BREAKING NEWS!
After the FOP Board meeting on 05 Sept. 06, several Officers had to discuse the ramifications of a lawsuit filed by one of its memers. Apparently, during the retirement party at FOP for a great Detective assigned to A-4 and more recently assigned to Gang Intelligence, there was a incident. (August) The girlfriend of a A-1 Detective fell onto the floor drunk. The girl not only fell once on the main floor of the party knocking several food trays over, but proceeded to the bathroom where she apparently fell head first onto the floor of the bathroom. This of coarse was after her A-1 boyfriend dragged her away from the bar. This would be no concern of the members, another drunken broad at a party, but these two are now suing FOP for emergency room bills and dental bills. The suit claims the floors were wet and not mainatined by lack of on-site maintenance, which caused her injuries. Great!

With three months of training before an official promotion is announced, can we assume that results of the latest test will not come out until December?

From someone who scored well and is on the list where these names came from:
(congrats to these people BTW)

Why, after 16 years of making it to OVER 500 on the Sgt promotional lists, NOT including clout, did the department make it to only around 350 on this list?

-Why do I feel like I just got fucked HARD?
-Why do I feel like the gold stars at 35th and Michigan could give a rat's ass about how those from around 350 to around 550 feel?
-Why do I feel like those at HQ probably could care less if I took a flying shit at the moon?

Questions, questions, soooooo many questions.......

My Lord Jesus. When I look at some of these names on this list I shake my head and can't believe it. There are several people on this list that were just plain lazy slugs. What they did to get higher pay and move up in the department is a mystery to me. I shouldn't be surprised though, just curious of how this promoting works. Today I feel like the American Indian in one of those commercials where the indian guy sees someone throw litter out on the highway. A tear is seen coming out of my eye today on how this shit is getting out of hand. There is literally some shit names on this list. Some times you have really got to wonder what the fuck is going on and whose dick is being sucked behind closed doors. If I think too much about this shit, people will think I'm the nut. There are people out here in cop world that say, study, study, and study harder and you'll make it too kid. Bullshit. Do you realize that if you scored a 1100 on a test for detective or sergeant in this department, there are actually people that think you are a dumbshit. It is just some point system that includes seniority, politics and more politics. Gosh darn it, am I living in some fucked up job atmosphere or what?

Scored well and didnt make it. I'm not the type of person that hates the merit promotions. Its the system and they used it to their benefit. I made the mistake of telling my wife and son that i was going to be promoted. From past lists it appeared I would make it easily. I feel like I failed and let them down. My moral is at an all time low.

regarding the dumb ass braod suing FOP, I am sure there are many people who would come to FOP behalf including myself.

I was there when she took a spill in front of the bar. She was pretty well of on the drink front and was offered help numerous times by those around. Asked numerous times if she was ok. She stated numerous times that she was alright and nothing was wrong.

This is complete bullshit. If you can not handle drinking then don't. If you can not walk in the fancy 3 inch heals you bought then don't. And especially do not drink and walk with them. If FOP gives this broad a dime they are bigger idiots than we all know them to be

After being on furlough and not wanting to see this list you guys snuck it on SCC. As usual I looked at this list and my stomach began to drop. I personally know several of these newly promoted Sergeants and began to think to myself. "Gee these sloth like patrolman who are now Sergeants are going to show up to my crime scene". They chose never to do a God damn thing when they were Patrolman how on earth are they going to offer their experience and knowledge to aid other Officers"? The answer is there NOT! However once there newly laundered white starched chevron shirts hit the streets the ego's will flair. All the do nothingness of the past will disappear. "People better respect me I,m a Sergeant of Police". Well guess what? YOUR REPUTATION PRECEDES WHEREVER YOU GO ON THIS DEPARTMENT AND PEOPLE REMEMBER". "You cannot recreate history". Respect must be earned there is no dodging that. I read this list and know one of "the newly" promoted one period in 1996 recovered 36 guns in one period". Another a great copper that clearly understands "the job". And to you I commend you and your families and know you will well deserved when a sticky situation arises. However if you look at the activity on several other recent promotee's you will see some just made a career of studying GO,s while at work. Others had nice desk spots and that is fine BUT JUST REMEMBER coppers know bullshi* when they see it so please for your own good just remember YOUR PREVIOUS WORK ETHIC" I will asssure wherever you land with your Political rip cord we will be waiting with baited breath and big laughs.

