More Predictions
We hate to be pessimists about this job, but it's headed downhill in a hurry with no bottom in sight. Morale is at an all time low, manpower in the Districts is ridiculously understaffed, and no one wants to even take this job. A few observations and predictions:
- You think it's bad now? Wait until the latest scandal breaks and the SOS disaster heads to trial. You ain't seen nothing yet.
- Specialized units, tact/gangs, mission and saturation teams are going to find it even harder to recruit bodies as unrealistic expectations and more mission goofiness (wolfpacks?) are stacked on them - and the summer silly season is just beginning.
- Numerous aldercreatures were complaining about the lack of traffic enforcement? If the cameras actually do make it to 280 more beat cars, the only traffic activity you're going to see is the seat belt missions.
- Contract negotiations are coming - anyone want to bet not only will very little be happening for the next year and a half, we'll get screwed something fierce when we finally get a contract sometime in 2009.
- The new Superintendent will be more of the same political shenanigans.
Might we be mistaken on any of the above? We doubt it. Unless something overly dramatic happens, this is going to be a very bad couple of years.

excellent observations, scc....methinks that most po's with some sense will avoid sepcialized units, tact, and gangs; most everyone with any sense will (not stop working), but will work at the minimum, taking reports, responding to calls, etc.; it's time, I think, for the officers and FOP to finally get together....

This afternoon, a Queens Co. grand jury returned sealed indictments againt three of the five working coppers in the justifiable shooting of Sean Bell.
Morale is not-existent in the NYPD. Sounds like the same for the Chicago P.D.
The cowardly politicians refuse to stand up to the likes of Sharpton.
The public will not even detect a pulse in those of us that can't jump ship. Twenty and out! F*ck 'em!
Its been said before: nothing is going to change unless we're willing to get "bloody".

You also forgot to mention that the City of Chicago takes forever to pay their bills that are a " F.O.P. Contractual Obligation" and our benefit.
For example: I have waited over 8 months to get my damn tuition reimbursement check. I even filed a grievance over it. When the City pulls shit like this, what the hell makes them think that I want to go out and do anything for this God forsaken city! I'm very pissed off as it is!
This would NOT be tolerated in the Business world! The businesses would be quick to hit you up for late fees and such.
I know for a fact that there are a bunch of people waiting for their tuition reimbursement checks.
If the City of Chicago, wants College educated Officers then this is their consequence.
Pay your damn bills in a reasonable amount of time and quit screwing over your employeees!
Amen to the prediction about the specialize units. As a guy who came on tact to do policework, I was very unhappy to see just what they expected from tact teams. I thought you'd be working together as teams on targeting the biggest problems in the district. Turns out there is no working as teams because each car has to produce so every car begins their tour hunting an easy cb number instead of working together for one good cb. I was upset at first but then I realized that hey if this is the game the bosses want well then fine the easier the head the better why should I lose sleep and worry about what i knew was bad policing policies. DOPW and SUb's all the way for me until this department grows it's balls back again.
Our Dental Program SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

When I have talked to the older guys that were around in ...last year 92? when there was no bids for watches and everybody rotated, and those before them who were at the whim of the bosses and would get bounced from group to group so that they could never stay where they wanted or those who had just the opposite experience, one thing is clear......It seemed the solidarity between the officers..the so called thin blue line...was there. There were watch parties, people backing eachother up, court that everyone could count on (even though the salary was shit), and bosses that were not afraid of their own shadows (at least a majority. This has all changed. I do not advocate going back to roatating shifts because I have done that prior to comig on, but the team aspect isn't bad. The department had been talking about doing the team thing in patrol for at least the last 5 years and I have not seen it in the districts. It seems they are attempting to implement it by the TRU unit. For those of you giving these guys and girls shit, fuck off. That is a shitty job. It's an in uniform old tactical team. At least we used to get the gun and gone, early release from "some" details (most sucked or me, but others on my team liked them), the unrestricted movement and overtime, the hour on the end unless you were on something, and the early duck when you needed. They don't. I keep hearing shit on this sight from the jealous and the stupid who cry that those guys go to church or go home for Christmas dinner and shit like that. Do me a favor and quit you little narc pussy motherfuckers. Sorry, that has always bothered me aboout this site. Coppers being petty and trying to rat on other coppers publicly, but not having the balls to actually make the compaint they are bound by orders to make. You want to beef about wrong doing or others having and you not, do it the legit way. Don't be a pussy and hide behind an anonymous blog post. Put your fucking namein on a CR# like you are required to do by Rules and Regs and G.O.'s.
Having vented enough and gone off on a tangent, I get back to my original thought...
I think the team concept is great. Everyone here and on the street does nothing but bitch about the bosses, the dogasses, or the people with phone calls. Now there is a way to see veerybody, on a grand scale, as they are. Not to mention, the bringing back of loyalty, respect, and comradery. Anyone who has ever been on a tact/gang team can probably see this. The Sgt has say 10 people. That team is that Sgt's responsability. If the team is a bunch of dogs, the lT,Capt, C/O etc... knows who to look for. Everybody on the teams aready knws...That is the dog team, the CR team, the good team, etc... It dos what everybody says, but backtracks on. It makes the supervisors take responability for their people. Everybody knows there wil be the clout team too, but we are in Chicago. As far as the contract, we're srewed just like every year since I came on. But then again, i didn't start at $7,400 with no overtime....

