Minnesota - Liberal Utopia

Minnesota holds the distinction of a number of political oddities. It was the only state to go for Walter Mondale in the 1984 election. They elected Jesse Ventura to the governor's seat for a very entertaining term. They recently sent the first muslim to Congress who has made it his mission to stop all profiling of suspicious individuals who praise Osama bin Laden, sit in the seats known to have been occupied by 9/11 hijackers and refuse to follow lawful instructions from flight crews.

Now they are trying to remove your right to be a decent citizen:
  • CAMBRIDGE, Minn. -- A farmer who chased down a thief and held him at gunpoint until authorities arrived now faces a more serious charge than the thief himself.

Kenneth Englund, 74, was charged with second-degree assault, a felony. The thief, who the sheriff said admitted stealing about $5 worth of gasoline from Englund's neighbor, was charged with misdemeanor theft.

Sheriff Mike Ammend said people can't take the law into their own hands, and that Englund's actions were ''an invitation to a shootout. There's so many things that could have gone wrong.''
Someone really ought to take this jackass sheriff to school. Englund's actions were "an invitation to a shootout"? What about the actions of the thief? What a tool. Nice way to discourage people from looking out for their neighbors. We really hope the voters soon make this bumbling Barney Fife unemployable in Cambridge. We can hardly believe there is a state in the union that doesn't have a right to "citizen's arrest."

Though it is amusing that a 74 year old farmer chased down the thief. Way to go old timer.

America is ruined. In the history books they will say "they lost it when common sense went out the window".

What is going on? Everyone can sue. Terrorist can't be called out on it. Criminals get the benifit of the doubt in the media and courts.

Sorry, SCC, although I don't think the senior citizen should have been charged with a FELONY, it just wasn't worth chasing someone down the street with a handgun over a theft of $5.00 of gasoline. Ask yourself this...if one of US did that, and this incident went south, would the Dept. think we did a smart thing, or a dumb thing? Would it be worth it to see someone lose their life over $5.00 of gas?
Read your first post about "property" being replaced (Bears parade). While I can certainly understand the average citizen's frustration over seeing a thief get away with their property, or their friend's or neighbor's property, you have to look at the whole situation. What's $5.00 of gas now, a little more than 2 GALLONS? I think most reasonable people would agree the old man used poor judgement.

...And lest we forget, Jesse Ventura ran, I believe, as a REPUBLICAN in Minnesota! So much for being "liberal!" His campaign
strategy was "tough, honest, no nonsense" leadership, highly espoused Republican themes.
And a bar fewer and fewer are able to reach, either Dem OR repub.

We must stop this gun violence! A national ban will work. If one is caught with a FIREARM than his property should be confiscated by the state. If you are an alien (resident or illegal) same as above applies plus deportation. The U.S. debt would be gone in a few years.

They should ban all Army-Style weapons(Ar-15,M14,FNFAL). If you really want one join the military get shipped to Iraq and shoot all you want. Or go play Golf!

The only thing the farmer did wrong was that he didn't shoot the guy in the ass. $5 bucks of stolen gasoline, I would say, is worth at least a cap in the ass. What ever happened to protection of life, liberty, and PROPERTY.

To "the view"

Addressing your points last to first, Ventura ran as an independent and defeated both democrat and republican contenders. Jesse runs more to the libertarian side of things - "mind your own business and I'll mind mine" kind of thing. All well and good.

As to the old man chasing someone down the street with a handgun, isn't that what we police officers do every day? And for what? Sometimes, it's as little as a $5 bag of weed or maybe a verbal assault. By your thinking, we should all just stop doing it? Sure, the old man wasn't the police, but believe us, in Cambridge, Minnesota, you're probably 10 or 20 minutes from any sort of police response.

A good citizen is just supposed to close his eyes and say "too bad neighbor" because some punk thinks it's ok to steal what isn't his? Citizenship comes with many obligations. And in the more rural parts of the nation, those obligations are more than just watching someone steal your stuff or your neighbor's stuff. Just because you are willing to forgo your responsibilities doesn't mean the rest of us are or this old man was. Your attitude is exactly why we have so many problems nowadays.

If the old man was beating this perp at gunpoint following the theft, then yeah, charge him. But the article doesn't say anything like that. And we're sure the old man didn't know what the goof was stealing when he started to chase him. Neither do most cops when they start the dimebag foot chase. But failing to take action is the bigger sin in our eyes.