I still don't know what the big deal is in the education rule. It is not like you need a degree in Criminal Justice or management. You could have taken all of your credits in basket making. If all of the new hires must have the credit hours everyone on the job will have them at one point. Lets not hold it against the older guys and disregard all of their experence just because they just didn't pay for one of the fast food courses at the academy that pumps out degrees. And yes, I do have a degree.

Here is something for future management to consider:

[Quote taken from the Chicago Tribune concerning internet options for police testing.]

Former emergency-room nurse Elizabeth Stewart, a trustee at Peoples Church, questioned the current levels of police staffing.

"We need more blacks, more Asians, more females," she said. "I think if there were more female [officers], there would be less shootings."

Everytime a promotion list comes out, the jealous, the envious and the just plain stupid come straight here to whine, complain, and give their opinion on who made it.

Ten years ago I worked with a guy who was known as a "dog" as a P.O. because he wasn't locking up one baggers everynight. Fast forward to today, and he is considered one of the best sergeants in this District, knowledgable and always helpful. I'd take a hundred "dogs" like him over some of you "real police" anyday.

SMART GUYS: I know it's hard to admit but there are actually people smarter than me on this job.
They get better scores on tests because they try harder than my lazy ass. So instead of trying to better myself, I'll just keep on whining and complaining about clout and the unfairness of it all.
It makes me feel better, "It's not my fault at all, they are all ploting against me."

Congrats to all who recently got promoted. To the poster who said he was #1100 and felt "dumb" (and I'm paraphrasing here), you're not dumb, you just didn't do well. Get over it. In future promotional tests, it appears that if you're not in the top 300
(for Sgt.), you'll be on the bubble. If you don't score in the top 100 (for Lt.), you'll also be on the bubble. That's the reality of the situation for the future.
For those of you who are loudly (or silently) beating yourselves up because you didn't make it, DON'T. Downtown doesn't care. Get over it, go out there and do what you have to do with whatever pride you can muster. You are worth far more to your families, your partners, and your teammates
(if you work on a team) than this job will ever know or publicly acknowledge. Don't base your self worth on the basis of these promotional tests. I can understand how those of you who are now out of the running on that old list must feel (took me two tests and most of my 20+ years to make Sgt., and NOT by merit!), but let it go. A good rule to follow throughout your career on this job is to simply not allow the job to have too much control over your life (i.e., feelings of frustration, being unappreciated, even jealousy/envy, watching others pass you up on the promotion ladder). Get past it, move on, you'll feel better for doing so. At least you have another chance in 3 years. When I came on the job, they only offered promotional exams about once every 8 years, and litigation made the process soooo much slower.

Another thing. Sure, there are likely to be at least a FEW deabeat coppers on the new promotion list. Hopefully, they will strive to do better, and BE better supervisors. As one poster pointed out, if any of them were dog-asses, their reputations will follow them to their new assignments. Hopefully, those with less than stellar reps will work much harder to be the kind of first line supervisors who will cause their subordinates to have faith in and be inspired BY them.
Good luck to all, because it truly IS the worst job on the job.....
Patrol Supervisor.

Stand to be corrected. The merit Sgt.s do go through the detective training, prior to sgt.s training. The city does not want you to know who is merit.

In case you haven't heard we use to be one of the oldest dept.s and are now one of the youngest. This is why the city doesn't go to 500+ on the sgt.s lists anymore. Would you rather the list stay up for 7 or 8 yrs. Get use to it. The higher you go, the harder it gets, unless of course you're heavy.
Besides, I worked for one of those Sgt.s who was promoted on a 500+ list and believe me he's proof they should have taken it down at 350! Sgt.class of 97, don't let the 9 yrs in rank fool you. Stupid!

