Mr. Rockatansky? Your Car Sir

Now this is cool:

We figure that we are within 5 to 10 years of a true "Mad Max" type automobile. And after we finish nuking Iran, we can ship a bunch of these over there and patrol the wasteland that was Persia. The oil will still be safe underground, so it truly COULD be like a "Mad Max" type of existence. (hat tip to Ace of Spades)

Anyone got any comments on the new Chevys? Better or worse than the Fords?
I personally still think the Box Chevy was the best in recent years.

actualy, are there any opinions re: this car vs. the Chevys? (interior space wise, etc.). Some say that the Dodge's are better, faster, etc., and that the Chevy's are tighter/smaller up front. Ideas, anyone?

Chevys blow! They should have stayed with the Fords...although, the Dodges wouldn't be bad, either.

The new Chevy sucks! I'm a normal sized guy that drives one with no cage, and I'm still cramped. There is absolutely no room in these cars!

The funny thing is that the Dodge Charger is not only better, but cheaper than the Impala. So what does the Department do, they buy the shittier more expensive car. Apparently whoever is in charge of vehicle purchases must be getting a kickback, as theres no justification for buying these pieces of garbage over the Ford or Dodge.

Oh well! What do you expect from the Chicago Police Department?

Well, the Dodge makes far more sense than those stupid Hummers or Tahoes....which the city is purchasing for $60K - $80K a pop. I think the Hummer gets 8mpg...Yeah that's a smart fiscal move. What I really don't understand is the city did a study of the Impala and found it too small on the interior before they purchased any. How much sense does that make. Next we will be patrolling in a focus or a civic.

The Impala is garbage, the front is to small, the trash in the back has 6 more inches leg room than we do in the front. I f you think I ma lying measure it. I own the Charger, it has loads of room in it, it has great acceleration nice top end, the traction control is so much better than the Fords. The City didn't do there homework on the Chevy's. I figure one day we will find out that the Dealership we got them through was owned by some aldercreature's family members, or one of King Richards Family members. I have talked to some of the smaller municipalities that are going over to the dodges and trashing the Chevy's due to extremely higher maintenance costs.

It turns out that last Thursday was "Glow Stick Night" at the Manhole. (They party and stick these glow sticks up their buttholes I guess.) Well a bunch of glow sticks went missing and they guy that took them left his wallet behind with his license. The tact-team obtained a warrant to arrest the subject and get the glow sticks back. They sniffed them to make sure they were the right ones.

I think thats what happened.

The city joined the lawsuit against ford for the exploding gas tank think-like, show me a sedan that gets rear ended at 80mph and doesn't blow, so ford go pissed and at all the agencies that sued and made it hard for them to get the crown vics. chevy gave the city a 2 for 3 deal- buy 2 get one free- no joke

The city can't do any business with anyone other than a minority contractor, hence they pay more that the average mope on the street, from their gazillion reams of paper to the cars they lease. Anyone could get a better deal. And we have a budget crisis?

Before Fleet took over EMMD from the department, the contract for police cars was with a minority vendor who was absolutely great; after fleet took over, the Italians in command decided that they liked chey better, inspite of the fact that no city contract existed for chevy vehicles, or that there was no minority vendor. (could it be that a goomba had a chevy dealership in Schaumburg?)So they started to down fords for minor accident damage and sell the entire car for what the stripped out hull used to be sold for. Politics as ususal

To Scooter,

Not sure where you got your info from but thats not the reason for the switch or for the fact that we have messed up fords. First, the city is part of lawsuit against ford for the exploding fuel tanks. The city wanted to buy more fords but ford wouldn't sell to us because of the lawsuit. They said you want fords drop the suit, the city wouldn't. They wanted fords but alas we are stuck with the bullshit smaller and more dangerous Impalas. As far as I've been told, we are not buying any more chevy's and are waiting for the charger to come out full blown and will be buying them shortly.

The reason the fords are all messed up is because of us, yes I said it because of us. We are all guilty of driving the police cars like we are the Indy 500. If you take care of what we have we wouldn't have all the problems. Yes EMMD is a circus and doesn't always fix the cars. If we would measure the vehicles usage by hours and not miles we would be better off, but that would not be cost effective.

