Merit Pay?

This is humorous. First, the schools are burning through $50 million Federal dollars for all sorts of specialized tutoring that is showing just about zero in terms of results.

Now, they're up for another $28 million in "merit" pay from the bottomless Federal money pit:
  • Some Chicago teachers are receiving merit pay for the first time. In all, 10 schools will participate, and even the teachers union and the mayor are supporting the plan.
  • Teachers at Lawndale Community Academy on the city's West Side welcome the idea of a bonus in their paycheck, which, along with nine other schools, will be the first to participate in the merit pay concept, the money coming from a $28 million federal grant.
  • First, a school's entire staff has to agree to the merit pay concept. Test score improvement is a must, but everyone on the staff - from the lunch workers to teachers - will mutually benefit.
We've also heard that this is being piloted at a bunch of schools where they can't keep teachers on staff. Tying it to test score improvement would be a good thing if the state didn't keep moving the goalposts all the time to make passing easier and continually pumping more and more tax money into a system that is beyond broken.

Put their entire salary schedule on merit pay. Most will end up working pro bono.

So do you think this will just be a bonus plan or will part of their pay be tied to performance? Who wouldn't accept a bonus for doing well if there was no downside if you did poorly?

How about we have them put so skin in the game? Reduce pay by 25% and use that for the bonus pool. You can get that 25% back by just meeting the set goal and get even more if you exceed. Of course, if you don't meet the goals, well, that money can be used for the people who exceed.

Just a crazy idea from someone who has to work in the real world.

LoL... I find this hysterical. Does this mean Duncan and the principals are going to be 'reclassifing' test scores like 35th St. does with Agg. Batt. and homicide numbers?

Merit Pay will never work with the Chicago Police Department.

Unless, the Daytime Dollies and the House Mice would get merit pay.

Did you ever wonder why we have Duty Availability Checks and not a real shift differential?

If the city tied westside teacher's pay to their student's performance they would be broke. Their cars would be repo'ed and their home foreclosed.

THE SYSTEM ISN'T BROKE! garbage in-garbage out. the majority of students show up to school unprepared and unwilling to do what is nessesary to learn. this is the fault of their parent first and foremost.
a few suggestions....
1)have children only in wedlock and after reaching the age of majority.
2) have children only if you are able to support them on your own.
3)once you have children spend time with them.....teaching them things that will prepare them for school.
4)set a good example for your children by displaying discipline and obeying the law.
i know all this sounds crazy and realize that this is 2007 afterall but W.T.F. !!!!!!!!

Read the chapter in "Freakonomics" dealing with the Chicago Public Schools. All that is going to happen is the Admin will alter the test scores and/or teachers will give out the answers to the test...just like we do for the State Certification Test in the academy.

I am a CPS teacher. Believe me, we earn every penny, just as all of you do. The vast majority of us, like you, could go work in corporate America making a lot more money for a lot less aggravation. I personally don't agree with merit pay. Most of us don't agree with tying everything to standardized test scores either. I agree with the "bottomless pit of federal spending". Kids come to school with $200 shoes and IPODS but can't afford to pay for school supplies or lunch. We know the tutoring programs don't work...it's the same kids we have all day long!!!!It has to start at home. Whoever posted about students coming to school unprepared...it is true in every sense...they are unprepared physicall, emotionally, and socially to learn. We're lucky if they come in knowing their ABC's. WE'RE ALL ON THE SAME TEAM HERE!

Teachers, you get no argument from us(police) we are on your side.If I had my way, corporal punishment would be brought back to school,it worked on me and that was only the late 1970's.I don't know how you guys do your job, at least we can lock them up.
