- I don't believe Jemelle Lloyd did it. And I don't think Chicago Police officers, who arrested him Oct. 27 for assault of a man in the Hyde Park community, had enough cause to charge him with attempted robbery and assault. Nonetheless, Lloyd, who turns 18 on Monday, could end up in the criminal justice system.
Um, Mary? You state in your column, your very own column, about 11 paragraphs down, that University of Chicago police detained and arrested him. University of Chicago police are not Chicago Police. In fact, there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 or more separate police agencies operating within City limits. Most of them have agreements to utilize CPD facilities for transport to Cook County Courts. But they aren't CPD. And CPD doesn't charge people with crimes - State's Attorneys do. On sworn complaints. And we'd be surprised if any CPD officer's signature appeared on any of the complaints. And the fact that Lloyd might end up in the criminal justice system before he's 18 shouldn't be a surprise - at 17 you go to County Jail as an adult in this state.
- On Oct. 27, Lloyd, 17, shouldn't have even been in Hyde Park.
So you're starting out of the box saying Lloyd shouldn't have been where he was? Like he was disobeying mom's rules? You're starting to bury this kid already Mary.
- A University of Chicago cop gave a Chicago Police officer a description of all six suspects and said they ran into a park at 5450 S. Kenwood, where they were detained and taken to the University of Chicago police station at 55th and Ellis.
Thank god you aren't an attorney Mary. Prosecuting, you'd lose this case on a motion. As the Defense, this kid would go to the chair - and you'd still claim it was everyone's fault but yours and his. Let's try to get your story straight next time before you go around the bend painting all police as evil, racist, railroading sons of bitches, eh?

The Chief of Police at UC is still Africam American correct. Is the victim non African American, and a victim of Africam Americam racism as many of the assaults last year were, if its whitey commiting these crimes against African Americans its automatically racism.
Technically you may be correct when you say University of Chicago Police are not CPD but the reality is that 50% or better of all UCPD officers on the street at any time are off-duty CPD officers. Several of their supervisors are also off-duty CPD supervisors. Saying that UCPD is not the same as CPD is generally a distinction without a difference because even the non-CPD officers are state certified and attended either the Metro-Academy or the downstate Police Institute in Champaign. Some are also suburban officers, sherrif's police, or Metra P.O.'s. Former ADS Rudy Nimocks is still the Director of their department.
Do you expect anything better?
The Tribune today has an article in the Metro section in regards to poor police service and rampant crime in 007. Maybe someone should inform the 1st Watch, Watch Commander she should be locking up these individuals that have warrants instead of giving grief to Officers that arrest these Officers. Also maybe herself and her desk crew should get rid of that hater mentality, and outside units would be willing to do some Police work in 007.

#1 Victim was robbed.
#2 Crime was observed by UIC P.O. who made identification.
#3 Individual who drove alledged offenders to scene is co-operating with police and gave statement indicating that the charged offenders talked about committing a crime.
#4 The SAO would of never approved felony charges unless they believed they had a winning case.
Good to know the U of C Pd had enough PC to stop him, and CPD had enough to process him and the W/C had enough to sign off on it and the W/C of 51/Wentworth had enough to sign off and take him.

No surprise there, 007 is probably the worst shit hole I ever spent time in, thank god I only got detailed there for a few months. Everyone who fucks up around the city gets dumped there, and I mean the supervisors. Most of the guys working there where hard charging good police. That desk crew is another story, theres nothing like those angry females on 3rd watch. "Joe", is also a different animal there- "They knows their rights"
Jemell Lloyd was right there when all the offenders were arrested. He goes to school with the other offenders. He was identified by the black victim as one of the offenders. The other offenders admitted to the crime and said Lloyd was with them too. Lloyd is the only adult in the group. Mary Mitchell knows the juveniles will get no time for this, so she only writes about poor Jemell Lloyd. Why don't you talk to the innocent black victim Mary. Ask the victim if race was involved in this arrest.
i believe its called libel when a columnist knowingly misrepresents the facts. In fact the current case involving a state supreme court justice hinges on just such statements made by a newspaper columnist, any of you all lawyers on the job feel like trying the westside lottery against mitchell and the sun times?

As Malcolm and Coldtype will tell you, this kid was arrested because he is black. Never mind that the other 5 kids he was with were planning a robbery on the drive to UofC...that poor kid was just going to get dropped off at the library! Then he saw, to his horror, what his friends had said they had planned to do, and were following through, and he quickly ran over to tell them to stop(NOT to help in the robbery). He then ran from the police with them all the while telling his friends what a bad thing they had done! (as opposed to not taking the "let's go rob some people in Hyde Park trip" in the first place) In reality- Bottom line: Mary is a racist. Not only against white people, but against black people. The more Sharpton, JJacksons , Mitchel et al are embraced by the black communitty, the longer the communitty will be kept fatherless, poor, and in prison. It would take real bravery for her to look at this and ask where this kid went wrong...friends...family...school...but she is a racist and chooses her own selfish needs (sell papers by claiming racism) over helping the communitty she has long turned her back on. Shame on you Mary.

Mary Mitchell is decent enough to answer your emails if you write her. A lot of Sun Times personalities will not.
It is my perception, over the years, that her greatest weakness as a journalist is that she will not make the effort to get the other side of a story, or make the effort to find and interview the other parties involved. I once asked her why she didn't make an attempt to interview more than one party and hear all sides of a story, which is something a basic Journalism 101 high school editor would routinely do, before publishing. The other parties, the police had a right to be heard if they were being called out in a newspaper article. She agreed that they should, but believed her contact with news affairs, rather than the actual officers, was sufficient.
I don't know what her background is, but it probably didn't involve hard news reporting, where you have to check facts and verify things. What she is doing is strictly an opinion piece, and should be taken as such. As an opinion piece, she can say what she wants.
Her work is basically lazy journalism and, ethically, it wouldn't stand the scrutiny of a freshman college communications instructor at Columbia College.
Don't get worked up about it. The truth comes out eventually.

Hey Lefty...my comments about Coldtype and Malcolm (and the reason they've been silent on this post) originated on the "Losing with Grace" thread. You may come to a different conclusion than I have, but I think given the choice of going to a "police are racist" rally for an hour, or tutoring a young black student every week, both Malcolm and Coldtype would go to the rally. Why? Because they don't really want to change the future for blacks, they just want to be able to blame every failure in the black communitty on someone else. It is that kind of racism that hurts the black communitty.

True story about our favorite writer MM. About 5/7 years ago Mary was car jacked on her way home I believe it was in 15th or 25th District. Low and behold this becomes a "heater case". Well our fine officers locate the vehicle and offender. End result offender was released w/out charging because Mary did not want to send another male black to jail! UH he is not just another male black, he is the person who car jacked you with a gun. He is an offender period regardless of race!
