- Shannon Gipson says her son, Romarr, will never escape the horror of the Ryan Harris case.
The young man's psyche has been tortured by the interrogation and jail stay that occurred in August 1998 when he was 7, she said. He and an 8-year-old boy were accused of raping and killing the 11-year-old girl.
Jail stay? We don't think it's legal to house anyone under the age of 9, regardless of the crime committed, but maybe someone with a bit more knowledge than we have can confirm or deny Romarr was ever "jailed." As to the rape and murder accusations, the witnesses and the boy's own statements of knocking Ryan Harris off her bike with a brick to the head and penetrating her vaginally with a stick have still never been made public. Anyone wondering why?
- Shannon Gipson also decried Monday what she sees as a pattern of harassment by the police against her son.
"The fact that they continue to harass him is an issue with me," she said, adding that he had recently been accused of stealing a bicycle by police, even though he had borrowed it.
Gee whiz "Mom," your son has a pattern of stealing bicycles. When bikes go missing and people identify him, it's little wonder the police actually go out and find him with stolen bikes. Little wonder too that the victims suddenly change their stories after getting their bikes back - they know what your son is, even if you don't.
- The most recent charge that Romarr Gipson and his brother shot two men at a Calumet Park gas station Wednesday is not the teenager's only run-in with police.
At 14, Gipson, who lives with his brother and mother in the 10700 block of South King Drive, was charged with accidentally shooting a 15-year-old friend. He was later placed on home monitoring.
Prosecutors said during a bond hearing in Cook County Circuit Court Sunday that Gipson was previously charged with cruelty to animals and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

To my recollection, he and his partner were housed at the Audi Home for a couple of days prior to being released to their parents pending trial in the Harris matter. Hardly jail but likely what Mom is talking about.

We're police officers. We fight crime using our law enforcement skills. This is not a foreign country where people are slain for going against the law. Although I became a policeman to do police work and serve all people, even the mutts, in a fair way, I now realize family members who preceded me on this department were absolutely right in suggesting that you cannot do anything to make a positive change in the lives of persons from certain groups. The only problem that I see with this current P.D. is that there are not enough "Old timers" (even at 10 years) to go around.
There is always something to be said for experience. Usually it's good but I'm not so jaded to realize it does go both ways. Just skip the parts that don't appeal to you and go with the rest.

I kind of agree with both sides of the argument but the young guy doesn’t seem to understand a couple things that are going to make this job miserable for him, number one is that this is a job, If you eat, shit and sleep this police stuff its going to be the death of you. number two is that not every person on the street is a shit head and sometimes even treating the biggest of shit heads with a little fake respect will go a long way. I am not saying bow to your knees every time you see them or even give into their "needs" but the streets are run on respect and sometimes you have to show a little fake respect to Joe shithead to get what you need. I believe the United States of America is the greatest nation on Earth. People who are in this country have an incredible amount of opportunities and blessings. But some people have taken advantage of America’s openness and tolerance. Some come to this country and refuse to learn English, creating a language barrier for city employees. Others enter the country illegally and use government services by not paying taxes or by committing crime on our streets, further draining resources here in Hazleton.
Illegal immigration leads to higher crime rates, contributes to overcrowded classrooms and failing schools, subjects our hospitals to fiscal hardship and legal residents to substandard quality of care, and destroys our neighborhoods and diminishes our overall quality of life.
The City of Hazleton is empowered and mandated by the people of Hazleton to abate the nuisance of illegal immigration by aggressively prohibiting and punishing the acts, policies, people and businesses that aid and abet illegal aliens. That is why I proposed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act.
Part of this ordinance, if enacted, would punish companies that hire illegal immigrants by denying them permits, making it harder for them to renew permits and forcing their loss of city business.
Another part would hold landlords accountable. Because people moving into the city naturally require a place to sleep, our landlords are our first line of defense. Landlords who rent to illegal immigrants—that is, who rent to people without checking their documentation, may be fined $1,000.00 for every illegal immigrant staying on their properties.
The final part of this ordinance makes English the official language of Hazleton. All city documents will only be available in English. Those applying for a permit would have to speak English. While our emergency services will never be denied to anyone because of a language barrier, every other aspect of city business will be conducted only in English. Let me be clear, this ordinance is intended to make Hazleton one of the most difficult places in the U.S. for illegal immigrants.
This measure is not racist because it does not target one particular race. The Illegal Immigration Relief Act is intended to deter and punish any illegal immigration in the City of Hazleton. Requiring the use of English does not target any other language; it merely states that no matter what language you prefer to speak at home, English will be spoken when you conduct business with Hazleton officials.
Illegal Immigration is a drain on city resources. Every domestic incident, every traffic accident, every noise complaint, each time we send our police department, fire department or code enforcement officer to respond, it costs taxpayer dollars.
If the City of Hazleton began publishing official documents or conducting business in a second language, how would we respond when someone asks us to use a third, or fourth language?
Recent crimes – the shooting on Chestnut Street, the discharge of firearms at the Pine Street Playground, and high profile drug busts – have involved illegal immigrants. Sadly, some of those allegedly involved in those crimes were detained by other law enforcement officials over the years, but were somehow allowed to remain in this country. They eventually migrated into Hazleton, where they helped create a sense of fear in the good, hardworking residents who are here legally.
This ordinance does not roll back the welcome mat to those who are legally in the United States. This country was built on the backs of legal immigrants. My own great grandparents came to this country seeking a better life. Rather, this ordinance seeks to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into Hazleton. They are not welcome here!
To the residents of Hazleton, I say thank you for your continued support. Hazleton is moving forward and becoming an even better place to live. To our recently arrived legal immigrants, I say welcome. I personally wish you all the best. With hard work and determination, the United States and Hazleton can be a place where your dreams come true. I also believe the city should retroactively require every P.O. to have at least a 4 year degree.

Okay, there may be something to this college claim. We’re not too old to learn. I have to admit that the education received by the old timers is very different than today’s offering. We had readin’, writin’, rithmetic’, and of course algebra, trigonometry, calculus, history, multiple sciences, foreign and even dead languages, history, geography, English Literature and Composition, theological studies, logic, metaphysics, and a bunch of other stuff. Many of us can still do addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication without the aid of a machine, not to mention, speaking and writing vulgarity free.
However, I digress. Why not show the world which of your educational endeavors had the greatest impact on crime reduction. Was it Criminal Justice? Public Administration? Hotel Motel Management? Packaging? Why not just post your CV? You show me yours and I’ll show you mine.
