Violent Crime Down
- Police say violent crime and burglaries are down, but motor vehicle thefts and arson are up in Chicago so far this year. Through the end of July, sexual assaults were down six-point-six percent from the same period a year ago. Aggravated assault is down four-point-two percent and burglaries are down three-and-a-half percent.
Meanwhile, motor vehicle thefts have jumped by four-and-a-half percent and arson is up by six-point-four percent.
Police say the number of homicides is about the same as last year.
Well, they aren't kidding about motor vehicle thefts. The numbers are up by quite a bit more than 4.5% in some districts. But why not be specific about the number of homicides? Has it suddenly hopped upwards?

So now I know why a B&A guy showed up at our roll call to give us a review on writing arson case reports. I should have seen this coming because he basically told us that unless we have an offender in custody that gives a full confession we should make it a non criminal damage to property report.
The 1/2 hour he was at roll call was probably the longest shift that B&A clout whore has worked in years. I felt like punching him in the face after lecturing us at roll call about how to fill out reports to make his job easier and bring the arson stats down.
Lefty, unemployment is down to it's lowest in years. Lower even when your hero Bill Clinton was in charge. The full and equal employment you advocate is nothing more than communism - everyone getting the same salary regardless of skill level, seniority or any other benchmarks for rating a job's worth. And we all know where communism ended up, don't we? Your quasi-socialist policies kill jobs, kill employment and kill innovation. Go back and take a few Econ 101 course, because you obviously know nothing about how the system works.
I must have attended a different roll call. The Bomb and Arson Dick we had was more into observing and writing the details like gas cans and Heet bottles found at the scene. He also stressed preserving the scene and holding onto witnesses. In over twenty years I have never had a problem with B&A coming to a scene.
As far as the reduction of homicides goes, the C.A.P.S. program will take the credit. But all the manpower wasted on endless accountability paperwork, on meetings and useless missions can't compare with an aging population, profitable dope sales and most important of all, vastly improved emergency medical service.
If we spend less time doing seat belt enforcement in a heavy traffic location and insted saturate the high vehicle theft area in our districts, we might make some impact. Better yet, since goofy seat belt enforcement is like CAPS and "here to stay", lets do seat belt enforcement in the hight vehicle theft area. That just makes too much sense, so forget it.

#1: To Lefty. Job availability is only one part of employment. The other part is the employee willing to accept the job and work it. Most of the criminal gang bangers are going to work when they can make cash slinging dope and other criminal activities.
#2: The City will never let the TV show cops be filmed in Chicago. It would reflect very bad on the minority communities. With most of all the violent crimes being in the minority communities, there would be an uproar on how the TV show only reflected on those of color.
#3: As the old phrase goes, shit in and shit out. Stats are only as good as the information submitted. Show me any stats (good or bad) and one could prove otherwise.
My final thought:
Among all these rumors of different investigations, remember we are in the age of electronic technology. While working I wouldn't say or do anything that could do me in. A camera or a microphone could be anywhere.

I can't tell you how many cases I have handled as a detective myself that some company gave a 2nd chance to an inner city person only to have this same person set up a hold up in the work place or steal money or physically attack a coworker or manager or do some other crime.

Last time I had an arson, it was the CFD Batt Chief who made the call. Then the OFI guys came out, wasn't until then that B&A came out. So tell me again, how can you make an arson disappear?