I can honestly tell you that I took the sgts and detective tests each once to see what they were like. Then the next time around for the 2001 sgts test I STUDIED AND JOINED A STUDY GROUP (no clout) and no its not a guarantee that you will do well but you must have the "concentration that it takes" to conquer the material and be able to write your essay anwers so they can be scored properly. I have seen many case reports and many of them lack proper grammar and content. USE THE BRAINS GOD GAVE YOU AND IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS. Thats my advice to future P.O.s taking promotional tests. It took me three times and I made it.

To 05:35..... Thanks Sgt. for your message. It was well written. You probably are a good Sgt. to work for. Yes, being on the bubble sucks and you do beat yourself up over not making it. With time it will all pass. Right now it is hard to stomach. I consider myself a hardworking copper. Not sure what direction I will take in the future. Working hard and scoring what i thought was well did me no good. One thing is for sure I have no faith in our leadership....

Don't listen to that man behind the 5:41:19 curtain . I guarantee that all those promoted to Sgt. will absolutely love their new jobs. Is there a downside? Sure, but the good far exceeds the bad. The worst job on this Dept. is the one from which they are coming. Patrolman on a beat car. THAT is the worst job by far.

I'm not asking for a fucking fair test. In this shithole town fairness or true merit are ridiculous concepts. All I'm asking for is that even half these FUCKING IDIOTS WHO GET PROMOTED MAKE JUST ONE FELONY ARREST BEFORE THEY GET FUCKING PROMOTED. See, that's not asking a lot. It won't happen on this joke of a job though. I still love this job. No accountability for you, no accountability for me. Easy fucking money baby. Easy money.

FACT - merit sergeants ARE included in the detective familiarization list. The only additional merit names that will be added are currently detectives.

(Unless offenders are carrying cell-phones)

Actually, "anonymous 5:14PM", you're wrong. Being a patrol Sgt. IS the worst job on the job. You see, A lot of stuff patrolmen can blow off, the Sgt. CAN'T. Once he has become aware of a truly f**ked up situation, he or she better correct it, and quickly. Because if he/she doesn't act upon it quickly, depending in the seriousness of the situation, the Sgt. will likely receive DOUBLE the suspension time that the offending P/O would. I've seen it happen time and time again. The old "gosh, boss, I didn't know" line works for P/O's occasionally, but NEVER works for a Sgt. The boss will simply look at the Sgt. and say, "well, Sarge, you SHOULD have known. Here's your time off!"
The only suspension time I have ever received in my two decades plus on this job has been in the rank of Sgt. As a P/O, I stayed away from thieves, drunks, out of control guys that couldn't keep it in their pants. As a patrol Supervisor, I have to deal with these knuckleheads every day. I can't walk into the W/C's office and tell the boss, "I don't want to have that guy under my supervison. He's an asshole, won't do as he's told, takes too long on jobs, is never where he's supposed to be when I look for him." I have to take the conscientious, and those who apparently have no conscience at all. And hope like hell that the total mix I have on any given day will give my sector the coverage it needs, while at the same time
(hopefully) receive a minimum of beefs and requests of citizens to "see the supervisor" for the goofs who wouldn't even get out of the car to provide basic police service. One glaring example comes to mind: Years ago, I had a woman who worked for me write up a "Damage to Property" report for a broken window to a public library. Shortly thereafter, the ET requests a supervisor meet. I met the ET, who really didn't want to (no pun intended here) finger this woman. But as we entered the front door to this public library with the glass busted out, I noted that the glass LED ALL THE WAY INSIDE THE LIBRARY TO THE MAIN DESK. Looking over the counter, I saw that ALL THE DRAWERS HAD BEEN PULLED OUT, AND DUMPED. This officer didn't even bother to go inside and see if entry had occurred! How could she have missed such obvious signs of a burglary?? And she remained "down at this location" until the ET arrived, whereby she left quickly (well over an hour...some copper!)
She claimed that none of the conditions that the ET and I observed "existed while I was there," which basically accused the me and the ET of committing the burglary ourselves. What a lousy exuse for an officer! Imagine having to go behind dumbasses like this EVERY DAY. People who are busting their ass to do the least professional job they can do, on every assignment, every day. And they're out there, pal. True, I doubt anyone on the current Sgts. list will turn the promotion down, but many will regret it when they see how much control the inmates have over the nut house. Oh, the officer I described? She eventually was promoted to Sgt. Go figure! I won't say where she works, but I hope she's doing a better job in stripes than she did in blues.

