Let the Games Begin!

  • The chairman of the City Council's Black Caucus is threatening to embarrass Chicago with the U.S. Olympic Committee -- and turn Mayor Daley's Olympic dream into a nightmare -- if an Olympic-size swimming pool is not included in plans for a new Westinghouse High School.

Ald. Ed Smith (28th) said he stormed out of a meeting this week with Montel Gayles, executive director of the Daley-chaired Public Building Commission, after Gayles told West Side community leaders an Olympic pool was not part of the plan.

There's already a couple of existing Olympic sized pools around the Chicago area and more than a couple of them are more than adequate to handle the crowds should we be unfortunate enough to get the Games. But as ever in Chicago, it's about who can get the biggest slices of the pie and taxpayers be damned. Watch for a whole bunch more of this political grandstanding across the city in the coming months.

Excellent post..if and when the US Olympic committee realizes the cost of doing business in Chicago (the "cost of corruption", i.e., dealing with the pols, labor, etc.), they wil RUN, not walk, to LA....

Its about time. You cops like to block the streets with your cars all the time. We see you all standing around with your hands in your pockets. Go S and S tow those cars. Those fat-ass cops can't catch you anyway. They only solve 10% of all the crimes committed.

This is the kinda B.S. that will embarass us on the world stage again, and again, and again, and again. We are the laughingstock of the world and when we try to legitimize ourselves then greedy, self-serving, grabasstic, goofs foul it up each and every time. We are and always be portrayed as a mobbed up,corrupt, den of theives, it is truly sad that the so-called leaders of our city cannot come together once to work for the common good of our city instead of trying to see "what's in it for me".

In case there is any doubt as to whether or not Chicago is going to get the Olympics, take a close look around the city. Properties that have stood vacant for decades in 010 on Douglas Boulevard are suddenly getting a face lift. There are more Polish contractors on Douglas in the day time than I've ever seen before. Also, anyone else notice how Washington Park is already getting "spruced up"?
Here's the forecast boys and girls...get a few friends together and buy an old building somewhere near the Olympic path...sit on it and watch the money flow in.

About the incident in 019 district. from what I know and from what I have heard. 2 tac guys were conducting a pursuit. The car had two offenders and did not want to stop but finally stopped due to the simple fact that it had been trapped at the intersection of Fullerton & Western by a turning truck. At that time the officers approached the vehicle one on the drivers side the other on the pass. side. The tac guy on the driver side approached the open window with his gun drawn. The driver then decided to make a u turn and slammed on the gas while grabbing the officers gun and sending him flying to the ground the officer sustained a broken hand where he was later put in a cast. The other tac guy was in the process of opening the door when this occured and when he saw that the offender grabbed the other officers gun he then managed to jump in the moving vehicle as they tried to escape. Im not sure in detail what happened after that i know the officer in the vehicle began to fight the two offenders while the car was moving and they traveled about 3 blocks before the car actually stopped and in the process one bad guy and one tac guy managed to get oc sprayed.

SCC, would you please elaborate on "the incident" in 019? Apparently, from what I'm reading here, two officers made a stop of a car, and one officer was relieved of his weapon by the violator in his car, who drove off. What exactly happened, and why has it been ignored by you guys? Since it has been allowed to be posted, let's at least get the basic facts posted from some reliable source.

Embarrasing Daley is not a good idea. Ask Troutman and Miriam Santos!!
