Just Because We Can ...

... and because the US Government says we have to have "Truth in Labeling" laws - and the title says "Sarcasm and Silliness," doesn't it?

We decided to take another look at the picture from last Friday:

Have these new Sergeants started school yet? Have they told them how not to step in a pile of shit yet? We'd like to see the syllabus for that classroom exercise.

Struggling Back From War's Once-Deadly Wounds

PALO ALTO, Calif. - It has taken hundreds of hours of therapy, but Jason Poole, a 23-year old Marine corporal, has learned all over again to speak and to walk. At times, though, words still elude him. He can read barely 16 words a minute. His memory can be fickle, his thinking delayed. Injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq, he is blind in his left eye, deaf in his left ear, weak on his right side and still getting used to his new face, which was rebuilt with skin and bone grafts and 75 to 100 titanium screws and plates.

Men and women like Corporal Poole, with multiple devastating injuries, are the new face of the wounded, a singular legacy of the war in Iraq. Many suffered wounds that would have been fatal in earlier wars but were saved by helmets, body armor, advances in battlefield medicine and swift evacuation to hospitals. As a result, the survival rate among Americans hurt in Iraq is higher than in any previous war - seven to eight survivors for every death, compared with just two per death in World War II.

But that triumph is also an enduring hardship of the war. Survivors are coming home with grave injuries, often from roadside bombs, that will transform their lives: combinations of damaged brains and spinal cords, vision and hearing loss, disfigured faces, burns, amputations, mangled limbs, and psychological ills like depression and post-traumatic stress.

So many military men and women are returning with head injuries combined with other wounds that the government has designated four Veterans Affairs hospitals as "polytrauma rehabilitation centers" to take care of them. The Palo Alto hospital where Corporal Poole is being treated is one.

"In Vietnam, they'd bring in a soldier with two legs blown off by a mine, but he wouldn't have the head injuries," said Dr. Thomas E. Bowen, a retired Army general who was a surgeon in the Vietnam War and who is now chief of staff at the veterans hospital in Tampa, Fla., another polytrauma center. "Some of the patients we have here now, they can't swallow, they can't talk, they're paralyzed and blind," he said.

War not the only option on Iran

As the drums of war continue to beat in regard to Iranian nuclear capability, there are some glaring omissions in disclosure by the administration — namely that Iran has mutual defense treaties signed with both Russia and China. If we launch a pre-emptive attack on Iran, can we be certain that Russia, with its advanced nuclear arsenal, will remain neutral or will it honor its treaty?

If we use tactical nukes, as extolled by Dick Cheney, will Russia respond in kind? Will energy-starved China, and its 1.6 billion people, see a U.S. attack on Iran as an attack on its national security? China has huge natural gas and oil contracts with Iran, and we seem incapable of handling the 26 million people in Iraq.

It's been said that if the only tool you have is a hammer, you will tend to see every problem as a nail. Maybe this is a problem of perception, and President Bush sees his only tool to be the military. That would make every problem a war just waiting to happen. It seems like a good time for cooler heads to prevail. Let's hope we find some, and soon.

Bin Laden expert skeptical about latest purported bin Laden tape

by Amber Rupinta, WTDV-TV -- Durham, NC

Jan. 19, 2006

A Duke professor says he is doubtful about Thursday's audiotape from Osama bin Laden. Bruce Lawrence has just published Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama Bin Laden, a book translating bin Laden's writing. He is skeptical of Thursday's message.

"It was like a voice from the grave," Lawrence said.

He has doubts about the tape, and thinks bin Laden is dead. Lawrence
recently analyzed more than 20 complete speeches and interviews of the al Qaida leader for his book. He says the new message is missing several key elements.

"There's nothing in this from the Koran. He's, by his own standards, a faithful Muslim," Lawrence said. "He quotes scripture in defense of his actions. There's no quotation from the Koran in the excerpts we got, no reference to specific events, no reference to past atrocities."

To the goof who posted that we should attend the benefit for the copper that got DUI'ed, I have a question: Was the copper in fact driving drunk? If yes, then why the fuck would I go waste my time and money attending the idiot's benefit?

People need to take responsibility for their actions. You drive drunk feel lucky you only got a ticket and not locked up for reckless homicide or that the passenger in the car you were driving is not paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life!!!

"This is almost as good as being an Oprah book," said William Blum, after Osama bin Laden pimped his book, "Rogue State," rocketing it onto Amazon.com's top-seller list. Last week the U.S. government denied Blum a travel visa to Cuba to appear at the Havana Book Fair. (Maybe this is a stunt to monitor those who buy the book- and Osama is dead!)