TO: 2/04/2007 07:57:30 AM,

What kind of asshat logic is that? Why don't you go to your local beerhall and start a putshe, next I suppose you'll endorse labor camps and national expansion through annexing Canada and Mexico. It's so simple it can't work, punish the F@#$ups! CSA,burglary, arson, capitol offenses along with homicide. No ifs, no buts, just get on with it. Enough bullshit already. I can't believe I spent eight years in the Army protecting a jackass like you.......go move to France!

SCC you said Citizenship comes with obligations? I totally agree with you!

Then I believe you would agree that their are consequences for your actions.

This country has laws. Laws are meant to keep the citizenry in line.

Many people here don't realize it, but Minnesota, especially around the twin cities is a liberal state. There is a large Chicago street gang presence in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and many of our gangs run dope there, and recruit a lot of their whores from there. Many of the Swedes and Norwegians up there have their heads up their tail pipes socially and politically, and especially when iut comes to our criminals and gang bangers.

I've spent a significant amount of time in both Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.

I, like many people, thought that the northern rural areas were full of "Andy Griffith" types - strong silent types who were conservative folks. I thought I'd meet people who were committed to God, Mother and Country. People who didn't like big government and who voted conservative.

Man was I wrong. It is not like at all anymore.

I think that it was the influx of cable TV in the late 70's that began the Mainstream Media's brainwashing. So many farmers and their children started buying into the LibTard agenda that our TV networks put out that now many of the northern areas are turning Liberal. Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Dakotas are home to some of the most liberal goofs that the nation has ever seen.

Here is a breakdown on the issues of all of Minnesota's "leaders"

You do the math.

This Sheriff sounds like he'd be a perfect candidate for our next superintendent. Even if was only $5 worth of gas, it's $5 that this victim had to work for. I agree with the earlier post, should've shot him in the ass.

Well, SCC, you and I will just have to agree to disagree. And if so many Police Officers truly believe that the old man was justified to "shoot that thief in the ass" over $5.00 of gas, why is it that Police officers rarely shoot people who flee from stolen cars, fleeing burglars, shoplifters, etc? Because we all know that there are consequences for excessive force, or what is perceived to be excessive force. And I don't think anyone here is willing to lose their home, and everything they've worked for, to apprehend some whacked out/desperate punk over $5.00 of gas, or whatever that can be so easily replaced.

Some police officers (if in fact they are police officers - this is an open board) are given to talking out their asses. CPD rarely shoots people for dozens of reasons. We don't think CPD shoots 50 people a year and we process something over a few hundred thousand people through the district lockups every year.

The old man chased and held a thief at gun point for a crime committed in his presence. Why is that a problem? What on earth would you have a 74 year old man do who took the time to chase someone who was stealing from his neighbors? Put him in some sort of restraining hold? Wrestle away his wallet? Breath heavily on him? No, you have him hold the suspect at bay until police help arrives and if that happens to be at gun point, so be it. This is a ridiculous situation.

We can name dozens of off duty coppers who chased and held burglars, purse snatchers, chain snatchers, half a dozen rapists, a peeping tom and one murderer at gunpoint until back up arrived, and at least two of them took place in jurisdictions not Chicago. When you are miles from police assistance, citizens should be able to keep and bear arms and be able to use them to assit in law enforcement activity as long as they don't go overboard.

We have yet to see where this 74 year old farmer was out of line.

Like I said, we can agree to disagree. What if that old man had met resistance? He would not have been justified to shoot the thief.
If the thief took the old man's gun, now he has the opportunity to become a violent criminal. Given the totality of the situation, it just wasn't worth it. The old man could have wound up a homicide VICTIM, all over $5.00 worth of gas.
Why do you think we carry tazers now? Because the gun is no longer a deterrent in itself. A lot of these whacked out, strung out opportunists actually WANT to have deadly force used against them. If they survive, they win in court. And we all know or have dealt with repeat offenders/drug addicts who really don't care day to day if they live or die; they live simply to score dope, and stay high. Again, I simply say you have to look at the totality of the situation. Do you want to have your assets added up by the Corp. Counsel for something like this?
I think we all know the answer to THAT.

I agree with you 100%. Lets say the perp decided to kick the old mans ass to make good his escape. If not for the gun he would have. Kudoos to the old guy he'd be a better P.O. than the sherrif that charge him.

If you start a defense fund for the old guy, name the bank, I'll contribute. Maybe the NRA would.
