Just What We Need - More Lawyers
Sounds like a tailor made program for what ails the Toddler and his 17% budget cuts:
- Illinois Senator Dick Durbin has a plan to help increase the number of public defenders and prosecutors in this country. He's sponsoring a bill that calls for the forgiveness of some of a student's law school debt when they graduate.
It's part of an experimental program, where $10,000 of student loans are forgiven each year, if the new attorney agrees to be a prosecutor or public defender for three years.
We had heard that the average law student graduates with something well over $80,000 in student loans. But your Ivy League top grads still aren't going to be joining the ranks of PD's or ASA's. They best and brightest will still be able to retire their debt in a few short years without government help, which is really as it should be.

Yeah when the starting salary of some of these sharks is upwards of $75000 a year....like they need help with loans. What about me, I know that I am just a public servant but I have about 15,000 in student load debt....can I get a play too?????

This is just another case of the politically connected, clout babies squeezing more money out of taxpayers. There are 1000's of attorneys that would kill to get a job with the county. It won't cost taxpayers anything. How about let's screen candidates better not just hire some guys cousin because he contribtes to the campaign fund of little dick!!!

This is a great idea. We need better ASAs. Yes, this will not intice NU, UofC, Harv, Yale, or any of the other top 20 schools. But, maybe this will intice some mid-level scholars. New blood to shake out the inept, scared, and political top heavy system.
According to a Assistant Corp Council. A new lawyer out of Harvard or Yale or George Washington (DC)Law are looking at 175-200K a year. With the top of the class looking at the 225-250K plus benefits and signing bonuses.
Now just why would someone take a job with the Corp Council or States Attorney or Public Defenders offices if they did that well?
