Gutierrez is the Challenger

As we observe the political scene, it becomes more and more our opinion that Gutierrez is positioning himself to be the main rival to the current mayor and the Dorothy Brown candidacy is nothing but a farce to draw crucial minority votes away from Gutierrez. You have articles like this... :
  • Rep. Luis Gutierrez is blasting Mayor Daley for vetoing the big-box minimum wage ordinance -- and for framing the debate in racial terms in a divided city once known as "Beirut on the Lake."

A potential mayoral challenger, Gutierrez said he would have signed the ordinance mandating Wal-Mart and 42 other retailers to pay their employees at least $13 an hour in wages and benefits by 2010.

... which show Gutierrez is bringing up issues that have the potential to embarrass the mayor or making the mayor answer uncomfortable questions, while Dorothy Brown refuses to take a stand on anything and won't even take the mayor to task over issues that will generate headlines and boost her name recognition. Even John Kass notes that Daley has begun sounding like a preacher and a politician at the same time, deftly framing the big box debate in terms of jobs for neglected minority neighborhoods.

Brown is a plant. Potted plant or Machine plant, she brings nothing to the campaign. And what Gutierrez brings isn't going to sell most places. Still, the Sun Times speculates that the mayor may be facing his first ever runoff. We shall see.

Gutierrez will never win it because Mexicans can't stand Puerto Ricans, and most of 'em can't vote anyway.

I say we all write in Mariam Santos for Mayor and watch the Machine go down the toilet faster than a drunken State's Attorney's carreer.

Not one of these three lowlifes has said a thing about making our lives, the lives of city employees better.

If Jackson comes in, and promises to restore our benefits to
pre-Daley levels, he could force Daley into a run-off and win.

My advise to him is that, and to keep dad out of town, far out of town.

OFF TOPIC:

What the H#LL! How many of you have been involved in NIMS training? I have had zilch/none and this is to be completed by all First responders by OCT. 1, 2006. I know of many others as well. Here is a small portion of what was under NIMS related info. Uhhhhh was this not a Federal Grant and by Homeland Security/required training? Part of the training in these areas should have been already completed by 2005, by all First Responders. I know some have had terrorist training but I know many have not. What gives with these boss's and the city who are not providing the training to their personnel?

NS 105 - Law Enforcement Incident Command System (LEICS)
Law Enforcement Incident Command System (LEICS) simplifies the management of critical incidents by organizing the response into modules. Vehicle collisions, pursuits, officer-involved shootings, natural disasters, and civil disturbances represent only a few of the incidents for which an agency can employ LEICS. Under those circumstances involving multiple jurisdictions, LEICS allows agencies to provide a singular response. As a planning tool, LEICS designates in advance the specific duties of all participants. Perhaps more important, it determines who will be in charge at the scene. Whether they require the response of one agency or many, critical incidents become more manageable with LEICS. Anyone in the law enforcement community from the chief, sheriff or to the patrol officer can implement LEICS into its full configuration

Many are being left out of the loop of NIMS. I would guess the dept. must have created a paper shuffle and retired a slew of us without our knowledge. Can someone connect us back in and let us know what is or isn't happening? Who sets one up for NIMS training? The next question is where did the money go if one never received the training? Clueless in NIMS.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

On NIMS already know it stands for National Incident Mangement System, but how is the dept. setting up the training that's almost completed and should also be considered ongoing? Also know it's listed under a GO and a Presidential directive.

It's just a matter of time before the Hispanics take over the political arena in Chicago. Louie has made a name for himself from Latin King gang member to Congressman big mouth. I tell you what, Let Daley get indicted like I'm sure he soon will and Louie will step up. He is one of the more powerful/influential Hispanic political figures this city currently has. We will see how they play their cards soon.

totally off subject. Can you post something regarding the loss in 003. One of our own died I believe Thurs night/Friday AM. Saul Contreaus died of unk causes (as of yet) All that is know is that he was on a cruise with some buddies, became sick, they docked the boat, took him to a hospital (I think in St. Martinique) and he died several hours later. This is just rough info I learned from some friends in 003. Saul was a GREAT guy. Funny as hell and a good PO. If anyone has any more info......our thoughts are with his family and friends.

I know this is off topic but I have to vent a little. Regarding the Pope and his recent remarks about Islam at an academic conference on religion wherein he quotes a 14 century dialogue which states, "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
And the Islamic reply to this: "We tell the worshipper of the cross (the Pope) that you and the West will be defeated, as is the case in Iraq,
Afghanistan,
Chechnya," said a Web statement by the Mujahideen Shura Council, an umbrella group led by Iraq's branch of al Qaeda.

"We shall break the cross and spill the wine ... God will (help) Muslims to conquer Rome ... (May) God enable us to slit their throats, and make their money and descendants the bounty of the mujahideen," said the statement, posted on Sunday on an Internet site often used by al Qaeda and other militant groups.
So in perfect fashion the Muslims reply to a "mischaracterization" of their faith which implies that they are violent with what....more violence. Just more proof that Islam isn't at all interested in being accepted or tolerated or left to their faith. They want nothing more than to kill everyone that isn't one of "them" ala Germany 1939.
What irks me more than anything is that if these statements were made by any other group the world would be outraged and we'd all be rounding up every single member and holding them until they were too old and frail to accomplish anything ever again.