The Old Veteran says, I love the movie "The Blues Brothers", because it destroyed all those '77 Dodge Monacos. They were made out of melted down Sherman tanks, no air conditioning, no cages and vynal bench seats. You felt secure in them and they hauled ass with a big V-8 and no catalytic coverter. You could flip the air cleaner cover over the carburator (yes, carburator) to get even more horsepower.

Later we got Ford Turinos ala Starsky & Hutch, we had some Ford Fairmonts that were a bad joke, box Chevys, bubble Chevys and the Crown Vic's. All of 'em were wimp-mobiles next to those Monacos.

These new Impalas, what the hell were they thinkin'. Not enough room in them unless you are under 5'6" and 160 lbs. Over that, you have to squeeze your way into it, and more importantly, squeeeeeeze your way out. Two people in the car feel like they are joined at the shoulder. Especially when you add the cage and the computer which you scrape your knuckles on when you change gears. The front wheel drive transmissions are good in the snow in easily driven family cars, but will probably fail often under the stress of police use.

Let face it, this car was designed as a mid priced car for small young families. Even with the enlarged radiator, transmission cooled and the other items in the "Police Package" this is no urban police car.

Here is the best part on the new Chevy's. The city piggy backed the state police contract and the cars get shipped out of the city. The city has to pay something like $100 additional for each car to transport them to 52/Wentworth and they don't truck them in each is driven in...Ahhh got to love the city that works....

Biggest problem with all of this is the stupid procurement process. Because this city setup is so messed up, it takes 2 years or more to iron out a contract to get something. So even if you have $100K grant to buy the product it will take you a couple of years to get the product even if the product is a one of a kind system.

And of course, the biggest problem with the system is checking who the supplier is related to...you know it is tough to keep track of spreading the contracts around to all the politician families.

Yes, cops love to do search warrants. The judge who signs off on them cannot be held liable. And then try to get the city to pay for the damage done to a home by these rouge officers. Bunch of thugs.

Has anyone used the pdts with clear on them. Half of the time they won't let you log on, and for running license plates there even slower than the old pdts. Most of the time when running plates they never come back, or they pop up 10 minutes after running them. The benefit of the pdt is supose to be using the clear system in the field but it takes about ten times as long as the computer in the station. When the computers hit the street a majority of them had to be sent to the shop, due to them burning out modems. Who ever is designing these systems has no idea about whats is needed for working in the field. As usual the city has no intrest in giving us working equipment.

To Old Vet:
Yeah ,the vinyl seats were a bitch in heat and cold it's true but where's your romance???
Air consisted of a shady spot in a park with doors open catching the cross breeze on a sunday morning reading the paper waiting for the first, "beat- blah blah and units on citywide"...
Then, there was no need of a cage, we used things called cuffs and things called wagons.
It wasn't that bad, the job got done.
Every once in a while you'd catch an old dodge with the old fire siren under the hood. Very cool.

I loved the smell of burning brake pads and the sound of clicking mufflers after a chase in the morning.

That's another story for the old guys...chases, we had em and we caught em...when the job was fun.

I work in a suburb, and i have my own take home squad. I have a 2001 crown vic with 55k miles on it, and i am the only one that drives it and keeps it clean. My city mechanics do grease and oil and trans service on it. If some idiot breaks a window on the squad when its parked NEAR my house, i dont care, i drive it in and the city fixes it. I am glad i dont have to share a squad with other people!!

Have to agree with the suburban guy/gal. When I worked in a unit with take home cars, you tended to take care of it. Run it through a carwash (free) and not throw food in the back seat. Guess it is personal pride.

I no longer have a take home car and share with the rest of the watch. Such is life however, Some of the assholes that drive these cars think they are garbage cans with wheels. Back seat and floors are just littered with trash, papers and old coffee cups. Cant get the guys on days to take them for a wash, put gas into them and god forbid change the fucking flat tire that they got and then just parked the car, and signed another one out. Hate to see how they take care of their own cars.

The city was studying take home cars a few years ago. The conclusion is that although take home cars would be more efficient in the long term, in the short term they would require a greater expenditure of capital. We all know its about the short term, hence no take home cars.
