From the Tribune -

Man shot inside police station

By Tonya Maxwell
Tribune staff reporter
Published January 22, 2007, 6:27 PM CST

Police shot and wounded a 48-year-old man after he drew a cocked gun in a South Side police station Monday afternoon, officials said.

Officers working in the front desk area of the Grand Crossing station near 70th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue saw the man enter the station about 4:25 p.m. and try to speak to an officer who was on the telephone, said Cmdr. John Franklin. He did not ask for the officer by name, Franklin said.

When the officer got off the telephone and asked the 48-year-old what he wanted, the man drew a revolver with a cocked hammer, Franklin said.

At that point, the uniformed officer—who was not assigned to that station—shouted for everyone to take cover, Franklin said. Two officers fired several shots at the man, hitting him once in the left shoulder, Franklin said. After being handcuffed, the man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, officials said. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

No officers were hurt, and the man did not fire the revolver, officials said.

Chicago Police spokesman Pat Camden said there was no indication that the man knew the officer with whom he tried to speak. Charges are pending, he added.

"Two officers fired several shots at the man, hitting him once in the shoulder". TWO OFFICERS...SEVERAL SHOTS...ONCE IN THE SHOULDER...all I can say is WOW!!! This had to be at close range if it all happen at the desk. No wonder the department is offering 100 free rounds to practice.

This has happened twice in the first district. When are they going to put glass dividing the officers and the public like they have in the suburbs? Never because then we won't be able to afford all those pretty planters on Cicero Ave.

If you wanna see what would happen, you're gonna have to wait till after March because the majority of the 007th and 011th district slick boys will be on furlough. Being as elite as you can be with 2 years on, I'd say the true battle will be who will get a 5b furlogh.

WOW! ... No shit.. I'm not making this up ... Sgt's had in-service trainin today and there was a meeting with Deputy Williams. He asked the Sgts. about what things could be improved in the department. I shit you not, one Sgt. said that he thinks that it is crazy that the desk crews are not protected with bullet-proof glass like all the suburban stations. His reply ... "No, No, we don't need that stuff. It will never happen. We run the streets not them"... I shit you not!.. I thought it was a ridiculous reply and then it happens just hours later. I'm not bashing Williams in any way. I think he is a great boss... but I lost a little respect for him when he gave the reply that he did. Bottom line.. stay safe, watch your back, because sometimes I wonder if the Department really holds our safety as the first priority (I think the bosses are more worried about numbers!)

yeah just great. because of the city's new bullshit policy that makes you lock your gun up in the few lockers that are in the station. now what would have happened to the copper that had locked up his gun and was at the desk dropn dope, using the computer, using the phone, dropping a tow case or whatever and the guy walks in and wants to kill the police. the city will tell you, the new stupid policy is for your safety when in fact they give a rats ass about you. they have now made you an unarmed target. a cop in harms way with no way to defend yourself or others.

how about all the coppers in the now new and improved processing areas. all unarmed with the bad guys locked in a room. lets say the bad guy or guys want to fuck you up or kill you with the use of a pen, pencil, knife or small gun hidden that was missed before entering the room. now the badguy is the only armed person in the room and all the coppers are now soon to be victims.

this shit has happended in 002, 007, 022 over the years with armed offenders entering the station with a death wish. i'm sure their is more incidents that i dont know about.

same with disarming us and putting us in harms way in certain court bldgs. if i'm the police, on duty/on the clock - give me the option. i'll choose to keep my duty weapon and stay alive and be able to protect myself and all those around me.

fucking city/dept and their stupid ass reckless politics and procedures.

how could the coppers involved in the shooting even hear what ole boy was saying over the rap music playing and all the himn and hawning going on from the 003rd district peeps. and i thought 002 desk was bad. yeesh

last comment. thank God the police are okay. good guys 1 bad guys 0

OFF TOPIC: It's interesting to read all the earlier posts of supposed "Bear fans" bashing the BEARS and predicting the Saints victory. So many negative cops. I knew the BEARS would win and know that they will beat the Colts too.. I used to work with a guy that was negative and angry about everything and spent half the tour yelling and bashing Grossman and the Bears. It's strange how a sport can make a man so angry. Enough to spend everyday thinking about it and turning on his supposed team. Funny, now he likes the Bears. I guess I should expect it, most cops spend the day complaining and being negative. DA BEARS!!!!!