My prediction is that when a 9-11 occurs in Chicago,the powers that be will demand more seatbelt missions and curfews.Sarcastic humor aside,the powers that be,do not give a f*%k what happens out in the streets..They only care when it affects their little kingdoms/harems that they have set up for themselves.They would fight tooth and nail over the color of their unmarked take-home car and their parking spot at 35th&Michigan.

More traffic stops? If they run you can't chase. The first time they see a chase on that little camera they will sh*t. The city should just buy 6 or 4 cylinder cars, you can't chase so you don't need the power. (it will save the city gas money)

As a citizen, I take great joy and satifaction in knowing that the CPD brass is the very best and the brightest. Mayor Daley would never tolerate nepotism and incompetent political hacks. It's all legi--moreso than ever before! Morale must be at an all-time high.

The real story on the chase in 5 last night....
Car wanted for earlier shots fired calls....around 1500.
Same car description is seen high tailing it after 2 offenders unload over 5 shots into the victim. He gone...dead as dead can be. This is right at 2300-2330 time frame.
Less than an hour later, the same car is seen and the chase is on. They are driving like they ...like they just killed somebody and had to get away. Light traffic, midnights, and IT WAS the same car from both events.
Terminated....

To the poster that was "sick" at seeing the Supt. walking through the Park Manor neighborhood with kids yesterday...hey, the man spent the better part of the afternoon AND evening in that neighborhood, visiting the kid's school, listening to the concerns of parents and teachers there, visiting with the kid who got shot earlier this week, and also marching with the community. WHAT DID YOU DO?
Those folks had nothing but praise for what the police are doing over there. One can only hope other neighborhoods can be as supportive of us as those folks are. If you weren't there, don't hate on those who took the time out to show concern.

Our anger should be at the cops that put us in the position for more supervision. We should put the blame on the cops who do home invasions, steal money, and beat someone into oblivion without justifing their actions, or the coppers that who have no business with my arrest decide to beat the shit out of him and walk away, and they get pissed off when I put them down on the paper. Cameras in cars would increase my DUI convictions. Are you really doing something wrong that you are intimidated by being watched while you do your job? I embrace cameras in the cars. If coppers would stop focusing on the retro checks and actually focus on our contract, maybe we wouldn't get screwed all the time. Just for the record, I have 10 years on. WHAT IS THE NEXT SCANDAL?
I worked my ass off bringing in good heads and locking shi*heads up. I really enjoyed it. I looked forward to work and had lot's of fun. Bosses backed me up when someone needed to step up and I felt confident my best interest was being looked out for. I learned from other officers and was not afraid to ask questions when I did not know something. I took pride in my job and was very honored to be a Chicago Police Officer.
That was only 11 years ago and unfortunately that has all changed. Morale is horrible and bosses seem to look as far as their next promotion. Your on your own if you get jammed up. Just because someone is wearing blue doesn't mean your all on the same team. This department has never been more divided and that is the way the higher up's want it. Team LAPPA, HDO, Hellenic Association, Emerarld Society, Italian American Police Association, African American Police....Blah Blah Blah you get the picture. And meritorious promotions seem to be 100% (I really believe this). I look at some bosses and just laugh at their lack of knowledge and say to myself "I ,m going to talk to this guy if I have a problem or need something, yeah right". THIS JOB HAS OFFICIALLY GONE TO SHIT. Cameras at every intersection downtown monitored by OEC, the FBI and Homeland Security= A great tool to fuc* coppers. Cameras in cars and GPS. What great controls have been put on officers and what does the union say? Exactly, nothing. I would personally like to thank our Mayor, Phil Cline, Dana Starks, Charles Williams and all the CLOUT BABIES and politicians in our fine city for turning a lifelong dream of being a Chicago Policeman into a joke profession. We are armed secretaries a step up from "Andy Frain's". No disrespect to any usher's. So when I now go to my jobs and code them and give my bosses ZERO'S across the board for activity. I hope you understand.

