Social Security Bill

Via more than a few e-mails and the Lieutenant's Association website:
  • Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D) of Austin, Texas filed a discharge petition (H. Res. 987) to force an immediate vote on the "Social Security Fairness Act," H.R. 147. The petition is a device that would break the House leadership's blockade of H.R. 147 and bring the bill out of subcommittee and onto the House floor for a vote. In order for the discharge petition to be successful and force a vote on this vital legislation, it needs at least 218 signatures.

The "Social Security Fairness Act" has been bottled up in a subcommittee since it was introduced in January 2005, despite garnering the support of 323 co-sponsors. After 20 years of efforts, we finally have the opportunity to repeal two unjust offsets that drastically cut public safety officers' Social Security benefits.

This bill would restore lost benefits that Rostenkowski screwed Public Employees out of. Someone with an accounting degree is more than welcome to point out the specifics of the legislation to our readers. It can't hurt to be informed.

Is it bad that we aren't part of the Social Sec experiment? Ok, we don't get bene's as of now, but we are also not paying into to it.

As a Gen Xer, i say f-it! I'll NEVER see the end results after all you boomers suck it dry, so why should i pay even more taxes for nothing?

To: Is it bad that we aren't part of the Social Sec experiment?

Did you ever have a job in private industry before being a government employee? Did you ever have side job paying into Social Security? While then you are part of the great experiment.

All we are asking for is the BENEFITS WE HAVE PAID FOR!

As for contacting congressmen, it might be better to talk to their staff. If they are going to get a government pension, then they have as much to gain as we do and they can get at the congressman.

Actually, I think that people hired after 1986 have been paying into social security in addition to the pension. Rosty's bill basically said that if you are a government employee, including municipal employees, that because you have a gov't pension that if and when you draw social security that you are only entitled to 1/2 of what you would get otherwise. That's the impact - whether you personally think SS is a farce now or later is not the issue.

As someone who paid into it from age 16 to 32, I would like to see some of my money back.

Here in Mass. we don't pay into it, many of us did for some time.

If you retire from Policing and then go to work in the private sector after, you will pay int it and have significantly impacted SS payments.

Hey, 02:19:58, I hope you collect what you paid for; all we want is what we paid for. Did you know that private pensions are not affected by Rosty's "windfall" law.

Which makes one think, how arrogant, Rosty was surrounded by government employees, cuts benefits they paid for, and thinks that no one will blow the whistle on his dirty little game with the Congressional Post Office.

When the vote is taken, SCC should post the names and the yeas and nays of our senators and congressmen.

We need someone with political know how to find out who is and who is not in favor of this bill in regard to our representation here in Illinois. I didnt pay enough in to have it be a big issue but there are plenty of people who came on the job later in life who paid in plenty and they should get their money. If pookie can get shot in the ass selling dope and then draw from the pot then taxpayers should also.

If you worked a job, paid into the system, and EARNED the benefits by doing so,How is that a windfall? no one should be penalized for having more than one retirement option just because one of those options is a government pension. What about people with private pensions? How is it less of a windfall for them? This was just a sneaky way to help aleviate the soc.security shortfall they knew was coming because they raided the fund time and time again both Democrat and Republican.(But mostly Dems.) I doubt that we'll ever see the proper amount of money we're owed.

I've paid well into SS before I came on this job and have earned my 40 credits....it's a shame that I cannot benefit from what I have contributed because of the fat cats in WASH who jilt the American worker. They are so concerned about the illegals in this country they can't see beyond the average US citizen who are trying to make ends meet or try to make their golden years better. Why can't I get what I fully deserve...I put enough into SS and I paid towards my pension. What I will bring home in retirement is a paltry sum compared to our legislatures who are only concerned about themselves, those with $$, or those who have nothing, don't contribute to the economy and continue to take advantage of every handout there is.

9/21 2:24 GREAT POST!

Since 1899, WE have educated all to many of them in science, technology, and use of modern media at OUR universities and they now use their oil money to purchase OUR technology, scientific advancemnts, and communications devices to use as weapons against US. WE have allowed Millions of them to migrate (legally and illegally) into the communities of the free world, where they have refused to assimilate into local society or culture, and now they cluster and fester, as separate enclaves, having NO loyalties to the Free and Democratic Nations, or local communities in which they reside.
I believe that they ARE "The Enemy Within".

Don't worry about the Moslem Militias of Southern Lebanon; they can't touch us.
Worry about the Moslem Militias of Oak Lawn, Albany Park, or Rogers Park & Skokie! They ARE already here!

As with the State of California, there is an "Earthquake" coming that will destroy many of US. We just don't know when.

Still don't believe Social Security is on the ballot this November?

In an interview published today in The Wall Street Journal (sub.req.), President Bush told editorial page editor Paul Gigot that next year he plans on partially phasing out Social Security and replacing it with private accounts, and that he thinks he can do it as long as the Republicans retain control of Congress, which he thinks they will.

Boomers Fleece Generation X with Social Security

Generation Xers and Gen-Yers like me have a hard time showing interest in what goes on in Washington. But we had better end our apathy -- and soon -- or we'll spend the rest of our lives paying for it. Members of the generation that came before us -- the Baby Boomers -- are trying to pull a scam under the guise of "protecting" Social Security. If they succeed, we -- and our children -- will be the poorer for it.
.......
But things will change in the next decade, when the Boomers will retire and start collecting benefits. By 2016, so many people will be drawing Social Security that the money needed to cover benefits will be more than what we Gen-X/Y workers will be paying in taxes. Fortunately, the program will be able to cash in the bonds that it's now buying, and will use the repaid principle and interest to keep up the benefits.
..........
However, that can only support Social Security for a few more decades. The bonds will all be cashed in by 2038, just as we Gen-Xers (whose Social Security tax money will purchase many of those bonds and whose federal tax money will pay them off) approach retirement age. So, just as we're about to collect Social Security, there will be nothing left in the Social Security storehouse for us to collect.

9/22/2006 01:27:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ever since we Gen-X/Yers began working, we've paid 12.4 percent of our earnings to Social Security -- half taken through the "FICA" tax on our paycheck and half through the payroll tax. In the coming years, Congress likely will increase that rate to more than 17 percent to delay the 2038 catastrophe. What is more, the Medicare tax (which is now a mere 2.9 percent) will increase because that program faces an even worse crisis than Social Security.

In contrast, the Boomers will get a bargain. When they entered the workforce in the late 1960s, they paid only 6.5 percent of their earnings to Social Security and nothing to Medicare. For about half of their working years, the Boomers paid 10 percent or less to Social Security and less than 1.25 percent to Medicare. Only from 1990 on, when the Boomers had earned paychecks for a quarter-century, did they start paying 12.4 percent to Social Security and 2.9 percent to Medicare -- the same percentage we Gen-X/Yers have paid our whole lives.

That's the Boomers' bargain: They've paid less of their earnings into Social Security than we Gen-X/Yers, yet they'll receive more in benefits than we will and we'll pick up the tab. And when we retire, there will be no money saved in Social Security to pay for our retirement, unless we pull the same scam on our children that the Boomers are pulling on us.

FDR designed Soc Security where it would be fiscally healthy and solvent for generations to come. After WWII, The executive and legislative branches of government began pilfering funds from soc.security leaving IOU's. THIS is why we have the deficit we have now. It's also the reason politicians like Bush want to eliminate it. They don't want to pay back the money they owe the American worker.
