. Learn the law and follow through with conviction. Testify with pride and knowledge. TGo to court. Make time or money. Lose a few to learn, and never make the same mistakes twice. Have pride in the fact that we can do the job to the end. It's the conviction that states you did a job flawlessly. No politic, no glad handing, no bullshit. YOU did it because you are the professional that made it under the wire of " business as usual". The naysayers will flourish, ignore them, hold your standards high and put the bastards in the house. Fuck the coments about being a pimp for the lawyers. Only the inept will respond to that line of thought. There is no rational to counter thourough police work. DUI, misdemeanoe theft, P.S.M.V., agg abtt, murder....all the same, go for it and make the case stick. Your proof is in the verdict. The fix...??? Yes, it's a;ways there, it's a matter of fact. Theres nothing more satisfying than walking into court prepared (particularly with a serious crime), watching the defense lawyer look at you with disdain, arrogance, contempt and the notion that you are nothing more than an uneducated, stupid blue collar, middle class laborer who will surely make his job of getting his client off much easier and then watching him when you get a conviction. Don't blame TRU...they are a product of their environment. 2 yrs OTJ, no real experience as of yet. They are thrown into a "unit" with their peers, and fed some B.S. about how they are the reason #'s are down and they are able to stop gang crime just by their presence. My suggestion don't believe the hype! Who will they learn from? Experience is needed....in court, OTJ & with ASA's. Here's an idea maybe write up a search warrant once in a while then pound on your chest and tell everyone you're part of an elite unit.

However, I can see why a Robbery is considered a "property crime", because, yes, a wallet, purse or $$$ is someones property... or is this another one of the great "smoke and mirrors" tricks???

And no i'm not a housemouse, kissass or whatever else you wanna call me, I work in 011 and get to see some of these dimebag "real police," everyday and it kinda makes me laugh because I know coppers in slower districts that would run circles around some of these guys; nice people they just need to chill alittle.....

No, index crimes are and continue to be index crimes. Those statistics are UCR code driven, i.e. 03XX.

The difference you are speaking of is that Robbery has been Moved into the old Property Crimes Oversight Office and has become Robbery Burglary Theft in the Detective Division. It is still considered a robbery and is still considered by UCR statistics as a Robbery. There are no smoke and mirrors there.

Detectives that handle Robbery handouts now are being supervised by property crimes supervisors. Thats about it.

No mystery and no smoke and mirrors.

I'm not Sharky or the other follow-up posters, but I'll second what they said.

All of this is not right. I realize that there might not be a great deal of experience and leadership in TRU, but you do NOT sit down with 9 other cars at any restaurant and let the restaurant pay. This is simply fucking outrageous strong-arming of a decent business.

And for the "can I get someone here to do my job", you have to be kidding. I'm one of the pro-DUIers on these boards, but like the man said, don't stop what you can't handle.

I'm not judging because, if nothing more, I'd suspect its just a lack of experience and leadership there. Negligence and certainly not intent in either case.

But as a unit, y'all have to do more thinking. 9 cars in one place and not one person thought to make sure that something like 80% of the meal (plus tip) was covered?

Screw that. I'm going into the place next time I'm in the neighborhood in the afternoon, and I'm doubling my bill in the tip just for the point of apologizing on behalf of the department.

When I worked special employment, public housing north long ago, we weren't allowed to: investigate traffic crashes, transport bodies, or do missing persons case reports. Otherwise, anything and everything else was fair game.

I made all kinds of arrests, including DUI while working public housing.

The female police officer in 022 who supposedly made an ass of herself (if she said what's attributed to her) by saying she was on her way to lunch. Unless it involved a crash and she has standing orders not to handle crashes, it was her job. If she needed help, then ask for help, but don't make an ass of yourself on the radio by failing to do a police function.

re: the traffic crash event....there is no question that law enforcement officers are responsible and obligated to investigate and respond to criminal incidents that come to their attention (ie., on view, on duty, etc.). The differentiation between district units and specialized units (TRU, SOS), is nice to debate, but on the witness stand (assuming a civil lawsuit concerning the incident): "officer, you were on the scene of this event, what did you do, and what did you not do, and why?".....the officer says that "I don't work in that area, I don't take calls, I was on my way to lunch????".....meanwhie, the jury looks at them and wonders........huh???? and I, for the first time in 30 years, dust off my law degree in an effort to collect a verdict in favor of the victim and against the city AND the officer(s) involved......

She added that she didnt know what to write in the case and arrest report. I kindly directed her to speak to her superviser and call us back when she figured it all out.

WTF, what people are they putting in these units? What are they being told by their supervisors?