The woman I mentioned earlier wasn't a drunk, at least not on duty. She just didn't care about how she performed her duties. Some people actually think it's cool to actively work at doing the least competent job they can, on every assignment, and make no bones about letting all of their co-workers know it. To each his own. Those are the people who get no perks from me. No longer than allowed lunch, no time on the end, and don't ask! You get what you give, fair is fair. I've handled jobs for the workers, held their radios, logged them off their PDT's, and allowed them to skip out a little early on the end, when it's not too crazy out there. A decent boss should do whatever he/she can for workers. It wasn't like that officer was stupid, she scored very well on the test she got promoted from.
She made a choice to be incompetent. Like I said, some take pride in how they do the job, and some simply have none. I don't have a problem with people who are unmotivated, and I hope they don't have a problem with giving the Job a full 8.5 hrs. every day.

You were worried that you could get fingered in the burglary? Are you kidding? What kind of sergeant are you? You order her to re-do the report correctly or you get a CR number on her.. or are you afraid the troops will say bad things about you?

This job ain’t rocket science and I say the sergeant’s job is overall a great job. In my 12+ years as a sergeant I never had to worry about covering up for screwballs that did stupid things because if they did I would at the very least admonish them or if I had to get a number on them. We’re all over 21, if some goof does something stupid he deserves to get nailed for it.

Oh well, gotta go hit the hole again and watch my 3rd DVD for the night!

I repeat, IMHO, this is the EASIEST and BEST job I've ever had. Sounds to me like you better start disciplining some of your subordinates. You can't be their friend and boss at the same time. They either do what they are supposed to do or else, simple as that. I HATE,repeat HATE getting CR numbers but in that case it would have been an automatic. If you don't want to be a Sgt and all the things that go along with it, then turn in them stripes. I hear VCG has a sale right now on blue shirts.
To all those newly promoted, welcome aboard. It's a great job and you will love it.

Way to go Terry Forbes, Jim Laufer and Mike Muszynsky!!!

It's always nice to see current and former 025th District guys make it legit.

Yeah Jimmy "the Dogass" Loughf! This guy did everything while in 015 for a whole year before retiring to the 016th District because he had been the police for so long. Sounds like we have a potential 35th Streeter here. God help us!
BTW, Whoever thinks that these tests are legit needs to wake up and smell the clout.

Ok, maybe you should have taken the job because you wanted to be the POLICE, not because it's a GOOD JOB. This is exactly the problem with this department. If people on this job would treat this as a CHOSEN profession as oppossed to a "JOB" than we wouldnt have so many issues with each other and the idiots in the media. Sounds to me like you couldnt find a profession outside of your fathers.

Quit fooling yourself. Did you pay attention in the academy? Don't you remember what all your classmates did before getting hired by the CPD? If not, ask the people you work with. This JOB was much better than the one before.

As for CHOSEN profession, please. How about the best option when my name came up on the list. You sound like a person who won't admit this but rather fool yourself into thinking "I chose to be the police, this is what I wanted to do my whole life." Thats fine - unless of course you had a better job before getting hired by the CPD. If you did, you would not be carrying that star in your wallet.