Decoding the latest "bin Laden" tape

Ah, yes, another low-quality tape from bin Laden's secret cave complex.

Pardon my skepticism.

Why is it that every message from the man works to confirm Bush's talking points, I wonder?

For instance:

The war against America and its allies will not be confined to Iraq. Iraq has become a magnet for attracting and training talented fighters.

What "OBL" is saying is that Al Qaeda is the major enemy fighting the U.S. in Iraq. While it is true that there are elements of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the purported statement subtly refutes the fact that most of the fighters in Iraq are insurgents fighting the occupation of their country. "OBL" therefore reinforces Bush's continous equating of Iraqi insurgents and Al Qaeda.

Another interesting statement:

But I plan to speak about the repeated errors your President Bush has committed in comments on the results of your polls that show an overwhelming majority of you want the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. But he (Bush) has opposed this wish and said that withdrawing troops sends the wrong message to opponents, that it is better to fight them (bin Laden's followers) on their land than their fighting us (Americans) on our land.

and:

Your president is misinterpreting public opinion polls which show that the vast majority of you support the withdrawal of your forces from Iraq. If your desire for peace, stability and reconciliation was true, here we have given you the answer to your call."

Bush's mantra of late has been that supporters of withdrawal are aiding the enemy, and that opposition to the war plays into the hands of terrorists. How convenient that this tape will now be used to support that absurd notion. I can already hear wingnut radio hosts -- "Didn't you hear what bin Laden said? You pinko peaceniks are playing right into his hands!"

Anyone who opposes the war is doing bin Laden's bidding.

It's too fucking convenient. And, with all the scandals and legal problems the Bush Cult is dealing with, a good dose of fear about an impending attack is just what they need. Remember -- they rule by cultivating fear.

Pay attention GOOF and realize that their is more to life than your little world. By all accounts except the guy that wrote him, the copper was NOT drunk. There is a personality conflict between the two of them so the on duty guy wrote the off duty guy.

Now, you made the statement that if he was was in fact drunk, why the fuck would you want to go to his benefit, right? So now that your aware that there are other issues surrounding this matter, can I count on YOU showing up? C'mon big mouth, lets see if your all show and no go as I suspect. I'm challeging you,are you going?
Just as I thought.

The ONLY reason I posted or asked anything about this was to get our guys to show support for another copper that is by all accounts, being railroaded by another because of a personal vendetta. I'd like to show another copper from another juristiction that we are all together, no matter where we work, rank we hold or what our personal beliefs are, because as we all know, a person is innocent until PROVEN guilty in a court of law. But I guess you forgot that part, right.

So now back to my original question before we were interrupted by the self rightous, know it all moronic goof, does anybody have any information about the benefit for the copper in Aurora that was CHARGED with DUI? If you do, please post it so that those of us who believe in helping out other coppers in their time of need, particularly those that are merely ACCUSED of a crime may do so.

Goof, you need not respond. You have already embarrassed yourself and have shown us what you are really made of.

Thanks all.

Is "Top Cop" the same lazy fuck who sued some white shirts because of "racial issues"? Gotta love it he came to the district talking about what a great cop he was and of the stuff he did. DID, being the operative word...Guess he felt all he had to do was talk to the “womens” and sit at the outside café at Melvin B’s. When the lazy ass and his fellow “Southsiders” were called on it, they beefed and sued. (While not all “brothas” that worked in the district while I was there, were lazy it just so happened the group involved in the lawsuit were.) I’m not saying you should "bust your ass" on this job. What I am saying if you choose to do the bare minimum and stick other folks with jour “jobs”. Just “shut the fuck up” and stop singing your own praises. Better yet stick with your crew and just keep on playing the video games at the North ave Best Buy. Oh yeah, probably not a good idea, the employees there got tired of the extra police attention, and called OPS. Even they complained about your “Posse” blowing off jobs. Yeah you should probably wait till that CR # is completed

Regarding the NPD Sgt. that was DUIed. He is one of the few real police in that department. A true gentleman and a stand-up guy. His father was CPD retired. As for the tool, ( another Sgt. by the way), that DUIed him. What goes around comes around. If we can't take care of one another, who will. There were other ways to handle it, I would hope. But speaking as someone who worked for that dept. before coming here, I know the discretion allowed in that place is minimal. Benefit is 28 JAN in Aurora.