In closing I have just over 10 years on this job. I haven't had a CR number in over 5 years. I do the job the best I can and I don't want big brother watching me with GPS and cameras. Those of us who actually work know that some old fashioned street justice works better than anything else.

Chicago Police Officers have no union. FOP Fraternal Order of Police is not a union in any way. Its a bargaining committe that does not know how to bargain.
I used to work for one of the news stations before I got on. Most of the tips that were called in about cops were cops. Most were obviously vendettas that we never followed up with, however when a story about home invasions, stolen drug money or drinking in the parking lots came in, that set the bells and whistles off the chart. We didn't even have to investigate, it was handed to us on a silver platter by cops. Times, dates, locations, what's going on, etc. All we had to do was show up with our undercover cameras and shoot. It amazed me how the cops who called in the news desk were so hell bent on busting other cops. Who honestly thinks the guy next to you is your friend and confidant. That's why I don't tell anyone about the property that I own or the exempts I know, because they are always jealous of what you have and pissed off at what they don't.

Both of you guys are great! And I mean it. This job ain't perfect...nobody ever said it was...I never expected it to be...I'm damn glad that I picked this profession and this department. I'm still having a ball...some days are better than others, but this is still the best damn job.
As for the comparisons between 1956 and 2007, you are so on. American society in 2007 is whacked.

The pursuit was transmitted over the zone, when no TRU supervisor responded te dispatcher asked for a 5th District Sgt. and 520 answered up and terminated the pursuit. He apparrently was unaware of the earlier shootings. Why he wasn't aware I don't know, don't forget we are talking about 005 here.

A typical DUI arrest takes between 1 and a half and two hours, conservatively and you are probably one of those asshole coppers that drink and drive and expect us to get you out of a jam when you run over someone and expect us to cover it up. After having a personal friend killed by a DUI, I started to REALLY pay attention, and don't regret that I ever wrote anyone for it. I do regret the opportunities I didn't. Anyway, keep up the fine work so hopefully I can stay safe as well as my family.

If my job was to handle off duty bs all day, I would happily do it. That is just what we do for each other. Sure drunk people can be hard to deal with and we all know that drunk copper are just as bad if not worse but for the most part they do the same stuff you do everyday so you should understand and cut them some slack.

Sometimes police need to blow off steam too and don't forget we are human and we sometimes we get fucked up and some cops handle their liquor worse than others. Do what you can to help but don't jam yourself up, you still got to do your job. When dealing with an unruly copper, take a deep breath and try to be more compassionate to the officer than you would with Joe Citizen, because the tables might be turned someday and you might be in that position. And as always, stay safe....

Here's an interesting observation. Old timers tell us this job is nothing like the good old days. Well, the kind of job you were doing during the good old days is why we have all these rules now.

Hey, that Abbate was lucky that didn't happen in 018 or else those "clout heavy" po's would've screwed him. Gimme a break.
I've worked in 018 and on rush/division st. 8+ yrs & have never cost an offduty any time or even a reprimand. Yet i've answered plenty of cr's because i did take care of offduty po's.
I've taken care of coppers from here and all over the world. more than any of you can say. I've saved careers.
Now some offduty's feelings are hurt because he put us in a situation & the most is that he got yelled @ & embarrassed by us or a sgt. he probably asked for.
We'll take care of offduty po's & their girlfriends & their friends. Always will. We'll get you parking, get you passed any velvet rope, get you a table @ any restaurant without asking for anything in return. Come down & have a good time.
However, when you or your buddies have a momementary lapse of common sense, we'll honestly do everything we can and have. But some of you think you can declare your office & civilians give a crap. In reality, the only 2 people in awe of your badge are you and the girl you got because of it.
If your upset because you don't have the seniority or the brains to bid out of that ghetto district you're in, don't blame us.
Don't like us, go drink @ the albany inn or @ brewbaker's or @ the 50 yard line or @ kelly's (u know which one).
Anyone feel like they have certain inequities to rectify? We get off work @ 5am sunday morning when the bars close. We'll gladly meet you in the parking lot of 018, and take care of it (& probably rather quickly).