You could call it... "When Hair Gels Collide!"

Great response from the SOS copper who was the initial target of the nutcase, and great backup from the 003rd Dist. Desk officer who actually wounded him! Thank the Lord no coppers were wounded in dealing with this guy. It truly pays to be alert, even when you're at the desk in your own Police Station. This could have played out very badly.

All this crap about parking and towing police cars... what a bunch of crap... PO’s should see the Sun Times for what they really are, a bunch of jag offs that will front off anyone for anything to sell a few bullshit papers. How about the breaks given to thousands of Sun Times drivers on 1st watch when they do what ever they want out there.... delivering papers is no big deal and nor should it be, however why drag the reputation of every man and woman in blue down into the dirt with the public that believe all this dung; all over some cop illegally parking...that’s a front page story worthy of full page color photo?????..Its not like anything else important is happening in this town or the world.... Give me a Break!!! Screw the Times, their drivers, reporters and the mama’s that shit tem out! ....................... Have a nice day!

What if he was just a depressed sociopath who wanted to commit "suicide by cop". Then on the flip side, he thought that the station was one of Fr. Pflagers gun turn in spots. Glad to see no one hurt. But only a shoulder shot? UUUGGHHHHHHHH! People, some could have done better with a super soaker!

Ah yes the safety of the Police Station. I know lets keep letting the Stew Bums and all this other homeless garbage hang out in stations though. You ever been in Area 1 on Midnights? The place reeks of nasty unshowered homeless garbage. Aren't there shelters for them? Why do they have to come into the station? Big time safety issue as well as an Air Quality issue.

Was at the shooting in 003, the sos guy was shooting on the move trying to get cover and alerting the desk crew that this dude had a gun, if it wasn't for the sos copper alerting the desk crew this might have been tragic. great job D.P.on being alert. Both coppers shot at the bad guy. Then the case report reflects that an I.O.D. report was generated by a p.o. slipping on the ice responding to the shooting, give me a break. great job D.P. from 003 and K.M. from s.o.s. Sorry guys the female coppers were doing their nails......

Great job to all the officers in 003. That day the gunman did not see SOS or the 3rd District, he just saw the police.

Also, great job to all the officers and supervisors who made sure the gunman could not attempt to harm anyone else, secured the crime scene and made sure everything was documented apporpriately. This helps with the possible law suit as mentioned earlier in the blog.

Also, hands up to the bosses who made sure the officers that shot and who were shaken up after witnessing that incident received the support they needed. Regardless of what kind of Robo cop you are, that is a very tasking experience!

you won't see bulletproof glass protecting the desk crew because it's a hell of a lot cheaper to pay the death benefits to your family than to install those things on 25 districts. think about it.

I've only been on the job for about 4 years, but I saw an awesome display of leadership Monday afternoon in 003 when the shit hit the fan at the desk. It was all over in seconds, with the goofball lying on the floor in obvious pain, the crime scene being sealed off, notifications being made, the bosses making sure the coppers directly involved were ok. The Commander, Watch Commander and the Tact Lt had everything togther. Two tact sgts took over the crime scene, taping everything up. We all wanted to do something, but everything that could have been done was already done. I can't think of a better job I've had, or a better place to work. Proud to be da police!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes it is true that Willaims said we don't need bullet proof partitions during the segeant's training, I was there also. He also said that the patrol division would never get rifles in the field. "We have specialized units for that." Yes but by the time they get there we will be counting the Officers on the ground. Before this department even starts to consider it, it will be at the cost of Officer's lives. This is by far the most poorly equiped department in the nation, where PC and bosses with no street experience dictate what the working police can do.

I see this story came and went. When the police are victims, it is the big story for 30 seconds. Let a copper park in frot of a fire hydrant trying to hurry to save some idiots life, the car gets towed, put on the front page of the paper, and the copper has to pay $200.00 to get the car out of the pound. That mother fucker will still be in there next Christmas if it was up to me.

Thats right, do your job and keep getting fucked.

I don't think it matters where the district is, all districts need bullet proof glass. I do recall a guy coming into the lilly white 1st district and doing the same thing.

At least in the areas of the ghetto, you have the real working police, so the bad guys will never have a chance. I'm glad it was not 018, 016 or 001. The story may have ended a little differently.

Now get your fat ass off the desk typing on this blog and go do a traffic accident report!