No one will take over the 5th floor of city hall until Da'Mayor chooses to step down. But one of the previous posters is correct. With the demographics of the city changing, and Hispanics becoming more of a dominant prescence,we will eventually be working for a Hispanic Mayor. I doubt we will ever see another African American running city hall. The chance to assert themselves politically was lost after the death of Harold Washinton and they let themselves be divided as to who his sucessor would be. The white alderman siezed the moment, put a weak alderman in office who was already in their pocket,(Eugene Sawyer)Reassembled the machine and handily defeated the idiot by running Daley. If and when Daley decides to step down, this city will be up for grabs. At that time if the Hispanics have the largest voting block, they will be able to place one of their own in office. But it's my opinion that it's Daley's job until he no longer wants it.

The Illinois State statute 5 ILCS 315/14 (30 ILCS 805/8.30 new) says that, with the issue of residency rules regarding municipalities over 1 mil., it cannot be brought to the bargaining table whatsoever. Our Collective Bargaining Unit (FOP) hands were always tied on this one during contract negotiations. We couldn't talk about it and the City Elected Officials cannot amend state laws. But, someone did go to State Senator John Millner and House Rep. Dan Brady and lobbied for them to introduce a bill to amend that statute so we could bring it to the barganing table. In late January of 2006, SB2586 and HB4967 were introduced. Each bill is in it's respective Rules' Committee. The committees were off for the summer and will be reconvening in the comming weeks. If these bills pass and the law gets amended than our CBU (FOP) can bring the issue to the table of a future contract negotiation. It's one small step in lifting the rule. So right now the residency rule is not on the FOPs table. The law first has to be changed/amended. Question is...will the bill pass? Who needs to be sure that it does? What about the other City departments. Will they jump on the bandwagon if needed? Chances are it won't pass since the rest of the state legislators can care less about Chicago issues.

Two things strike me and no one is paying any attention to them.

1. Pension- if you are under 55 you should vote for whomever fully funds the pension fund. It has 18 to 24 years left for all you youngsters out there. Don't tell me that is guaranteed by the state, etc. Ask those on public pension who worked for Orange County years ago - what is the percentage of their pension they are receiving? Just forget about race and ethnicity and vote for your pension.
2. Residency will never be lifted and forget about it. Work on some Health Care issues as the city will pick up nothing as of 2013 for retirees.
Just an old man's two cents.

Please forgive for being off topic...

Tonight the waves of blue were not only on Lake Michigan, but along the lakefront in the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park. As one little boy said, "There are policemen as far as you can see!"

For those of you who were there, you made us proud to be CPD.

To see several buildings in the loop either lighted in blue or with their windows lit up to spell "CPD" was quite a sight. The checkerboard at the top of one building was great.

That was only topped by seeing Dennis Farina return to his roots to read a list of the fallen with out fanfare or credit and to overhear Patrick Fitzgerald say that he doesn't normally do things like this, but he couldn't say no when asked to read names. (Also said he was going back to the office to work some more…hmmm)

Overall, a great night and a terrific tribute to the men and women in blue who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Let’s hope we don’t have to add any more names to the wall in our lifetime.

STAY SAFE!

SCC- This is a serious question and not a grade-school insult- Is Luis Gutierrez gay? Being from the East Coast, I followed the saga of Governor McGreevy of New Jersey, who resigned after coming out of the closet. He really quit because he was facing an inquiry into the hiring of his gay lover to the #3 post in the state. He had a beautiful wife and a baby-but I had heard very loud rumors from the NJ State Troopers I keep in touch with a month after he took office that he was gay. I have also heard rumors about Gutierrez-and think he gives off the same kind of appearance as McGreevy did. Anyone heard anything? I'm not making a statement about being gay-but living that huge of a lie because you're afraid to be yourself means you'll lie about anything to anyone.

To add onto 025 copper said and to those who said when we took this job we knew what we were getting into (i.e. residency rule), the job and world climate have changed. It has changed even as recently is the last year or so. The guys that were hired in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s did not have to pay 300k+ for a 2 bedroom single family. Gasoline wasn't $3/gal. Milk was a lot cheaper. Kids school tuition, etc. Plus the old timers didn't get put on straight midnights either because of low senority, they rotated. Medical was free back then too. Sure we make a lot more in salary but does it go as far? I'm not saying that they didn't go through their troubles without a union at all. How many could tell you about the days when you could get dumped without any recourse because there was no FOP. I'm just saying things are dramatically different now than when many of us took this job and understood the requirements at that time. The playing field changed and some of us just want a chance to look at other options like living somewhere outside the city if that could benefit us. Maybe it won't be feasible but at least we have the choice.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE ACT NOW!!
Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D) of Austin, Texas filed a discharge petition (H. Res. 987) to force an immediate vote on the "Social Security Fairness Act," H.R. 147. The petition is a device that would break the House leadership's blockade of H.R. 147 and bring the bill out of subcommittee and onto the House floor for a vote. In order for the discharge petition to be successful and force a vote on this vital legislation, it needs at least 218 signatures.
The "Social Security Fairness Act" has been bottled up in a subcommittee since it was introduced in January 2005, despite garnering the support of 323 co-sponsors. After 20 years of efforts, we finally have the opportunity to repeal two unjust offsets that drastically cut public safety officers' Social Security benefits.
Call your Representative today and urge them to sign Congressman Doggett's discharge petition. You can call your House member toll-free through the U.S. Capital switchboard 1-866-327-8670.
We only have two weeks to get this done! Please act TODAY! CALL 1-866-327-8670
